Friskies offers wet and dry cat foods, treats, and meal complements, but the brand is not one uniform recipe. Whether a particular Friskies food suits your cat depends on its nutritional adequacy statement, intended life stage, calories, and feeding directions. Purina’s product information can establish what the manufacturer claims and what its labels state; it does not provide an independent comparison of health outcomes or proof that every cat will thrive on every formula.
Is Friskies good for cats?
A specific Friskies food may be a suitable complete diet when its label says it is complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage and it fits the cat’s individual needs. That answer cannot be applied to every product bearing the Friskies name: the range includes different recipes and formats, and at least one product Purina describes, Lil’ Shakes, is for intermittent or supplemental feeding only. Check the exact package rather than assuming a treat, complement, or every recipe is a complete meal. Purina’s FAQ says its wet and dry recipes provide complete and balanced nutrition, while its product labels specify the intended life stage. The manufacturer’s statement is not an independent evaluation.
For an example of why the label matters, Purina’s Tender & Crunchy Combo label says the food is formulated to meet AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for adult maintenance. Purina’s Seafood Sensations dry food, by contrast, is labeled for all life stages. These examples apply to those particular recipes, not the entire range.

Wet food and variety packs
Purina’s Friskies Paté Wet Cat Food 48-count variety pack contains 12 cans each of Salmon Dinner, Ocean Whitefish & Tuna Dinner, Mixed Grill, and Turkey & Giblets Dinner. Purina describes this pack as complete and balanced nutrition for adult cats. Confirm the statement on the current package if you are evaluating a different product or package. Treats and meal complements
The broader Friskies catalog also includes treats and meal complements. These do not necessarily replace a complete diet. For example, Purina says Lil’ Shakes are intended for intermittent or supplemental feeding only, so they should not be treated as a complete meal.

How to assess a Friskies label
- Look for nutritional adequacy and life stage. Find the package statement identifying whether the food is complete and balanced and whether it is intended for growth, adult maintenance, or all life stages. Do not infer this from another Friskies recipe.
- Read the ingredient list for the specific recipe. The Tender & Crunchy Combo label lists ground yellow corn, corn protein meal, chicken by-product meal, ground wheat, and soybean meal among its ingredients. An ingredient list alone does not establish the finished food’s nutritional adequacy or predict how an individual cat will do on it.
- Compare calories on the same basis. Purina says calorie content varies by formula and directs readers to product labels. Use the value for the exact recipe and serving, not a brand-wide estimate.
- Use the package’s feeding directions as a starting point. Directions depend on the formula and package, and a cat’s needs can differ. Account for the rest of the cat’s diet and adjust portions to maintain ideal body condition.
How many calories are in a can of Friskies?
There is no single calorie count for all Friskies cans; it varies by recipe. As one label-specific example, Nestlé Purina PetCare Company’s 2025 label for Fully Load’d With Salmon, Wild Rice, Carrots & Spinach in Sauce lists 146 kcal per can. That figure applies only to that recipe and label. Check the label for its calorie and feeding information.
How much Friskies wet food should you feed?
Follow the directions for the exact product, then account for your cat’s body condition, activity, life stage, and any other food or treats. For the Fully Load’d Salmon recipe above, the label recommends 3/4 to 1 ounce per pound of body weight daily, split into two or more meals, with adjustment to maintain ideal body condition. This is the manufacturer’s starting guidance for that recipe, not a universal Friskies portion or individualized veterinary advice.

Dry-food directions differ. The cited Tender & Crunchy Combo label gives average portions by cat weight, notes that needs may differ, and uses an 8-ounce measuring cup. Use the current package’s chart rather than transferring amounts from one formula to another. Ask your veterinarian for help with an individualized feeding plan, particularly if your cat has a medical condition or needs to change weight.
Who makes Friskies, and where is it made?
Purina identifies Nestlé Purina as the Friskies brand owner. Its FAQ says Friskies foods and treats are made primarily in the United States and Thailand. That range-wide description does not establish the manufacturing country for every individual product or package. Purina’s FAQ provides its current brand information.

What about recalls?
Purina’s FAQ currently says there is no Friskies recall. Recall status can change, so check official recall information close to the time you are making a decision; a current FAQ statement is not a guarantee about future status.
What this review can—and cannot—establish
The available product evidence is primarily from Purina: its catalog, FAQs, and package labels. Those sources are useful for checking the manufacturer’s product descriptions, ingredients, intended life stage, calories, and directions. They do not establish independent comparative performance, veterinary consensus, or how an individual cat will respond. Purina also publishes its own perspective on whether Friskies is a good cat food; treat it as a manufacturer source rather than an independent assessment.

When comparing two Friskies recipes, compare their format, nutritional adequacy statement and life stage, ingredients and guaranteed analysis, calories per can or serving, feeding directions, package size, and whether the product is a complete diet or a supplement. These details can differ even within the same brand.
