How to assess complete-and-balanced and other label claims
AAFCO says the nutritional adequacy statement is key to matching a food to a pet’s needs. “Complete” means required nutrients are present; “balanced” means they are present in appropriate ratios. The statement identifies the life stage for which the food is intended and should be checked on the exact recipe’s package.
In the United States, FDA explains that a “complete and balanced” claim can be substantiated through either meeting an AAFCO nutrient profile or passing a feeding trial conducted using AAFCO procedures. AAFCO’s role is not product approval: it states that it does not regulate, approve, certify, or endorse individual animal feeds or pet foods, and does not review individual company labels. AAFCO’s label-reading guidance, labeling information, and the FDA’s complete-and-balanced explanation provide the relevant US context.

“Grain-free,” “gluten-free,” or “fish-free” may help you screen a recipe for a specific preference or need, but those terms do not replace the adequacy statement. For a diagnosed allergy or medical condition, choose food with your veterinarian rather than relying on front-of-pack language alone.

- Check the adequacy statement and life stage. Confirm that the package says the exact recipe is complete and balanced for the life stage you need.
- Read the ingredient list and protein source. Ingredients appear in descending order by weight. Consider the named protein and the full list in light of your cat’s preferences or veterinary guidance.
- Interpret the guaranteed analysis cautiously. Note which values are minimums and which are maximums; these figures alone are not a complete nutrient profile.
- Use calories to plan portions. Compare calories per can or serving with your cat’s daily energy needs. The feeding directions are general, not an individualized calorie prescription.
- Calculate cost per day, not just price per can. Divide the amount you expect to spend by the number of feeding days the product provides at your cat’s portion. Account for the recipe’s calories and the cat’s actual daily needs; can prices alone do not make a fair comparison.
- Check format and handling. Choose a texture and format your cat will eat, follow any hydration directions for freeze-dried food, transition gradually as directed, and refrigerate opened wet food as instructed.
The product-page figures above give one example of calories per can size, but an individual cat’s needs vary. For a cat with a medical condition, a major diet change, or a prescribed calorie target, ask your veterinarian to help set portions.
