That is a practical target that gives the fish swimming room and makes temperature and water quality easier to keep stable. Published guidance differs on the absolute minimum: PetMD lists 2.5 gallons, RSPCA Australia lists 10 litres, and both RSPCA Australia and a University of Illinois veterinarian identify about 20 litres or 5 gallons as an ideal size.
How much water does one betta need?
Aim for at least 5 US gallons (about 20 litres) for a single betta, with a larger aquarium beneficial when you have the space and equipment. Treat 5 gallons as a practical welfare target, not as a universally defined legal or scientific minimum.
The recommendations below describe different points on the scale—absolute minimum versus ideal setup—so they should not be collapsed into one identical threshold.
| Source | Volume stated | How the source describes it |
|---|---|---|
| PetMD Betta Fish Care Sheet (updated April 27, 2026) | At least 2.5 gallons; 5–10 gallons ideal | Minimum and preferred range in a veterinary-authored care sheet |
| RSPCA Australia (updated May 1, 2024) | 10 litres absolute minimum; 20 litres or more ideal | Minimum and ideal volumes for Siamese fighting fish |
| University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine | 5-gallon glass or plastic aquarium or larger | Ideal recommendation from veterinarian Krista Keller, a board-certified zoological-medicine specialist |
Why a larger aquarium is usually safer
More stable temperature and water chemistry
A larger volume changes temperature and pollutant concentration more slowly than a tiny container. That gives you more time to detect and correct problems and makes routine maintenance less sensitive to small dosing or evaporation errors. RSPCA aquarium guidance warns that small volumes can undergo rapid temperature changes and may not leave enough room for an efficient filter.

- Compact: Dimension: 7.9"x5.9"x5.9"; 1 Gallon tank; ideal for small spaces, aquarium beginners caring for a single betta, a few shrimp, snails, or a tiny goldfish. Also works as a temporary hospital tank, quarantine tank, or desktop decor (After deducting the filter part, the actual usable volume is approximately 0.8 gal and it will further decrease after adding substrate)
- Customizable Lighting: features a 3-color LED hood with 10 adjustable brightness levels to showcase your fish and tank décor
- Self-Cleaning Filtration: Hidden filter keeps tank clean for easier maintenance. Note: Clean filter sponge and pump regularly to avoid clogging; regular water changes are required — this small tank does not support zero-maintenance use
- Thoughtful Design: its top feeding hole allows for easy feeding without removing the lid; four silicone feet for stability and quiet operation
- Complete Starter Kit: 1x 1 gallon Fish Tank, 1x Filter Sponge, 1x Adjustable Water Pump, 1x LED Hood (Note: The light requires a power transformer (not included) for use. Compatible transformers include 5V 0.5A, 5V 1A, 5V 1.5A, and 5V 2A)
Space for swimming and normal activity
Betta splendens are active fish that use horizontal swimming space, not just the water directly around a decoration. A wider aquarium also provides more surface area for oxygen exchange. RSPCA guidance summarizes the principle as: “Bigger is better when it comes to aquariums, so go for more space than the minimum required.”
Room for functioning equipment
A suitable filter, heater and thermometer occupy part of the aquarium. Decorative bowls and very small tanks can leave no practical room for equipment or can create excessive current. A 5-gallon or larger tank lets you install equipment while retaining usable swimming space.

What the behavior evidence does—and does not—show
An RSPCA Australia April 2024 science update describes observations of individual male Siamese fighting fish in aquaria of 0.5, 10, 38 and 208 litres after approximately 24 hours of habituation. The summary reports fewer approaches and fewer aggressive or retreating displays in the larger aquaria, while biting attacks did not differ significantly by tank size.
Those findings support providing meaningful space, but the summary does not establish a single exact gallon cutoff. It also does not provide enough methodological detail to treat one of the tested volumes as a universal minimum for every betta.

Equipment and layout for a 5-gallon betta aquarium
Use filtration without blasting the fish
Choose a filter rated for the aquarium and set it to a gentle or adjustable flow. Bettas can struggle in strong currents; use a baffle or sponge pre-filter if the outlet pushes the fish around.
Control and verify temperature
Use an appropriately sized aquarium heater and a separate thermometer. PetMD’s care guidance includes both heating and temperature monitoring; do not rely on the room feeling warm enough.

Cycle and test the water
Cycle the aquarium before adding the fish, then use a freshwater aquarium test kit to monitor the parameters your maintenance routine depends on. Follow the test kit’s instructions and perform partial water changes when results indicate they are needed.
Cover the aquarium and leave swimming room
Use a secure lid because bettas can jump. Arrange plants and shelters so the fish can rest and explore, while keeping an open area for swimming and ensuring decorations have no sharp edges.

Is a 2.5-gallon or 10-litre tank acceptable?
These sizes appear in published guidance as minimums, but they provide less margin for temperature and water-quality swings than a 5-gallon aquarium. If you use one, equipment must still be appropriate, flow must remain gentle, and testing and maintenance need to be consistent. Moving to 5 gallons or more is the simpler choice for most keepers because it offers greater stability and usable space.
What size is better than 5 gallons?
A larger tank is worthwhile when you can support it with a correctly sized heater and filter and maintain it reliably. More volume is not a substitute for maintenance: an uncycled or poorly heated 10-gallon aquarium is not automatically safer than a well-run 5-gallon aquarium. Choose the largest practical setup that you can equip, cycle and clean consistently.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes with betta tank size
- Using a bowl as the permanent home: bowls often lack space for efficient filtration, heating and oxygen exchange.
- Counting only advertised volume: gravel, décor and equipment reduce the actual water volume, so leave capacity for them.
- Ignoring current: a filter that is too forceful can exhaust a betta even in a tank of adequate volume.
- Skipping a thermometer and tests: clear water can still have an unsuitable temperature or harmful chemistry.
- Adding tank mates without extra planning: volume guidance here is for one betta; additional animals require their own compatibility, space and filtration assessment.
Practical decision rule
- Buy a lidded aquarium with 5 gallons or more of capacity for one betta.
- Install a gentle-flow filter, an appropriately sized heater and a thermometer.
- Cycle the aquarium and verify water conditions with a freshwater test kit before introduction.
- Provide plants or shelters plus an unobstructed swimming area.
- Maintain stable temperature and water quality through regular testing and partial water changes.
