Yes—if the piranha is small enough. “Vampire fish” normally means a payara (Hydrolycus species), a South American freshwater predator that catches and swallows other fish. A suitably large payara can eat a suitably small piranha, but that does not mean every payara routinely hunts every piranha species.
What is a “vampire fish”?
The name usually refers to payara, not the unrelated marine vampire squid. NOAA Ocean Service uses “freshwater vampire fish” for payara, whose conspicuous lower-jaw fangs help them seize prey. The aquarium species most often discussed, Hydrolycus scomberoides, is described as an obligate piscivore: fish make up its diet.
Why a payara can eat a piranha
Payara are open-water pursuit predators. They accelerate after fish, impale or hold them with their enlarged lower teeth, and swallow the catch. Aquarist Atlas reports that a payara can take prey up to roughly half its own body length. Fish Laboratory specifically lists piranhas among prey reported for payara. Together, those observations support a conditional answer: a larger payara can consume a smaller piranha when it can seize and swallow it.
Size determines the encounter
A piranha is not automatically too dangerous to be prey. A juvenile or otherwise small piranha may fit within a payara’s feeding range. A large piranha, however, could bite or injure a payara, and a small payara could be vulnerable to a larger piranha. The outcome depends on the species and size of both fish, the available escape space, and whether an actual feeding opportunity occurs.

Piranhas are predators, but their diets vary
Red-bellied piranhas at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo are reported to eat fin material, pieces of flesh, whole small fish, insects, aquatic invertebrates, and occasional plant matter. A ScienceDirect overview notes that piranha diets change with species, season, and food availability. Pygocentrus species are closest to exclusive fish-eaters, while other genera may consume insects, crustaceans, fins, or scales. Calling all piranhas equally aggressive or equally piscivorous oversimplifies the biology.
Will a payara eat a piranha in an aquarium?
It can, but a payara–piranha community tank is a poor default. NOAA advises selecting tankmates that are too large to fit inside a payara’s mouth; the agency identifies live goldfish as favorite prey. A piranha that is small enough to fit may be treated as food rather than a companion. A piranha that is too large to swallow may still be attacked, bitten, or stressed.

Risks of keeping them together
- Predation: A size gap can turn the piranha into prey.
- Injury: A failed strike or defensive bite can damage either fish.
- Chronic stress: Repeated pursuit and hiding can undermine feeding and health even without a successful kill.
- Feeding conflict: A fast, fish-eating payara and a piranha with a variable diet may compete at feeding time.
- Water-quality demands: Fish Laboratory emphasizes high-quality water, effective filtration, and strong aeration for aquarium payara; adding another large predator increases the biological load.
How to apply the mouth-size rule
Do not judge compatibility by similar body length alone. Compare the payara’s mouth opening with the piranha’s body depth and consider how quickly each fish will grow. Any fish that can fit in the payara’s mouth should be treated as an unsafe tankmate. Even fish that cannot fit require substantial swimming room, secure monitoring, and a plan for immediate separation.
Payara and piranhas compared
| Feature | Payara | Piranhas |
|---|---|---|
| Typical feeding mode | Open-water pursuit predator; fish-focused diet | Varies by species, season, age, and food supply |
| Teeth and jaws | Long lower-jaw fangs for impaling and holding fish | Cutting teeth suited to diets that may include fish, flesh, fins, insects, crustaceans, or plant matter |
| Predator–prey relationship | May take a piranha that is small enough to seize and swallow | A larger individual can injure a payara or resist an attack |
| Aquarium compatibility | Tankmates should be too large to fit in its mouth | Not automatically safe with another predator; size and enclosure conditions remain decisive |
| Care emphasis | Large swimming space, high-quality water, substantial filtration and aeration | Species-specific requirements; avoid assuming one piranha setup suits all genera |
What does a vampire fish eat?
Payara eat fish. In captivity, that fish-eating instinct means moving tankmates, feeder fish, and other appropriately sized fish can trigger pursuit. NOAA names live goldfish among favored prey, while the broader care guidance emphasizes maintaining excellent water quality with correct filtration and aeration. Feeding practices should therefore be planned around the payara’s predatory behavior rather than treating it as a general community fish.

Bottom line for owners
A payara can eat a piranha when the payara is sufficiently large and the piranha sufficiently small. The evidence establishes capability, not a universal preference or guaranteed result for every species. For aquariums, assume that any piranha small enough to fit in the payara’s mouth is at risk, and do not rely on temperament alone to make the combination safe.
