On September 5, 2024, Mitchell Rudy walked 38 Korean K9 Rescue dogs simultaneously in Goesan, South Korea, setting Guinness World Records’ category record for the most dogs walked simultaneously by an individual. BONK and Korean K9 Rescue organized and supported the effort to draw attention to rescued dogs and encourage adoption.

What happened in the record-setting walk?

Rudy, a Canadian involved with BONK, handled 38 dogs at the same time during an event in Goesan. A reported account places the walk at Jungwon University. Guinness World Records later included the feat in its official 2024 year-end roundup, confirming the category and the 38-dog result.

The record belongs to Rudy as the person who performed the walk. BONK and Korean K9 Rescue were the supporting organizations behind the event and its adoption-awareness purpose.

Who were the dogs?

All of the dogs came from Korean K9 Rescue. The rescue says its dogs were rescued in South Korea from mistreatment, neglect and abuse. The organization’s event page directs readers to individual dog profiles and adoption applications, although it does not establish how many of the dogs from the walk are currently available.

Why organizers called it a life-saving message

The walk was designed to make rescued dogs visible to a large audience and encourage people to consider adoption. Guinness described the BONK and Korean K9 Rescue effort in those terms. That purpose supports the “save lives” framing: adoption can give an individual rescue dog a permanent home. The available reports do not provide a verified number of adoptions caused by the event, so the 38-dog figure should not be treated as an adoption-impact statistic.

How the attempt was prepared

Training the dogs to move together

Before the attempt, Rudy and BONK colleagues traveled to South Korea to spend time with the dogs. Trainers worked with them so they could become comfortable walking together. The preparation was important because the dogs had to move as a coordinated group rather than as unrelated individual walks.

Leashes and handler coordination

The reported arrangement used separate leashes, with dogs grouped during preparation. Rudy held 20 leashes in each hand. A Guinness representative monitored and recorded the attempt.

Why the final count was 38

The organizers initially planned to walk 40 dogs. Two were left out on the day because temperatures were high and they were having issues. Rudy explained: “We ended up with 38 dogs because it was a hot day, and two of them were having a few issues.”

Physical difficulty

Rudy compared the effort to a very heavy workout: “Between them all, ‘it was like getting on the rowing machine and doing a 900-pound pull,’ he said.” The description illustrates the strain involved; it is not a recommendation to attempt a similar walk.

What made this a Guinness record?

The official category is most dogs walked simultaneously by an individual. The reported account says the previous mark was 36 dogs, making the 38-dog walk a two-dog improvement. Rudy received official confirmation from Guinness in mid-October 2024, according to that account.

Because this was a 2024 event, the sources confirm the result at that time but do not establish whether another attempt has since surpassed it. It is therefore more precise to call it the 2024 Guinness record rather than claim it is still the current world record without a new status check.

The rescue perspective

Gina Kim-Sadiku, executive director of Korean K9 Rescue, praised Rudy’s handling of the dogs: “He demonstrated an extraordinary connection with our dogs, guiding them through clear communication and a deep empathy for their unique spirits and personalities,” she said.

That observation also explains why the event required preparation beyond simply attaching many leads. The dogs’ comfort, behavior and ability to move safely together determined who could participate on the day.

What ordinary dog walkers should—and should not—take from it

  • Do not imitate the stunt. Walking dozens of dogs requires trained handlers, individual leashes, controlled conditions and an assessment of each dog’s behavior and health.
  • Heat matters. Two dogs were excluded because of the hot conditions and problems they were experiencing.
  • Use equipment for the actual number of dogs you can safely manage. The event used separate leashes; a standard dog leash is not a way to control 38 dogs.
  • Prioritize the dogs’ welfare. Training, spacing, supervision and a plan to stop are essential even for a normal group walk.

How to support the dogs now

Korean K9 Rescue’s event page provides access to participating dogs’ profiles and adoption applications. Availability can change, so prospective adopters should check the rescue’s current listings directly rather than assume that every dog shown in the 2024 event remains available.

For people who cannot adopt, sharing accurate profiles, supporting reputable rescue work and helping an adopted dog settle into a safe home are practical ways to extend the event’s central message.
