Why Do Cats Pant? Causes and When to Get Emergency Help

Cat panting can follow exertion, stress, or heat, but it may also signal respiratory distress. Learn when to seek emergency veterinary care and how to transport your cat safely.

Cats may pant after intense activity, stress, or heat, but open-mouth breathing is not considered normal in cats. It can signal a serious breathing problem, so contact a veterinarian immediately if your cat is panting, breathing with effort, or panting without a clear brief trigger. Do not wait to see whether it passes.

What panting means in a cat

Panting is breathing with the mouth open. It is a symptom, not a diagnosis: the same outward sign can result from different problems, and a cat’s breathing cannot be assessed reliably at home by appearance alone.

Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine describes dyspnea as significant difficulty breathing in or out. A cat in respiratory distress may breathe rapidly, pant noisily, cough, or stretch its body and neck to breathe. AAHA advises treating a panting cat as a medical emergency; VCA also recommends immediate veterinary care for open-mouth breathing or difficulty breathing.

Why cats might pant

Intense activity, stress, and heat can be associated with panting. But a possible trigger does not establish that the cat is safe, and the veterinary guidance above does not set a duration that owners can safely wait before seeking care.

Airway or lung problems

Asthma, an airway obstruction, a foreign body, lung tumors, other pulmonary disorders, chest injury, and viral disease are among the possibilities Cornell identifies. Wheezing or coughing may accompany breathing trouble, but these signs do not identify the cause.

Heart problems or fluid around the lungs

Heart failure can lead to fluid building up in or around the lungs and interfere with breathing. Pleural effusion—fluid in the space around the lungs—can keep the chest from expanding normally. These conditions can look similar from the outside but require different veterinary assessment and treatment.

Heatstroke

VCA lists excessive panting, lethargy, and distress among signs of heatstroke and warns that unconsciousness and death can follow. Suspected heatstroke needs veterinary care, not watchful waiting.

When panting is an emergency

Seek veterinary care immediately for open-mouth panting or difficulty breathing. It is especially urgent if you notice any of these signs:

  • Labored, rapid, or noisy breathing, or the abdomen working hard with each breath.
  • Inability to settle or lie flat, or stretching the neck and body to breathe.
  • Pale or blue gums or tongue, collapse, coughing, or wheezing.

Cornell emergency and critical-care specialist Daniel Fletcher, DVM, advises taking an animal to a veterinarian whenever there is a question about its ability to breathe comfortably. Do not wait for a particular breathing rate or for additional symptoms if your cat is panting or struggling to breathe.

What to do while arranging veterinary care

  1. Call a veterinarian or emergency clinic now. Say plainly that you are worried about how your cat is breathing, and describe when the faster or harder breathing began. AAHA recommends sharing when the change started.
  2. Keep your cat quiet and still. VCA advises minimizing movement during an emergency. Avoid handling that causes extra stress, and do not constrict the airway.
  3. Transport your cat in a suitable carrier or container. Follow the clinic’s instructions while arranging prompt transport.
  4. If heatstroke is suspected, use cool—not cold—water while transporting for veterinary care. Do not delay the trip to try a home remedy.

What the veterinarian may check

Because breathing difficulty is a clinical sign rather than a final diagnosis, a veterinarian must determine what is causing it. Cornell notes that care depends on the cause: asthma may be treated with airway-dilating medication, while pleural effusion may require fluid drainage. In a respiratory crisis, the team may stabilize the cat before completing diagnostic work such as X-rays or blood tests. Panting alone cannot tell an owner which condition is present.

How to interpret a breathing-rate count

AAHA gives a general reference of 15–30 breaths per minute at rest and says a sustained rate above 40–60 per minute is concerning. This is not a panting-specific diagnostic threshold, and it does not replace urgent care for open-mouth breathing or visible effort. Do not delay contacting a veterinarian to count breaths when your cat is in distress.
