A homeowner near Scotchtown in Orange County, New York, uncovered a complete adult American mastodon jaw in late September 2024 after spotting two unusual teeth among plant fronds. A New York State Museum and SUNY Orange excavation recovered the jaw, a toe-bone fragment and part of a rib—one of the most significant recent Ice Age discoveries in the state.
What was found in the backyard?
The homeowner first noticed two teeth at the surface and then found two more only inches underground. Experts from the New York State Museum and SUNY Orange excavated the area and recovered a complete, well-preserved lower jaw from an adult mastodon, along with a piece of toe bone and a rib fragment.
The official accounts describe the animal as an American mastodon (Mammut americanum), an extinct relative of modern elephants. The homeowner was not publicly identified.
Where did the discovery happen?
The fossils were found near Scotchtown in Orange County, in New York’s Hudson Valley region. Orange County has produced about one-third of the more than 150 mastodon fossils found statewide, according to the New York State Museum, making it New York’s leading concentration area for these animals.

Is the mastodon jaw authentic?
Yes. The jaw was excavated and documented by specialists from the New York State Museum and SUNY Orange. Its completeness and preservation were confirmed in the museum’s public announcement, which identified it as an adult mastodon jaw.
How large were American mastodons?
The New York State Museum says a typical American mastodon stood roughly 8 to 10 feet at the shoulder and weighed about 4 to 5 tons. Mastodons had distinctive, ridged teeth adapted for crushing and grinding vegetation, unlike the flatter teeth of mammoths that were better suited to grazing.

How old is the jaw?
A final age had not been announced in the available official accounts. The museum said the fossils would be carbon-dated and studied to establish their age, diet and habitat. Until those analyses are released, the jaw should be described as an Ice Age mastodon fossil rather than assigned a specific date.
Why this discovery matters
A rare complete jaw
The New York State Museum described the find as New York’s first complete mastodon jaw discovered in more than 11 years. A complete jaw preserves both teeth and bone in a way that isolated teeth or scattered fragments cannot, giving researchers a stronger basis for identifying the animal and investigating its biology.

Clues about an ancient ecosystem
Curator Robert Feranec said the jaw offers an opportunity to study the species’ ecology and improve understanding of Ice Age ecosystems in the region. The associated toe and rib fragments may provide additional information about the individual and the conditions in which it was buried.
A contribution to New York’s fossil record
The find adds to a substantial statewide record while reinforcing Orange County’s importance. Each well-documented specimen helps scientists map where mastodons lived and how their remains are preserved in New York’s sediments.

What scientific work comes next?
- Carbon dating: Researchers planned radiocarbon testing to determine when the mastodon lived.
- Diet analysis: The teeth and other evidence may be examined for clues to the animal’s vegetation and feeding habits.
- Habitat reconstruction: Fossil context and laboratory results can help identify the local Ice Age environment.
- Conservation: The bones will be stabilized and prepared for long-term preservation.
- Public programming: The museum said the specimen was intended for educational and public programs after study.
No completed dating, diet or habitat report, and no confirmed exhibition date, was identified in the official information available for this article.

| Feature | Scotchtown discovery | Another notable New York case |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | Private backyard near Scotchtown, Orange County | Backyard discovery in 1999; excavation in 2000 |
| Remains | Complete adult jaw, toe-bone piece and rib fragment | Almost-complete skeleton |
| Public access | Planned preservation and public programming; display status not yet confirmed | Displayed at the Museum of the Earth since 2003 |
| Scientific results | Carbon dating and diet and habitat analyses announced; final results not stated | Not stated in the available account |
The comparison shows why completeness and context matter: a jaw can answer different questions from a nearly whole skeleton, while both discoveries expand knowledge of mastodons in New York.

Could the public see the jaw?
The New York State Museum said the specimen would be preserved for public programming after scientific analysis. That announcement did not provide a confirmed gallery, exhibition date or permanent display location, so visitors should check the museum’s current notices before planning a trip.
What the homeowner did right
- The unusual teeth were left in place long enough for experts to assess the site.
- The homeowner contacted specialists rather than attempting a large excavation alone.
- Professional recovery preserved the jaw and associated fragments together, retaining their scientific context.
For anyone who encounters a possible fossil, photographing it, noting the location and contacting a local museum or university is safer and more useful than removing surrounding sediment without guidance.
