About the American Shetland Pony

The American Shetland Pony is a pony breed from the United States, descended from the traditional Shetland Pony of Scotland’s Shetland Isles. Cross-breeding with other horse and pony breeds shaped a taller, more elegant pony than its Shetland predecessor. Its build is closer to the Hackney Pony, with some Arab influence, and it lacks the traditional Shetland’s thick coat. It is one of two American pony breeds derived from the traditional Shetland; the other is the Pony of the Americas. The breed is noted as the most numerous pony breed in the United States, with an estimate of more than 50,000 in 1994.
