Their retinas contain many rods that collect dim light, and a reflective layer behind the retina gives available light another chance to be detected. That layer also causes the familiar eyeshine when light reaches a cat’s eyes.
How much better can cats see in dim light?
The Merck Veterinary Manual says cats can see six times better than people in dim light. That comparison is Merck’s published claim; the entry does not specify the underlying study or testing conditions, so it should not be treated as a newly verified laboratory result. It describes an advantage in low light, not superior vision in every setting.
Why cats see better when light is scarce
Rods help detect dim light
The retina contains photoreceptors called rods and cones. Merck explains that rods are good at collecting dim light, while cones are involved in color vision. Cats have many rod cells, which helps explain their low-light advantage. Merck says feline color vision is uncertain, so the available evidence here does not establish that cats see only in black and white or define a precise range of colors.
The tapetum lucidum gives light another pass
The tapetum lucidum is a reflective layer behind the retina, within the choroid. Light that passes through the retina without being absorbed can be reflected back through it, giving photoreceptors another opportunity to detect it. A PubMed-indexed 1981 morphology paper describes the cat tapetum as lamellar and identifies this return of light toward receptor cells as its proposed function.

Why do cats’ eyes shine in the dark?
Eyeshine is reflected light, not light produced by a cat. When incoming light reaches the tapetum lucidum, some of it reflects back out of the eye and may appear to glow. Eyeshine therefore depends on light reaching the eye; it does not mean a cat can see without any light.
What cats’ night vision does—and does not—mean
The rods and tapetum help cats make better use of dim light than people can. They do not enable vision in the complete absence of light. Nor does this low-light edge mean cats have better vision in every respect: Merck’s comparison is specifically about dim conditions, and its account describes feline color vision as uncertain.

When to ask a veterinarian about a cat’s vision
If you are concerned that your cat may not be seeing normally, contact a veterinarian rather than trying to diagnose the problem from behavior or eyeshine alone. Cornell’s Feline Health Center notes that earlier diagnosis can make treatment more effective and that retinal detachment can lead to permanent blindness.
