A1 and A2 are inherited variants of the beta-casein protein. Indian native cattle tend to carry A2 alleles more often, but that population pattern does not prove that their milk prevents cancer or that A1 milk is carcinogenic.
What “A1” and “A2” mean
A1 and A2 describe variants of bovine beta-casein, one of the proteins in cow’s milk. They are not separate species of milk and do not classify a product as safe or unsafe by themselves.
During digestion, A1 beta-casein can release a peptide called beta-casomorphin-7 (BCM-7). That mechanism has prompted hypotheses about digestive and other health effects. A plausible mechanism, however, is not proof that a food causes cancer in people.
What human studies actually show
The most useful evidence is a 2019 systematic review in Nutrition Reviews that included 15 randomized controlled trials, two case-control studies and eight ecological studies. Its certainty ratings differed sharply by outcome.

The review covered human clinical and epidemiological evidence published before October 2017. It supports caution about how confidently claims are phrased, not a categorical cancer warning.
Why the cancer claim is not established
An EFSA literature review covering evidence up to 2009 found proposed links between A1 milk and disease inconclusive, according to a Scroll fact-check. The later systematic review likewise did not demonstrate cancer causation.

“Not shown to cause cancer” is not the same as “proven safe for every individual or every possible outcome.” It means that the cited human evidence does not support telling consumers that A1 milk causes cancer. More research could refine understanding of digestive or other effects, but a cancer-prevention claim for A2 milk is not justified by these findings.
Do native or jallikattu-associated cattle produce safer milk?
“Jallikattu cattle” is a cultural and sporting description, not a laboratory milk-safety category. The relevant question is the animal’s beta-casein genotype and the ordinary handling of its milk.

An ICAR-NBAGR review published in 2022 reported high A2-allele and A2A2-genotype frequencies across the surveyed Indian native breeds. Crossbred and taurine populations contained more A1A2 animals. A 2022 Indian cattle-genetics study estimated an A1-allele frequency of about 29% in crossbred cattle; it reported that A1A1 animals were nearly absent in native cattle and about 9% in crossbred cattle and breeding bulls.

These are genetic-frequency findings at the population level. They cannot be converted into a disease-risk ranking for an individual carton of milk without evidence linking that product, dose and outcome in people.

Is A2 milk better for everyone?
The available human evidence leaves room for digestive differences for some people, with moderate-certainty evidence for adverse digestive effects in the 2019 review. It does not establish that everyone will feel better on A2 milk, nor that A2 milk provides a general protection against cancer or other serious disease.
India’s ICAR Indian Farming publication stated in 2021 that, given the lack of concrete scientific evidence for A1 or BCM-7 harm and the predominance of A2 milk in Indian cattle, there is no need to move exclusively to A2 milk. That position is consistent with separating a breed or genotype preference from a medical claim.

How to judge an A2-labelled product
If you are choosing milk for taste, tolerance or a personal preference, assess the product on evidence that can actually be checked:
- Look for a defined claim. “A2” should refer to beta-casein genotype, not an implication that the milk prevents cancer.
- Check source transparency. A credible label should identify the herd or breed source and explain how animals were classified.
- Prefer testing information. Genotype documentation or independent testing is more informative than imagery or broad “native cow” language alone.
- Apply normal food-safety standards. Pasteurization where applicable, hygienic milking, refrigeration and an intact supply chain remain essential regardless of A1 or A2 status.
- Compare practical factors. Price and availability can differ, but a higher price is not evidence of cancer prevention.
What to do if milk causes symptoms
Persistent digestive symptoms after drinking milk deserve an individual medical assessment rather than a self-diagnosis based on social-media claims about A1 or A2. A clinician can help determine whether the problem is related to milk itself, quantity, another ingredient or a separate gastrointestinal condition.
Practical verdict
Current human evidence does not substantiate the claim that “foreign” A1 milk causes cancer. Native Indian cattle generally have more A2 alleles, while crossbred and taurine cattle have more A1A2 animals, but those genetic patterns do not demonstrate a cancer difference. Choose milk using documented genotype information, normal food-safety controls and your own tolerance—not unsupported disease claims.
