If your dog may have eaten one, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service immediately—do not wait for symptoms.
Which mushrooms are safe for dogs?
ASPCA Poison Control considers grocery-store mushrooms intended for human consumption generally safe for pets when served plain. That guidance is about the mushroom itself; it does not make every mushroom-containing food safe.
| Exposure | What to know |
|---|---|
| Plain grocery-store culinary mushroom | Generally considered safe for pets by ASPCA Poison Control. |
| Wild or unidentified mushroom | May be toxic, and appearance alone is not a reliable way for an owner to establish safety. Contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service if ingestion is possible. |
| Psychoactive mushroom or mushroom edible | Not covered by the guidance on ordinary grocery-store food mushrooms; do not assume it is safe. |
| Mushroom dish with other ingredients | The safety of the mushroom does not establish the safety of the complete dish or its other ingredients. |
Why wild mushroom ingestion needs urgent advice
Wild mushrooms can be difficult to identify accurately. ASPCA Poison Control and Pet Poison Helpline recommend relying on trained professionals rather than trying to decide whether a mushroom is safe from its appearance, a photograph, or an identification app.
Depending on the mushroom, poisoning may affect the gastrointestinal tract, nervous system, liver, or kidneys. Pet Poison Helpline reports that signs from some toxins may begin within 15–30 minutes, while others may take up to 24 hours. These are possible onset windows, not a safe period to wait: a dog that seems well right after eating a mushroom may still be at risk.

Signs of mushroom poisoning in dogs
Possible signs vary by mushroom and dog; a dog will not necessarily develop all of them. Pet Poison Helpline lists:
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Unsteady movement, tremors, or seizures
- Changes in vision, aggression, or disorientation
- Possible liver or kidney effects
Apparent improvement does not always mean the danger has passed. Cornell’s veterinary reference notes that a dog may relapse after seeming to recover, with relapse associated with liver degeneration or kidney failure.

What to do if your dog eats a wild or unknown mushroom
- Call now. Contact your veterinarian, an emergency veterinary clinic, or an animal poison-control service. ASPCA and Pet Poison Helpline both advise immediate professional contact after a possible wild mushroom exposure.
- Share what you know. Tell the professional when the exposure may have happened, where the mushroom was found, how much may have been eaten, and whether your dog has any signs.
- Save a photo or sample only if safe. It may help professionals, but do not handle a mushroom unnecessarily or delay the call while trying to identify it.
- Follow veterinary instructions. Do not induce vomiting or give activated charcoal or other treatment unless a veterinarian specifically tells you to.
How to reduce the risk outdoors
Mushrooms are often most prevalent from spring through fall in warm, wet, rainy conditions, according to ASPCA; in warmer climates or places with mild winters, they may appear year-round. They can grow quickly in lawns, wooded areas, and other outdoor spaces.
