The AVMA discourages raw or undercooked animal-source proteins, including fish, and Cornell Feline Health Center does not recommend raw meat diets or treats because they can carry infectious organisms without a clearly demonstrated health benefit. A complete and balanced commercial cat food is the safer everyday choice.
Why raw fish is risky for cats
Raw fish can expose cats and their households to pathogens, parasites and nutritional problems. Cats may become visibly ill, carry an infection without obvious signs, or spread organisms through feces, saliva, food bowls and contaminated kitchen surfaces.
Bacteria, viruses and household contamination
AVMA lists Salmonella, Campylobacter, Clostridium, E. coli, Listeria monocytogenes, H5N1, Mycobacterium bovis and enterotoxigenic Staphylococcus aureus among organisms associated with contaminated raw animal-source proteins. FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine testing conducted during 2010–2012 found Salmonella in 15 of 196 raw commercial dog and cat food samples and Listeria monocytogenes in 32 of 196 samples, after screening more than 1,000 pet-food samples over two years.
Raw food can also spread germs around the kitchen and home. This matters especially when children, older adults, pregnant people or anyone with a weakened immune system lives with the cat.

Parasites and fish-specific hazards
Raw meat can transmit toxoplasmosis and other infections, according to Cornell. Fish may also contain parasites. The available veterinary guidance does not establish a universally safe raw-fish species or serving size for household feeding.
“Sushi-grade” or similar retail labeling does not make fish a proven safe food for cats. Such labels are not a veterinary nutrition standard, and they do not remove every pathogen, parasite or thiamine-related concern.
Thiaminase and thiamine deficiency
Some seafood contains thiaminase, an enzyme that interferes with thiamine (vitamin B1). CDC explains that cooking breaks down thiaminase and helps prevent thiamine deficiency in cats. Raw fish should never displace a nutritionally complete diet, particularly if it is offered repeatedly.

Does freezing, freeze-drying or dehydrating make fish safe?
No method should be treated as a guarantee that raw fish is safe. Freezing, freeze-drying and dehydrating do not kill all germs. They may change the number or activity of some organisms, but they do not provide the same pathogen-control assurance as thorough cooking.

What about H5N1?
H5N1 is an additional current concern for cats exposed to uncooked meat or contaminated raw pet food. FDA reports that cats are particularly sensitive to H5N1 and has described transmission through uncooked meats. FDA also reported H5N1 testing in specific lots of RAWR Raw Cat Food Chicken Eats after testing linked contaminated product with a cat that became ill and was euthanized.
Product advisories can change. If you feed any raw product, check current FDA notices and stop using a product named in an active recall or advisory. Neurologic or respiratory signs require urgent veterinary attention.

If your cat ate raw fish
A single bite does not prove that illness will occur, but it is sensible to monitor closely and tell your veterinarian what the cat ate, how much, and when. Do not induce vomiting or give human medicines unless a veterinarian specifically instructs you.
Contact a veterinarian promptly for
- Vomiting or diarrhea, especially if repeated or bloody
- Loss of appetite, marked lethargy or fever
- Tremors, seizures, weakness, trouble walking or other neurologic changes
- Coughing, difficulty breathing or other respiratory signs
Neurologic and respiratory signs are especially urgent because of the FDA’s H5N1 warning. Clean bowls, counters and other surfaces that contacted the fish, wash your hands, and handle feces carefully.

Thorough cooking is lower risk than serving fish raw. Use a food thermometer and follow USDA guidance for the fish’s safe internal temperature; do not judge doneness by color alone. Cooking reduces pathogen and thiaminase risks, but it does not make fish a complete diet.

Safer home-preparation steps
- Keep raw fish separate from ready-to-eat food and use clean utensils and a clean cutting surface.
- Cook the fish thoroughly and verify its internal temperature with a digital food thermometer.
- Serve it plain: no seasoning, oil, sauces or cooked bones.
- Refrigerate leftovers promptly or discard them rather than leaving them at room temperature.
- Wash hands, bowls, utensils and preparation surfaces after handling the fish; clean and disinfect contaminated areas.
Even cooked fish should remain an occasional addition, not a replacement for a complete and balanced cat food unless a veterinary nutritionist has formulated the entire diet.
What is the safest everyday diet?
Choose a commercial cat food labeled complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage. Cornell notes that commercial diets are developed to provide the appropriate balance of nutrients and calories. Check the package nutritional-adequacy statement rather than assuming that a product marketed as a topper, treat or fish recipe is nutritionally complete.
Comparing common options
| Option | Pathogen control | Nutrition and thiamine | Handling burden | Professional formulation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Raw fish | Highest uncertainty; pathogens and parasites may remain | Thiaminase may be present; not complete by itself | High household contamination risk | Not established as a safe universal plan |
| Thoroughly cooked plain fish | Lower risk than raw when cooked correctly | Cooking breaks down thiaminase, but fish alone is not complete | Requires separation, thermometer use and cleanup | Usually not a complete formulated diet |
| Complete and balanced commercial cat food | Manufactured-food controls; follow storage directions | Formulated nutrient balance | Lowest preparation burden | Nutrition adequacy statement on the label |
| Homemade or raw main diet formulated for one cat | Depends on ingredients and handling; raw plans retain raw-food risks | Can be balanced only with precise formulation | High | Should involve a veterinarian or veterinary nutritionist |
Is there a safe amount of raw fish?
No cited veterinary authority provides a universally safe raw-fish serving size for cats. Because risk varies with the fish, handling, the cat’s health and household members’ vulnerability, a small portion cannot be presented as risk-free. If you want fish included regularly, discuss a cooked, nutritionally appropriate plan with your veterinarian.

When to get professional diet advice
Talk with a veterinarian or veterinary nutritionist before making homemade food or any raw diet your cat’s main diet. Cornell advises using veterinarian-developed recipes for homemade diets, and CDC recommends professional guidance for owners considering raw feeding. This is particularly important for kittens, pregnant cats, older cats and cats with chronic disease.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can cats eat raw salmon?
Raw salmon is still raw animal protein: it can carry pathogens or parasites, and it may contain thiaminase. It is not recommended as a routine food or treat.
Is sushi-grade fish safe for cats?
No label guarantees that raw fish is free of every pathogen, parasite or nutritional hazard. Sushi-grade fish should not be treated as a proven safe cat food.
Can I give my cat cooked fish instead?
Plain, thoroughly cooked, boneless fish is lower risk than raw fish, but it is not nutritionally complete by itself. Keep it occasional unless your veterinarian has formulated a complete diet.
