Why put a radioisotope in a rhino horn?
Trafficked horns can pass through supply chains hidden among other cargo. The project’s stated description is that embedded radioisotopes enable identification at borders and transport hubs, disrupting illegal supply chains and creating a deterrent-and-detection system. That is a conservation and enforcement strategy, not a consumer product or an attempt to make every piece of horn lethal.
How the marking system is intended to work
Under veterinary and radiation-safety oversight, a specialist team drills a small hole in the horn and fixes a cobalt-60 source inside it. Radiation portal monitors or other screening equipment can then detect a marked horn during transport. The intervention is performed on a living animal; it is not a procedure readers should attempt or replicate.
Are radioactive rhino horns poisonous to people?
“Poisoning consumers” is an inaccurate description of the project’s purpose. The 2026 study says its focus was whether the horn could be detected and whether the intervention was safe for the animals. It acknowledges that someone ingesting or injecting horn material could face exposure concerns, but that possibility is different from deliberately poisoning consumers.

The authors of the 2026 Scientific Reports paper conclude: “From both a conservation and radiological safety standpoint, the greater detriment lies in inaction against poaching, not in the controlled and limited use of radioactive sources for protection.” This is the study authors’ risk judgment, not proof that exposure is harmless in every circumstance.
What the 2026 study actually tested
Animals and timing
- Twenty rhinos were implanted in June 2024: 18 white rhinos and two black rhinos.
- Researchers assessed 16 white rhinos in January 2025, six months after implantation.
- Four implanted animals were not assessed because terrain created safety constraints.
- Five untreated white rhinos served as controls.
Reported health finding
Among the 16 assessed white rhinos, the paper reports no adverse biological effects in the six-month measurements, with recorded dose rates below deterministic thresholds. These are observations from that sample and follow-up point. They do not show that every rare or long-term effect is impossible, and they are not a population-wide safety guarantee.

What remains unproven
The study does not by itself demonstrate fewer poaching incidents, more seizures, or successful interceptions at scale. Its authors identify further evaluation of shielding, concealment, transport routes, environmental conditions, border crossings and airport screening as needed.
Radioisotope marking is not the same as chemical horn treatment
Older proposals used ectoparasiticides and dyes infused into horns. A 2012 Save the Rhino International article discussed concerns about that approach, including uncertain deterrent effects and doubts about whether treatment would permeate the horn adequately. Those criticisms concern chemical infusion, not the cobalt-60 marking intervention studied in 2024–2025 and reported in 2026.

What this means for rhino conservation
The intervention targets trafficking detection rather than replacing rangers, intelligence work, prosecutions or habitat protection. Its value will depend on whether marked horns can be found reliably in real shipments without creating unacceptable risks for animals, workers, the public or the environment. Those operational outcomes have not yet been established by the reported animal-health measurements.
The clearest evidence so far is limited but specific: 16 white rhinos had no adverse biological effects recorded six months after implantation, while four implanted animals could not be assessed in that campaign. That finding supports continued evaluation; it is not a final verdict on long-term safety or conservation effectiveness.
