What Size Tank Should a Betta Fish Have?

A 5-gallon covered, heated and gently filtered aquarium is the practical minimum for one betta; a 10-gallon tank is more stable and beginner-friendly.

For one betta, choose a covered aquarium holding at least 5 US gallons, with an adjustable heater and gentle filtration. A 10-gallon tank is even easier for a beginner to keep stable and leaves more room for plants and swimming. Bowls and tiny decorative containers are not suitable long-term habitats.

How much space does one betta need?

Five gallons is the practical minimum recommendation for a single betta. Chewy Education’s 2025 care guide specifies “5 gallons or larger,” while Bettafish.org (updated February 23, 2024) recommends 5 gallons and calls 2.5 gallons the absolute minimum. PetMD’s 2024 care sheet lists 1 gallon or larger as a minimum, but that is a lower bare-minimum figure and still assumes a heater, filter, water testing and regular maintenance.

The larger recommendation is easier to maintain because more water changes temperature and chemistry more slowly. It also provides enough footprint for a low-flow filter, heater, plants and open swimming space after substrate and decorations reduce the usable volume.

Why a 10-gallon tank can be better

A 10-gallon aquarium is not too large for a betta. Its extra water volume gives beginners a wider margin against temperature and water-quality swings, and its larger footprint makes it easier to arrange plants and hides without blocking the surface. Choose a 10-gallon model if you have the room and want the most forgiving setup.

AQUANEAT Fish Tank, 1 Gallon Betta Fish Tank, Small Aquarium Kit with LED Light and Water Filter Pump
  • Compact: Dimension: 7.9"x5.9"x5.9"; 1 Gallon tank; ideal for small spaces, aquarium beginners caring for a single betta, a few shrimp, snails, or a tiny goldfish. Also works as a temporary hospital tank, quarantine tank, or desktop decor (After deducting the filter part, the actual usable volume is approximately 0.8 gal and it will further decrease after adding substrate)
  • Customizable Lighting: features a 3-color LED hood with 10 adjustable brightness levels to showcase your fish and tank décor
  • Self-Cleaning Filtration: Hidden filter keeps tank clean for easier maintenance. Note: Clean filter sponge and pump regularly to avoid clogging; regular water changes are required — this small tank does not support zero-maintenance use
  • Thoughtful Design: its top feeding hole allows for easy feeding without removing the lid; four silicone feet for stability and quiet operation
  • Complete Starter Kit: 1x 1 gallon Fish Tank, 1x Filter Sponge, 1x Adjustable Water Pump, 1x LED Hood (Note: The light requires a power transformer (not included) for use. Compatible transformers include 5V 0.5A, 5V 1A, 5V 1.5A, and 5V 2A)

Tank-size comparison

Tank size What the cited guidance says Practical interpretation
1 gallon PetMD (2024) lists 1 gallon or larger as a minimum habitat. A bare minimum with little stability or swimming room; not the preferred long-term choice.
2.5 gallons Bettafish.org (updated February 23, 2024) calls 2.5 gallons the absolute minimum. Below the practical recommendation and less forgiving of missed maintenance or equipment problems.
5 gallons Chewy Education (2025) specifies 5 gallons or larger; Bettafish.org recommends 5 gallons. The practical minimum for one betta when properly heated, filtered and maintained.
10 gallons No separate minimum is stated in the cited care sheets. An easier-to-stabilize choice with more room for plants and swimming.
15 gallons Chewy specifies 15 gallons for multiple female bettas; PetMD gives 15 gallons for multiple bettas or community fish depending on stocking. A stocking-specific size, not a reason to place multiple bettas together casually.

Measure the aquarium’s usable water volume after adding substrate and decor. A tank advertised at a nominal size will hold somewhat less water once it is set up.

What equipment belongs in a betta tank?

  • Secure lid: Bettas can jump. Leave a clear route to the surface because they use their labyrinth organ to breathe atmospheric air.
  • Adjustable heater and thermometer: Chewy and Bettafish.org give a target range of 76–81°F; PetMD lists 72–82°F. Aim for a stable tropical temperature and avoid rapid swings.
  • Gentle filter: Bettas dislike strong current. PetMD says filtration should process the tank’s water at least four times per hour, so choose a low-flow model or baffle the output if necessary.
  • Water conditioner: Treat tap water before it enters the aquarium.
  • Test kit or strips: Check pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate as part of routine care.
  • Rinsed freshwater substrate, smooth hides and live or soft artificial plants: Avoid sharp plastic edges that can tear fins.

How to set up the aquarium

  1. Select the tank: Buy a rectangular, covered aquarium rated at 5 US gallons or more. Choose 10 gallons if you want extra stability or a more spacious layout.
  2. Add the substrate and decor: Rinse freshwater substrate and arrange smooth hides and plants while keeping open access to the surface and a clear swimming area.
  3. Install filtration: Fit a low-flow filter. Verify that the outlet does not pin the betta in place or create a continuously turbulent surface.
  4. Install and set the heater: Use an adjustable heater and thermometer, then bring the water gradually into the stable tropical range recommended for your care plan.
  5. Condition the water: Add dechlorinator to replacement tap water according to its label. Match replacement-water temperature to the aquarium.
  6. Test the water: Monitor pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Continue regular testing after the fish is introduced rather than relying on clear-looking water.
  7. Secure the lid: Check that the cover fits tightly while still allowing the betta to reach the surface.

Can a betta live in a bowl?

A bowl or novelty container is unsuitable as a permanent habitat. These containers usually provide too little water volume for stable temperature and chemistry, little room for a properly sized low-flow filter and heater, and inadequate space for natural swimming and furnishings. Their open tops also make jumping easier. A covered, heated and filtered aquarium of at least 5 gallons is the safer baseline.

Can you keep more than one betta?

Male bettas

House a male betta alone. Never place two males together; territorial fighting can cause severe injury or death.

Female bettas

Multiple females require a substantially larger, carefully managed setup. Chewy specifies 15 gallons for multiple female bettas. A larger aquarium does not guarantee compatibility, so this is an advanced stocking decision rather than a beginner upgrade.

  • Convenient Feeding Design: The top cover includes a dedicated feeding opening, allowing easy access for daily feeding without needing to open the entire lid—keeping your fish secure and reducing evaporation

Community tanks

Bettafish.org advises 8–10 gallons or larger for a community habitat. PetMD specifies 15 gallons for multiple bettas or community fish depending on the number of fish. Treat tank mates as an individual-compatibility decision: provide adequate space, avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species, and be prepared to separate fish if conflict occurs.

Maintenance factors that make size important

In a larger aquarium, waste and temperature changes are diluted through a greater volume of water, giving you more time to detect and correct problems. A 5-gallon tank can work well, but its smaller margin makes dependable testing, conditioned water and correctly sized equipment especially important. A 10-gallon tank offers more room for plants and hides while making those conditions easier to keep steady.
