A plesiosaur fossil known as MH7 is extraordinary because it preserves soft tissue, not just bones. Researchers found smooth skin around the tail and scales along the rear edges of the flippers—an anatomical contrast that is almost never available in plesiosaur fossils.
The specimen is about 183 million years old, nearly 15 feet long, and was discovered near Holzmaden, Germany, in 1940. Its preserved tissues offer a rare look at a plesiosaur’s outer body, while proposed explanations for how those textures worked remain hypotheses rather than proven behavior.
What makes MH7 so unusual?
Bones show a plesaur’s skeleton, but they usually cannot show whether its body was smooth, scaled, wrinkled or otherwise textured. Soft tissue decays quickly and is rarely preserved in the fossil record. MH7 is exceptional because microscopic tissue remnants survived long enough to reveal parts of the animal’s external covering.
Lead author Miguel Marx, a doctoral student in geology at Lund University, described seeing preserved skin cells as “almost like looking at modern skin.” The work combined a broad range of techniques with microscopic examination of small samples from the tail and a flipper.

#1 Best Overall
- Authentic Plesiosaur tooth fossil from the Cretaceous period, over 100 million years old
- Genuine specimen with certificate of authenticity included in presentation
- Presented in premium collector's display box designed for shelf or desk display
- Dimensions: 8.25 inches length x 6.25 inches width x 0.75 inches height; weighs 0.60 lb
- Direct physical evidence of ancient marine predators that inhabited Earth's oceans during the age of dinosaurs
What the researchers observed
| Body region | Preserved texture | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Tail region | Smooth skin | Skin structures in the sampled tail area were identified as smooth. |
| Rear edge of the flippers | Scales | Scales were identified along the back edge of the sampled flippers. |
The important result is the regional contrast: MH7 did not have one uniformly documented surface texture across every examined area. Smooth tail skin and scaly flipper margins give paleontologists information that the skeleton alone cannot provide.
How an old museum specimen became a new discovery
- Discovery in 1940: MH7 was found in a quarry near Holzmaden, Germany.
- Wartime protection: During World War II, the fossil was briefly buried in a garden to protect it.
- Long storage: It then entered the collection of Urwelt-Museum Hauff, where it remained for roughly 75 years.
- Assembly in 2020: The specimen was assembled before researchers sampled its preserved tissues for detailed study.
Its long period in storage does not make it a recent fossil find. It is a 183-million-year-old animal whose scientific value became clearer when modern analytical methods were applied to material already held in a museum.

- Museum quality fossil cast replica from an acrocanthosaurus hand claw
- Claw is roughly 4.5 inches long
- Original was found at the Antlers Formation around the Oklahoma/Texas border
Could the textures explain how plesiosaurs moved?
Smooth tail skin
Lund University researchers suggest that smooth skin may have reduced resistance and supported efficient movement through water. That is a functional interpretation consistent with the location of the tissue, not a direct observation of MH7 swimming.
Scaly flipper edges
The team also suggests that scales along the rear edges of the flippers may have helped the animal deal with rough seabed surfaces. Again, the scales are directly observed; moving across a seabed is an inferred possibility.

Why the distinction matters
A physical feature can have more than one function, and behavior does not fossilize alongside it. Smithsonian Magazine notes that behavior is difficult to infer from anatomy alone. The evidence therefore supports statements about texture and location more strongly than statements about exactly how MH7 used its flippers or tail.
What this tells us about plesaur reconstructions
Artists and museum designers often have to reconstruct a plesiosaur’s appearance from bones, comparisons with living animals and biomechanical reasoning. MH7 adds direct evidence for portions of the skin surface, making reconstructions less dependent on guesswork in those regions.

- Educational and Collectible – A great hands-on way to explore prehistoric life and paleontology
- Genuine Fossils Included – Both the Mosasaur tooth and ammonite are real fossil specimens
- Realistic Replica Claw – Velociraptor claw cast features high quality texture and curvature
- Ready for Display or Teaching – Great for collectors, educators, or science-themed gifts
- It supports depicting smooth skin in the preserved tail area.
- It supports depicting scales along the rear edges of the flippers.
- It does not establish the texture of every other body region.
- It does not settle the animal’s exact swimming style, seabed behavior or full-body appearance.
That combination—specific new evidence alongside substantial remaining uncertainty—is typical of exceptional fossil discoveries. A small preserved patch can improve a life reconstruction without supplying a complete “photograph” of the animal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What remains unknown
MH7 cannot answer every question about plesiosaurs. The documented samples cover the tail region and portions of the flippers, not the entire body. The fossil also does not preserve a movie of the animal’s movements, so proposed links between skin texture and swimming or seabed contact should remain qualified.

Researchers may learn more by comparing MH7 with other exceptionally preserved reptiles, but this specimen alone should not be treated as proof that all plesiosaurs had identical skin patterns or used their limbs in the same way.
Why a 1940 fossil still changes the picture
MH7 demonstrates why museum collections can remain scientifically important for decades. New preparation, imaging and microscopic methods can reveal information that was inaccessible when a fossil was first collected. In this case, the result is not a new species announcement but a new anatomical view of a known specimen.
The strongest conclusion is straightforward: a plesiosaur from about 183 million years ago preserves regional skin textures—smooth tail skin and scaly flipper edges—that are extraordinarily rare in the fossil record. Those observations can sharpen reconstructions of its appearance, while explanations of how the textures affected movement remain informed but unproven interpretations.
