Divers and researchers recovered the most substantial known primate-fossil assemblage yet reported from Hispaniola at Cueva Macho in the Dominican Republic. A 2024 study of the extinct monkey Antillothrix bernensis describes seven crania, five mandibles and dozens of postcranial bones, revealing a species that varied in form but shows no strong evidence of male–female anatomical separation.
What was found in the cave?
Cueva Macho is a cave system in the Dominican Republic where divers and researchers recovered an unusually large sample of Antillothrix bernensis, a monkey found only on Hispaniola. Institutional reports describe the site as the richest known primate-fossil site on the island. That is an island-level comparison—not a claim that it is the largest monkey-fossil collection anywhere in the world.
The expanded material includes:
- Seven crania (skulls)
- Five mandibles (lower jaws)
- Dozens of postcranial elements, including bones from below the skull
The species sample also includes material from other cave systems on Hispaniola, so the entire expanded sample should not be treated as if it came from Cueva Macho alone.
Why the new skulls matter
A much clearer picture of variation
Fossil primates are often represented by only a few fragmentary individuals. Multiple skulls and jaws let researchers test whether differences reflect normal variation within one species or indicate separate species or sexes. The study’s authors describe A. bernensis as morphologically variable but monomorphic: individuals differ in shape and proportions, yet the sample does not divide into convincing male and female groups.

That conclusion matters because a small fossil sample can make ordinary individual differences look like sexual dimorphism or even a second species. The larger collection provides a stronger population-level comparison without requiring a split into separate male and female forms.
The front teeth are described for the first time
The paper gives the first description of the species’ complete anterior dentition—the incisors and canines at the front of the mouth. Those teeth add anatomical evidence that was missing from earlier, sparser remains and help researchers compare how this extinct island monkey was built.

What size was Antillothrix bernensis?
Halenar-Price and colleagues estimated body masses of 2.4 to 3.4 kilograms across the studied sample. These are estimates for different fossil individuals, not the weight of one animal and not a general figure for monkeys.
Estimated endocranial volumes—the space inside the skull associated with the brain—range from 40 to 45 cubic centimeters. Like the body-mass figures, this is a sample range rather than a single species-wide measurement.

What “monomorphic” means here
In this study, monomorphic does not mean every animal looked identical. The fossils show anatomical variation. It means the researchers do not find a consistent, substantial split that would support identifying separate male and female morphs from the skull and jaw measurements available.
The result is a more cautious interpretation of the species: differences among the fossils can be studied as population variation without assuming that two sexes—or two species—are represented.

When did this monkey disappear?
Institutional reporting places the extinction of A. bernensis sometime within the last 10,000 years. That is a broad interval, not a precise extinction date. The available report does not establish one exact age for the Cueva Macho cache, and the fossils should not all be described as being exactly 10,000 years old.

Hispaniola’s cave systems have preserved remains of animals that are otherwise poorly represented. Cueva Macho adds an especially valuable concentration of monkey fossils, while material from other caves broadens the comparison across the species’ known record. Together, the specimens allow researchers to examine anatomy at a scale rarely possible for a fossil primate.
