No—not in a conventional freshwater fish tank. Common pet land hermit crabs need a terrestrial, warm, humid habitat with burrowing substrate and access to both dechlorinated freshwater and marine saltwater. You can reuse an empty glass fish tank as an enclosure after converting it into a land-based terrarium, but it should not remain a fish tank shared with fish.
Why a freshwater aquarium is unsuitable
A typical pet hermit crab is a terrestrial land crab, not a freshwater aquarium animal. A tank filled with water offers no dry area or deep, moist substrate for burrowing and molting. It also cannot provide the crab with the separate freshwater and marine-saltwater pools it needs.
Humidity matters, too. Zoo Med Laboratories’ care guidance calls for 70–90% relative humidity and notes that hermit crabs have gills similar to fish. That humidity requirement does not make a water-filled aquarium suitable: the crab still needs a land habitat, and the enclosure must maintain the right humid conditions.
Can a land hermit crab live with freshwater fish?
Do not put a land hermit crab in a conventional freshwater community aquarium. A crab’s ability to climb or briefly enter water does not make the aquarium a suitable long-term habitat; it does not reliably supply terrestrial space, burrowing substrate, controlled humidity, and a separate marine-saltwater pool.

Freshwater fish also have species-specific water needs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says most fish live in either saltwater or freshwater, not both, so adding marine salt to a shared freshwater aquarium is not a way to meet the crab’s needs. The available care guidance does not establish a safe fish-and-land-hermit-crab stocking combination.
What water does a hermit crab need?
PetMD says pet hermit crabs need constant access to shallow bowls of both saltwater and freshwater. The freshwater should be dechlorinated. Make the saltwater with marine aquarium salt—not freshwater aquarium salt—and verify its salinity with a suitable instrument. PetMD gives a saltwater specific gravity of 1.021–1.026.

- Attention: please do not let it dry excessively or its will easily become brittle and fall off. You need to keep an eye on its drying condition and spray it with water properly to ensure that it stays in good "working condition".
Both pools need to be accessible, with a safe way for the crab to get in and out. Do not use ordinary table salt or assume that one water type can replace the other.
Can you turn an old fish tank into a crabitat?
Yes. An empty glass aquarium can be repurposed as a terrestrial enclosure if you set it up for the crab rather than keeping it as a filled fish tank.

- Use a secure lid and maintain warm temperatures and high humidity. A hygrometer helps monitor humidity.
- Add deep, moist, sand-based substrate that can hold a burrow, giving the crab room to dig and molt.
- Provide two non-metal water dishes: one for dechlorinated freshwater and one for marine-saltwater mixed with marine aquarium salt. Check the saltwater with a suitable salinity instrument.
- Make both pools safe to use by providing an easy way to enter and exit.
- Include land-habitat essentials: hides, climbing structure, food, and spare shells.
Keep the pools separate from one another and from the substrate as much as the setup allows. Follow a care guide for the particular species you keep; the figures here describe common pet land hermit crabs, not unusual aquatic species.

This guidance is for commonly sold terrestrial land hermit crabs. If you have an unusual aquatic species, identify it before choosing a habitat and get species-specific advice; the requirements for land hermit crabs should not be assumed to fit it.
