Cat Keeps Peeing on Husband’s Things? 5 Possible Reasons and What to Do

A cat that pees on one person’s belongings is not necessarily acting out against them. Learn five possible causes, emergency warning signs, and practical next steps.

If your cat keeps peeing on your husband’s things, it does not prove the cat is angry at him, jealous, or trying to send a message. Urinating outside the litter box can have medical, litter-box, marking, or stress-related causes—and more than one may be involved. Treat a new or recurring pattern as a symptom to investigate, not a personal motive.

First, know when this is an emergency

Repeated trips to the litter box, straining, crying while urinating, blood in the urine, or frequent licking of the genitals can be signs of lower urinary tract disease. If your cat is passing little or no urine and seems increasingly distressed, seek emergency veterinary care immediately. A urethral obstruction is life-threatening; Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine calls it an “absolute emergency,” and the American Veterinary Medical Association also identifies obstruction as an emergency.

For new or recurring urination outside the box, arrange a veterinary exam even if your cat otherwise seems well. A veterinarian may start with a physical examination and urinalysis, then recommend tests such as blood work, imaging, or a urine culture depending on the findings. Cornell’s overview of feline lower urinary tract disease and the AVMA’s 2024 client brochure explain why urinary symptoms need prompt attention.

Five possible reasons your cat is peeing on his things

These are practical possibilities, not a ranked list or a diagnosis. A medical problem can also trigger a lasting litter-box aversion or preference for a new spot.

1. A urinary or other medical problem

Inflammation or stones in the lower urinary tract can make urination painful, frequent, or urgent. Kidney disease, diabetes, and thyroid disease can increase urine output. Pain or limited mobility can make a litter box difficult to reach. If urination has changed, do not assume the cause is behavioral before a veterinarian checks for illness.

2. Something about the litter box is putting him off

A cat may avoid a box because of its cleanliness, size, cover, location, litter, or accessibility. Scented or recently changed litter, a noisy location, a box that is too small, or the risk of another pet blocking or ambushing the cat can all matter. The Cornell guide to house soiling discusses these environmental factors.

3. He has developed a preference for a surface or spot

Some cats come to prefer soft surfaces such as clothing or bedding, or repeatedly choose one location. A painful urination episode or an unpleasant experience near the box may start the pattern; repeated use can reinforce it. The belongings themselves may be an accessible, familiar surface—not evidence that the cat has singled out their owner.

4. He may be urine marking

Marking often looks different from emptying the bladder: the cat may stand, raise or quiver his tail, and leave a small amount of urine on a vertical surface. Perceived threats, including other cats, can contribute. A cat squatting to urinate on a horizontal pile of clothes may be showing a different pattern, but posture and location alone cannot diagnose the cause. If you do not see it happen, a video may help your veterinarian assess the behavior.

5. Stress or conflict may be contributing

Changes in routine, tension with another animal, territorial threats, frustration, or conflict near a litter box can contribute to marking or other urinary signs. Stress does not rule out disease, so it is not a reason to skip veterinary assessment. Several causes can overlap.

What to do after arranging veterinary care

  1. Observe the pattern. If you can do so without disturbing your cat, note whether he stands or squats, how much urine he leaves, and whether the target is vertical or horizontal. A video can help when you do not witness the behavior directly.
  2. Review the box setup. Check cleanliness, dimensions, entry access, cover, location, and litter scent and texture. In a multi-cat home, provide multiple boxes in separate, accessible areas and consider whether another animal can block a route to one.
  3. Clean soiled items promptly. Use an odor-neutralizing cleaner suitable for the material and follow its label directions. Cornell advises against ammonia- or vinegar-containing cleaners: their smell can resemble urine or may irritate. A cleaner can help with cleanup, but it does not treat urinary disease or guarantee the behavior will not recur.
  4. Do not punish him. Punishment is ineffective and may increase anxiety, potentially worsening house soiling.
  5. Do not make treatment changes on your own. Do not change your cat’s diet or start medication as a substitute for veterinary advice. Medication requires veterinary oversight, and environmental changes may also be part of a treatment plan.

If you are considering a new box, litter, or cleaner

Choose based on the problem you are trying to address rather than assuming a product will solve the behavior. For a box, consider dimensions, entry height, accessibility, covered versus uncovered design, and ease of cleaning. For litter, consider scent and texture as well as whether you can keep the box clean. For a cleaner, check that it is suitable for the soiled material and follow the product label. The cited veterinary guidance does not establish a universally best product or endorse a particular brand.
