Maria Avila, Chris Brown’s former housekeeper, accepted a reduced $9.5 million damages award after a judge ruled that the jury’s original $12.9 million award was excessive. Her acceptance avoids a new trial limited to damages; the available reports do not say whether the award has been paid.
What happened to the award?
Avila accepted the reduction after Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Huey P. Cotton gave her a choice: consent to a $9.5 million award or face a new trial on damages. Rolling Stone Australia reported on October 2, 2026, that Avila’s lawyer, Nancy Doumanian, filed a notice accepting the reduction. The report quotes the notice: “Maria Avila hereby unequivocally accepts the [downward adjustment] and consents to the reduction of her damages award to $9,500,000.”
This is an acceptance of a reduced damages award, not evidence that money has been paid or that collection has occurred. The reports describe the choice as avoiding a damages retrial; they do not establish that the entire case was settled.
How did the case reach $9.5 million?
The case arose from a dog attack in December 2020 at Brown’s home in Tarzana while Avila was working there as a housekeeper. A jury later awarded her $12.9 million in damages. On September 30, 2026, the Los Angeles Times reported that Judge Cotton found that award excessive and conditionally ordered a new trial limited to damages unless Avila agreed to reduce it to $9.5 million. She accepted that reduction, according to the subsequent Rolling Stone report.

The reported retrial concerned damages only. The accounts do not say that the judge overturned the jury’s liability finding.
Why did the judge reduce the award?
The Los Angeles Times reported that the judge found insufficient evidence to support extensive permanent nerve damage and the amount assigned to future pain and suffering. That was the reported basis for calling the award excessive; it does not mean Avila suffered no injuries.

Has Avila received the money?
The cited reports establish that she accepted the reduced award, but do not report payment or give a collection timeline. Acceptance resolves the stated choice between taking the reduced damages amount and retrying damages; it should not be confused with confirmation that funds have been transferred.
