If a bear comes near your car, stay inside and do not approach it or get out to take a photo. If you are in Yellowstone National Park and a bear approaches or touches your car, the park says to honk your horn and drive away. In other parks, follow that park’s current instructions: bear recommendations vary by location.
What should I do if a bear approaches my car?
- Stay inside. Keep the doors closed and do not get out to get closer, feed the bear, or take a close-up photo. Great Smoky Mountains National Park advises visitors viewing a bear from a vehicle to remain inside; Yellowstone describes a car as a safe place.
- Follow the local park’s instructions. In Yellowstone, the instruction is explicit: “If a bear approaches or touches your car, honk your horn and drive away.” This is Yellowstone National Park’s advice, not a universal rule for every park or jurisdiction.
- Move on safely when you can. Do not stop in a way that blocks traffic or encourages other drivers to gather. Use a designated pull-off only when safe and get completely off the roadway.
- Report concerning behavior when appropriate. If the bear touches or damages your vehicle, or you otherwise need to report an incident, use the local park’s contact information. There is no single reporting number established for all parks.
Why the advice depends on where you are
The National Park Service says bear recommendations vary from park to park because local bear behavior differs. Yellowstone’s horn-and-drive-away instruction applies to its own guidance. Great Smoky Mountains National Park emphasizes staying inside, moving on quickly, and not impeding traffic. Check the current guidance for the park you are visiting and follow ranger or staff directions.
How to watch a bear without creating a traffic hazard
If a bear is visible from your vehicle but is not approaching it, remain inside and keep the encounter brief. Great Smoky Mountains National Park advises visitors not to create a “bear jam” and to move on quickly. Its visitor notice, last updated September 14, 2026, says to view wildlife from designated pull-offs, ensure the vehicle is completely off the roadway without obstructing traffic, and follow staff directions. Do not stop in a travel lane or ignore a closure to get a better view.
How to prevent a bear from getting into your parked car
Before leaving a vehicle unattended in bear country, lock it and secure food and trash. Great Smoky Mountains National Park warns that bears can open car doors; keeping attractants inaccessible helps prevent a bear from entering a parked vehicle. This is prevention, separate from what to do when a bear is outside your car.

Is bear spray part of the car response?
Bear spray is not a substitute for staying inside and following park instructions during a vehicle encounter. The NPS describes bear pepper spray as a defensive tool designed to stop aggressive bears, not as a repellent. For activities away from the car in bear country, check whether the park recommends or allows it for your planned activity.
What is known about bear injury risk?
The National Park Service’s 2025 Yellowstone National Park wildlife chapter says that, on average, bears injure one person each year within Yellowstone National Park. That figure is specific to Yellowstone; it is not a national average or an estimate for other parks.
