They are commonly kept in coldwater or subtropical aquariums, but “cold-water” does not mean they can safely endure any temperature or rapid swings. Use a thermometer, choose a stable cool-to-temperate range, and adjust equipment to the actual conditions in your tank.
Which “minnow” is this guide about?
The advice here applies to the White Cloud Mountain Minnow, Tanichthys albonubes. The common name “minnow” is also used for unrelated freshwater species, so their care requirements should not be assumed to match.
Aquarium Industries lists a maximum size of about 4 cm in a care sheet dated approximately 2010. Their small adult size does not remove the need for swimming room, oxygenated water, and compatible tank mates.

| Source | Published or retrieved context | Listed temperature | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fishkeeping.co.uk | Publication year not stated in the retrieved result | 15–22°C (59–72°F) | Coldwater care-sheet range |
| Aquarium Industries | Care sheet dated approximately 2010 | 18–26°C (64–79°F) | Range presented as suitable for cold- or tropical-water aquaria |
| FishBase and Aquarium Industries | Survival figure; publication year not stated for FishBase | Down to 5°C (41°F) | A reported survival limit, not a recommended routine target |
Because these references do not establish one universally agreed optimum, prioritize stable, appropriate cool-to-temperate water over chasing a single number. Measure the aquarium itself: an unheated room may become too warm in summer or too cold overnight, and a sudden change can be more stressful than a modest difference within a suitable range.
Practical temperature management
- Place a reliable aquarium thermometer where it reflects the tank’s actual water temperature.
- Check seasonal and overnight changes, not just the temperature at feeding time.
- Use heating or cooling equipment when the room cannot keep the aquarium consistently within your chosen range.
- Do not deliberately cool the tank toward 5°C simply because the species has been reported to survive that low.
Tank layout, water movement, and oxygen
White Cloud Mountain Minnows are active swimmers. The Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA) advises: “As they are active fish, it is also important to provide danios and white cloud mountain minnows with space to swim, and a moderate current to increase oxygen levels in the water.” Arrange décor and plants so that a clear swimming area remains, while providing cover at the sides or back.

- Compact: Dimension: 7.9"x5.9"x5.9"; 1 Gallon tank; ideal for small spaces, aquarium beginners caring for a single betta, a few shrimp, snails, or a tiny goldfish. Also works as a temporary hospital tank, quarantine tank, or desktop decor (After deducting the filter part, the actual usable volume is approximately 0.8 gal and it will further decrease after adding substrate)
- Customizable Lighting: features a 3-color LED hood with 10 adjustable brightness levels to showcase your fish and tank décor
- Self-Cleaning Filtration: Hidden filter keeps tank clean for easier maintenance. Note: Clean filter sponge and pump regularly to avoid clogging; regular water changes are required — this small tank does not support zero-maintenance use
- Thoughtful Design: its top feeding hole allows for easy feeding without removing the lid; four silicone feet for stability and quiet operation
- Complete Starter Kit: 1x 1 gallon Fish Tank, 1x Filter Sponge, 1x Adjustable Water Pump, 1x LED Hood (Note: The light requires a power transformer (not included) for use. Compatible transformers include 5V 0.5A, 5V 1A, 5V 1.5A, and 5V 2A)
A moderate, well-distributed flow is preferable to a blasting jet. Point the filter outlet or use a spray bar so the surface is gently disturbed and fish can move between faster and calmer areas.
Tank size and group size
The references used for this guide do not provide a consistent, sufficiently supported minimum aquarium volume or minimum shoal size. Rather than treating an unsupported number as a rule, select the largest practical aquarium you can maintain, preserve open swimming space, and observe whether the fish can swim normally without crowding or persistent aggression.

Feeding White Cloud Mountain Minnows
Use a fine flake food made for small aquarium fish as the everyday staple. Feed only what the group consumes promptly so uneaten food does not degrade water quality.
Both retrieved care references support occasional additions such as brine shrimp; Aquarium Industries also mentions frozen bloodworm, while Fishkeeping.co.uk mentions peas. Offer these as occasional variety rather than replacing the staple diet, and remove leftovers.

- Contains one (1) API TAP WATER CONDITIONER Aquarium Water Conditioner 16-Ounce Bottle
- Neutralizes chlorine, chloramines and other chemicals to make tap water safe for fish
- Prevents tap water chemicals from causing gill destruction, tissue irritation and fish death
- Super strength, high concentration formula
- Use when adding or changing water and when adding new fish to freshwater and saltwater aquariums
Choosing tank mates
Do not house these minnows with animals large enough to swallow them. Fishkeeping.co.uk specifically recommends companions that cannot fit the minnows in their mouths. Match prospective tank mates for peaceful behavior, compatible temperature, and similar water-quality needs; avoid aggressive or predatory species.
Routine care checklist
- Measure temperature regularly and watch for abrupt changes.
- Keep filtration and surface movement adequate for oxygenation without creating exhausting flow.
- Maintain an unobstructed swimming lane plus areas of cover.
- Feed small portions of fine flake food and vary the diet occasionally with suitable foods.
- Remove uneaten food and perform the aquarium maintenance schedule appropriate to your system.
- Review every tank mate for the risk of predation before adding it.
Never release unwanted minnows
Do not release aquarium fish, plants, or water into ponds, streams, or other local waters. NSW Department of Primary Industries warns that introducing fish outside their natural range can create ecological impacts. Rehome unwanted fish through a responsible aquarium keeper, retailer, rescue, or local authority instead.
