Bird Flu Was Detected in an Oklahoma Dairy Herd in 2024: What It Means Now

Oklahoma’s dairy-herd bird flu detection dates to a sample collected in April 2024, with confirmation announced July 12, 2024. Here is what that means for milk safety, human monitoring and farmers.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI, commonly called bird flu) was confirmed in an Oklahoma dairy herd after a sample collected in April 2024. The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (ODAFF) announced the confirmation on July 12, 2024. This is a historical detection, not a newly reported 2026 event.

What happened in Oklahoma?

ODAFF reported that USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed HPAI in a dairy herd. The state alert described affected cattle with reduced milk production, thicker and more concentrated milk, reduced appetite and lethargy. Those observations came from the reported herd; they are not symptoms that every infected cow must show.

The available state record does not provide the herd’s full testing chronology, the exact confirmatory assay or all case-investigation findings. It does establish the sample and announcement dates shown below.

Timeline

Date Event
April 2024 ODAFF says the positive dairy-herd sample was collected.
July 12, 2024 ODAFF recorded and announced USDA APHIS confirmation.
December 6, 2024 USDA says its National Milk Testing Strategy began.
January 8, 2026 ODAFF lists a confirmed HPAI case in a backyard flock in Wagoner County. The state situation timeline does not list a later Oklahoma dairy-herd detection.

Is Oklahoma milk safe to drink?

ODAFF says the regulated commercial milk supply remains safe because of federal animal-health requirements and pasteurization. That statement applies to commercial, pasteurized milk and dairy products. It should not be broadened into a safety claim for raw, unpasteurized milk.

Consumers should follow ordinary food-safety guidance and choose pasteurized dairy products. The Oklahoma alert does not establish that raw milk is safe from HPAI.

Can people get bird flu from dairy cattle?

People who work closely with infected animals can require public-health monitoring, which is why animal-health and public-health agencies coordinate investigations and worker-exposure prevention. A CDC monitoring snapshot listed 0 reported human H5 infections in Oklahoma and 14 people monitored, with data through August 29, 2026; the page was marked current as of September 2, 2026.

Those figures are a dated state snapshot, not a real-time guarantee and not a risk estimate for a particular person or exposure. “Monitored” does not mean “infected.” Anyone with a possible occupational exposure should follow instructions from public-health officials and seek medical advice about symptoms or testing.

How is the Oklahoma herd event monitored?

The Oklahoma confirmation is a herd-level animal-health event. It should not be confused with USDA’s broader state-status categories or surveillance results. USDA’s National Milk Testing Strategy uses a five-stage roadmap that combines:

  • Testing milk from processing-plant silos;
  • State-specific surveillance;
  • Investigation of suspected cases; and
  • Testing associated with interstate movement.

USDA defines a state as “Affected” when continuing testing and surveillance demonstrate H5 in dairy cattle, and “Unaffected” when ongoing surveillance demonstrates absence. Those program labels do not replace a herd-specific investigation.

Movement and herd-testing requirements

Under USDA’s April 2024 Federal Order, lactating dairy cows must be tested before interstate shipment, and positive results must be reported. USDA says those requirements remain in effect. Its voluntary Dairy Herd Status Program can use weekly bulk-milk samples for monitoring before interstate movement instead of testing every individual animal.

What should Oklahoma dairy farmers do?

ODAFF advises dairy farmers to strengthen biosecurity, remain in regular contact with their herd veterinarian and report possible HPAI cases to the department.

  1. Contact the herd veterinarian promptly. Discuss unusual drops in milk production, abnormal milk, appetite changes or lethargy.
  2. Increase biosecurity. Limit unnecessary animal and personnel movement, review cleaning and disinfection practices, and follow veterinary guidance for handling potentially affected cattle.
  3. Report suspected cases to ODAFF. The state alert lists 405-522-6141; verify the current number on ODAFF’s disease-alert page before calling, because contact details can change.
  4. Use official testing channels. Ask the veterinarian or state officials which APHIS, state or herd-status testing pathway applies to the situation.

What this 2024 detection does—and does not—show

  • It confirms that HPAI was identified in an Oklahoma dairy herd from a sample collected in April 2024.
  • It does not mean Oklahoma reported a new dairy-herd detection in 2026.
  • It does not make commercial pasteurized milk unsafe; ODAFF specifically says the regulated supply remains safe.
  • It does not establish that raw milk is safe.
  • It does not turn a dated CDC monitoring table into a current risk assessment for every person or farm.
