Found a baby rabbit alone? First check whether it actually needs help. A warm, quiet, uninjured kit resting in a shallow nest may not be orphaned; keep people and pets away and leave the nest intact. If the kit is cold, weak, injured, persistently crying, was caught by a cat or dog, or its nest was destroyed and cannot safely be restored, contact a qualified professional promptly. For a wild rabbit, start with a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or your state wildlife agency. For a domestic rabbit, call a rabbit-savvy veterinarian. Call before transporting the kit, and do not feed or give water to a wild kit unless a qualified professional instructs you.
First decide whether the kit needs intervention
A mother rabbit’s absence during a brief observation does not prove abandonment. Rabbit.org advises leaving a warm, quiet, uninjured kit in its shallow nest rather than removing it simply because it is alone (Baby Bunny Basics). Keep children and pets away, avoid disturbing the nest, and observe from a distance.
Seek prompt professional guidance if the kit is cold, limp or weak, visibly injured, persistently crying, has been caught by a cat or dog, or is in a destroyed nest that cannot safely be restored. Choose the right kind of professional
For a wild rabbit
Start with a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or your state wildlife agency. Rabbit.org also suggests checking the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association directory and local humane societies as routes to a referral; confirm that a listing is current and that the person or organization accepts rabbit kits (Feeding & Caring For Orphans).

A veterinary clinic may be able to assess or stabilize a wild rabbit, but do not assume it will accept wildlife. Some veterinarians coordinate with licensed wildlife groups; others do not treat wildlife. Clinic policies differ, so call ahead (Helping an Injured Rabbit).
For a domestic rabbit
Contact a veterinarian experienced with rabbits. If the situation is urgent or it is after hours, call an emergency clinic and ask explicitly whether it treats rabbits and can handle the specific problem. A clinic that sees pet rabbits is not necessarily equipped or authorized to take in a wild kit.

What to ask when you call
Explain whether the rabbit is wild or domestic, what you observed, and why you think help may be needed. Before setting out, confirm these practical details:
- Does the service accept rabbit kits and, if applicable, wild rabbits?
- Is it licensed or able to refer you to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator?
- Is someone available now, including after hours if relevant?
- Where should you go, and what transport instructions should you follow?
Acceptance, hours, and local coverage vary; a directory listing alone does not establish that a service can take this case. If no one answers, try your state wildlife agency, a humane society, or an emergency veterinarian, confirming directly that the service can help. Keep the kit safe while arranging help
- Do not feed or give water to an injured or orphaned wild rabbit unless a qualified rehabilitator instructs you. Roanoke Wildlife Rescue specifically cautions against giving food, water, milk, or formula without that direction (Baby Rabbit: What To Do If You Find One).
- Do not try to raise a wild rabbit at home. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service warns that raising a wild animal in captivity is illegal without a state permit. Permit processes and applicable rules vary, so ask your state wildlife agency about local requirements (I Found a Baby Rabbit).
- Follow the professional’s instructions about whether and how to transport the rabbit; call before moving it unless immediate safety requires otherwise.
