The Catalyst Pet Scoop is a large, wide-slatted metal scoop designed for clumping litter. Cats.com’s reviewer reports that it sifted effectively across several tested litter types and felt sturdier than inexpensive plastic scoops, but also found it heavy, awkward in a small box, and prone to letting very small clumps fall through. It is most promising if you want a substantial scoop for a roomy box and your litter forms clumps large enough to stay on its slats.
What is the Catalyst Pet Scoop?
Catalyst Pet’s current product page lists the scoop at 13.5 inches long, 6 inches wide, and 2 inches tall, with a steel frame, wooden handle, wide slats, and a deep shovel. The brand says the slats let clean litter fall through, the broad head makes sifting easier, and the deep shovel can hold large scoops. See the Catalyst Pet slatted steel litter scoop for its current specifications and price; the page has displayed more than one price, so check the listing before buying.
Catalyst’s 2022 introduction article gives more specific construction details: it describes a stainless-steel wire shovel and a metal and sustainable-wood handle with foam cushioning and an epoxy-resin coating. The article says the coating is intended to resist corrosion and that the scoop can be rinsed with water. These are the brand’s dated descriptions; the current product listing uses broader material wording, and the coating’s durability has not been independently established here. Catalyst Pet’s July 27, 2022 introduction has the original details.
How well does it sift litter?
In its review, updated January 8, 2026, Cats.com says its reviewer tried the scoop with multiple litters, including clumping clay and alternative products, and compared it with more than six other scoops. The reviewer reports that the evenly spaced slats sifted effectively across the tested litter types, including oblong pellets, while the steel construction and handle felt sturdier than cheap plastic scoops. Those findings describe that reviewer’s evaluation, not a guarantee for every litter or household. Read the Cats.com review.

Slats are a trade-off: they allow loose litter to pass through, but small clumps or waste pieces may pass through as well. Cats.com’s reviewer noticed that problem with very small clumps. The scoop is described by Catalyst for clumping litter, and the reviewer found it less effective with non-clumping litter, where waste may not form pieces that can be separated from clean granules by sifting.
Catalyst also sells softwood clumping litter, a relevant example of the kind of consumable the scoop may be used with. The litter page’s performance claims are the brand’s, not independent scoop-test results.

Will its size and weight suit you?
The 6-inch-wide head can cover more litter in one pass than a narrow scoop, but a broad, deep head also takes up more room inside the box. Cats.com’s reviewer reports that the scoop felt heavy and could be awkward to maneuver in a small litter box. The reviewer also notes that getting used to its scale may take practice, so fewer passes are a possibility rather than a universal outcome.
- Box space: Consider whether a 6-inch-wide head can turn and reach corners in your box without knocking against the sides.
- Your hand and grip: The brand describes a rounded handle as comfortable, including for people with arthritis. That is marketing language, not an established accessibility finding; the reviewer’s report that the scoop feels heavy may matter if weight or grip is a concern.
- Clump size: If your litter often makes small, fragile clumps, the wide slats may let some pieces through. A scoop with narrower openings may retain them more reliably.
- How you scoop: A larger shovel may suit someone who prefers broad passes, but a smaller tool may be easier to position in a compact box.
Who should consider it—and who may want another design?
It may suit you if
- You use clumping litter and its clumps are large enough to stay on the slats.
- You prefer a substantial metal scoop over a lightweight plastic one.
- Your litter box has room for a wide, deep head to move and turn.
Look at other scoop designs if
- You use non-clumping litter, based on the weaker performance reported by the reviewer.
- Your box is small or difficult to reach into with a broad tool.
- You need a lighter scoop, or you regularly deal with small clumps that could fall through the openings.
Before choosing, compare scoop width and depth, slat spacing, total weight, handle shape, box maneuverability, and the way your particular litter clumps. Cats.com reported that Catalyst Pet’s listing had a 4.8-out-of-5 rating from more than 400 ratings and that about 6% were three stars or lower; those are time-sensitive figures reported by Cats.com in its 2026 review, not independently audited counts.
