Otodus megalodon may have reached about 24.3 metres (80 feet), according to a 2025 study—but that figure is an extrapolated possible maximum, not the measured length of a complete fossil shark. A 2026 study confirmed that rediscovered Danish vertebrae include a centrum 23 cm in diameter, supporting an important part of the estimate. No complete Megalodon skeleton has been found.
How big was Megalodon?
The largest scientifically justifiable estimate currently proposed is about 24.3 m (80 ft), from a 2025 reassessment by Kenshu Shimada and coauthors. The same study estimated that an animal of that length could have weighed around 94 tonnes. Both figures are model-based: no complete Megalodon has been measured or weighed.
The study also estimated that newborn Megalodon were about 3.6–3.9 m long. That estimate comes from vertebral growth bands and is separate from the proposed adult maximum. Read the 2025 study in Palaeontologia Electronica.
What does the 2026 vertebra study confirm?
In 2026, researchers reported rediscovering a set of Danish Megalodon vertebrae excavated in 1978 and later thought lost. The disarticulated vertebral centra were located in the Natural History Museum of Denmark collection, catalogued as NHMD 157890. The paper confirms a maximum reported centrum diameter of 23 cm.

The vertebrae are not an 80-foot skeleton. They formed one of two vertebral specimens used in the earlier size work, and the researchers describe the Danish material as critical to the 24.3 m estimate. The 2026 paper strengthens the evidence for the vertebral measurement; it does not directly establish the total length of the shark. Read the 2026 vertebra study.
Why did the estimated maximum increase?
Earlier tooth-based estimates commonly put Megalodon’s maximum length around 15–18 m, according to the Natural History Museum in London. Teeth are among the most frequently preserved evidence for this shark, but using them to estimate total length requires a relationship between tooth size and body size.

The 2025 reassessment instead examined vertebral material and compared body proportions across 165 extinct and living shark species from ten orders. It used those comparisons to infer dimensions not preserved in the fossils, including the head and tail. The authors proposed that Megalodon may have had a relatively slender body, rather than simply applying great white shark proportions at a larger scale.
| Estimate | Evidence and method | What the number represents |
|---|---|---|
| 15–18 m | Earlier estimates summarized by the Natural History Museum; based primarily on teeth and tooth-to-body comparisons. | A commonly cited earlier maximum range, not the length of a complete measured animal. Natural History Museum summary. |
| 24.3 m (about 80 ft) | 2025 study using vertebral specimens and comparative body proportions from 165 shark species across ten orders. | A proposed possible maximum inferred for missing anatomy, not a directly measured complete shark. 2025 study. |
These figures are not competing measurements of the same intact fossil. They differ in the evidence and comparative methods used to reconstruct anatomy that has not been preserved. A 2024 methodological paper cautions that the choice of proxy can affect estimates of extinct animals’ size and form, so the newer estimate should be treated as a reasoned possibility rather than a settled measurement. How certain is the 80-foot estimate?
The direct observation is a large vertebral centrum, reported at 23 cm in diameter, within incomplete and disarticulated fossil material. The total length, mass, body shape, and birth size are reconstructions based on those remains and comparisons with other sharks. Because the skeleton is incomplete and cartilaginous, those inferences remain uncertain.
Shimada, lead author of the 2026 study, described 24.3 m as “currently the largest possible scientifically justifiable estimate” for O. megalodon, while noting that a growth model could theoretically allow a slightly greater length. That is a statement about the upper end of what the available evidence can support, not proof that an individual reached exactly 24.3 m. DePaul University’s account of the 2026 study.

What else do the vertebrae suggest about the shark?
Growth bands in the studied individual’s vertebrae indicate that it was at least 64 years old when it died. DePaul’s account says the growth model allows a possible theoretical longevity of 96 years; that upper figure is not a known lifespan for the species.
The fossil record is sparse in part because sharks have cartilaginous skeletons, which preserve less readily than mineralized teeth. As natural history conservator Trine Sørensen explained in DePaul’s account, “The sharks’ cartilaginous skeletons make their preservation potential generally very low except for their highly mineralized teeth.”

What to take away
- About 24.3 m (80 ft) is a possible maximum proposed by a 2025 study, not a directly measured fossil length.
- The 2026 study confirmed the reported 23 cm maximum diameter of rediscovered Danish vertebrae that were important to the estimate.
- The 80-foot reconstruction depends on comparative shark proportions to infer anatomy missing from the fossils, and remains uncertain.
- The 2025 study’s estimates of about 94 tonnes in mass and 3.6–3.9 m at birth are also reconstructions, not measurements of a complete animal.
