Salmon reproduce sexually by spawning: the female releases eggs into a gravel nest, and the male releases sperm—called milt—over them. Fertilization happens outside the female’s body, rather than through internal copulation.
How do salmon mate?
-
They reach spawning habitat. Adult salmon return from the sea to freshwater to reproduce, often traveling back to the river where they hatched. Some Atlantic salmon travel more than 6,000 miles before returning to spawn, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
-
The female makes a redd. She uses her tail to dig a shallow nest in the gravel. A redd provides a place for eggs to be deposited and covered.
-
The fish release eggs and milt. The female releases eggs into the redd while a male releases milt, or sperm, over them. NOAA describes males competing with other males for spawning rights and says spawners release eggs and milt into the gravel (NOAA Fisheries).

The eggs are covered. The female moves gravel over the eggs, where they develop. Because sperm meets eggs outside the female, salmon use external fertilization.
Do salmon lay eggs, and how many?
Yes. Female salmon lay eggs in gravel nests, but the number varies by species and individual. NOAA reports an average of 7,500 eggs per Atlantic salmon female and a range of 2,000 to 4,500 for a sockeye salmon female. Those are species-specific figures, not a universal salmon egg count. NOAA also reports that 15 to 35 percent of Atlantic salmon eggs survive to the fry stage (NOAA Fisheries, Atlantic salmon; NOAA Fisheries, sockeye salmon).
Rank #2
Do salmon die after mating?
It depends on the kind of salmon. Pacific salmon generally die soon after spawning, while Atlantic salmon often survive and may return to sea. Some Atlantic salmon spawn again, although repeat spawning is uncommon. So it is inaccurate to say that all salmon die after reproducing.
