Fromm is a legitimate U.S. pet-food manufacturer with a wider range than many older reviews suggest. It makes grain-inclusive and grain-free dry foods, canned recipes, gently cooked frozen foods, treats, and targeted diets. The company owns its production facilities in Wisconsin and publishes recipe-level ingredient, calorie, and nutritional-adequacy information.

That does not make every Fromm recipe equally suitable for every dog. Calories, fat, ingredients, life-stage claims, and the use of legumes vary significantly between formulas. Fromm also has a documented recall history, so claims that it has “never had a recall” are outdated.

Our verdict: Fromm is a reasonable brand to consider, particularly if you want several life-stage and recipe options from a company that manufactures its own foods. But the right decision depends on the individual formula—not the Fromm name alone.

Where Fromm food is made

Fromm says it owns and operates two dry-food and treat plants in Mequon and Columbus, Wisconsin; a frozen-food facility in Columbus; and a wet-food cannery in Eden. The company says every bag and can of Fromm dog and cat food originates from one of those facilities. See Fromm’s manufacturing information.

It also describes controls covering supplier approval, ingredient testing, laboratory analysis, traceability, sanitation, processing, packaging, warehousing, and distribution. Fromm states that it does not source ingredients from China; see its ingredient-sourcing FAQ.

There is an important distinction here: “made in Wisconsin” refers to the manufacturing location, not necessarily the country of origin of every agricultural ingredient. Fromm’s sourcing statement should not be rewritten as proof that every ingredient is grown or produced in the United States.

Who formulates Fromm recipes?

Fromm says its diets are developed by owner Tom Nieman and its research-and-development team, which includes Ph.D. animal nutritionist Dr. Danielle Opetz. That is different from saying that every recipe was formulated or individually reviewed by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist. There is not enough information here to make that stronger claim. See Fromm’s nutritionist FAQ.

Representative dry-food nutrition

“Fromm dog food” is not one nutritional product. The following examples show how much the recipes differ; calorie and adequacy details are published on the linked Classic Adult, Adult Gold, Pork & Peas, Lamb & Lentil, and Digestive Support Low Fat product pages.

Recipe Protein Fat Calories Label adequacy
Classic Adult 23% min. 15% min. 409 kcal/cup Growth and maintenance, including large-breed growth
Adult Gold 25% min. 16% min. 418 kcal/cup Growth and maintenance, including large-breed growth
Four-Star Pork & Peas 29% min. 17% min. 392 kcal/cup All life stages, including large-breed growth
Four-Star Lamb & Lentil 29% min. 18% min. 398 kcal/cup All life stages, including large-breed growth
Digestive Support Low Fat 24% min. 7% min.; 9% max. 329 kcal/cup Adult maintenance

These are guaranteed-analysis figures, not exact nutrient measurements. Guaranteed analysis gives minimums or maximums. Fromm separately publishes “Typical Analysis” information based on laboratory analysis, which can be more useful when comparing recipes. See Fromm’s explanation of guaranteed analysis.

The practical point is that Adult Gold and Four-Star Lamb & Lentil are relatively calorie-dense, while Digestive Support Low Fat is deliberately lower in fat and calories. Feeding amounts should be adjusted to your dog’s weight, activity, body condition, and response—not copied blindly from another Fromm formula.

Ingredients: what looks good and what needs context

Ingredient lists are ordered by weight as formulated. That is useful, but it does not tell you the complete nutritional story. Cooking changes ingredient weight, and ingredient order alone cannot show the final protein quality, digestibility, or nutrient balance. See AAFCO’s labeling guidance.

For example, the current Four-Star Pork & Peas recipe lists peas second, followed by pork broth, chickpeas, pork meat-and-bone meal, pea flour, and sweet potatoes. Owners who want to limit pulses or potatoes should treat that as a significant feature of the recipe, rather than focusing only on the first named meat. See the recipe ingredient panel.

Some common online ingredient claims are too simplistic:

  • A named meat first does not automatically mean the food contains a high percentage of meat after cooking.
  • Meat meal is not automatically a filler; concentrated meals can supply valuable protein and minerals.
  • Byproducts are not inherently inferior. Their value depends on what they are, how they are processed, and how the complete diet is formulated.
  • Peas, lentils, and potatoes are not automatically toxic.
  • “Natural flavors” are not necessarily artificial chemicals. Fromm says its natural flavors are concentrated flavor enhancers derived from protein breakdown, but owners of allergic dogs should identify the source protein before feeding them. See Fromm’s natural-flavors FAQ.

Grain-inclusive and grain-free Fromm food

Fromm sells both types. Classic and Gold include grain-containing recipes, while Four-Star includes several grain-free options. Grain-free recipes commonly use peas, lentils, chickpeas, potatoes, sweet potatoes, pea flour, or pea protein.

Fromm says its grain-free foods are produced on equipment that also processes grain-containing foods. Trace amounts of grain may therefore be present. That matters if your dog has a diagnosed allergy or severe sensitivity requiring strict avoidance. See Fromm’s grain-free FAQ.

The grain-free question also needs careful wording. The FDA investigated reports of canine dilated cardiomyopathy associated with diets—many labeled grain-free—that contained peas, lentils, other pulses, and/or potatoes among their main ingredients. The FDA later stated that it did not have enough data to establish a causal relationship between those diets and non-hereditary DCM. The agency also reported cases involving both grain-free and grain-containing diets. See the FDA investigation and its DCM update.

So neither of these statements is justified:

  • “Fromm causes heart disease.”
  • “All grain-free food is dangerous.”

Nor is grain-free automatically the best choice for a dog with food allergies. Dogs can react to animal proteins, and Fromm’s grain-free products may contain several protein sources as well as possible trace grain. A suspected food allergy is best investigated with a veterinarian-directed elimination diet.

Fromm Nutritionals and specialty products

The Nutritionals range includes targeted products rather than just standard maintenance foods. Digestive Support Low Fat Chicken & Oatmeal, for example, is labeled for adult maintenance and provides 7% minimum and 9% maximum fat. It includes hydrolyzed proteins and a fiber blend containing dried beet pulp, pumpkin, ground miscanthus grass, and dried chicory root. See the product page.

That may make it a more logical option than a high-fat recipe for some dogs with dietary fat restrictions, but it is not a substitute for veterinary treatment. A dog with chronic vomiting, diarrhea, pancreatitis, weight loss, or suspected intestinal disease needs a diagnosis—not simply a different bag of food.

Bonnihill Farms provides gently cooked frozen foods. Its BeefiBowls Beef Recipe contains beef, carrots, potatoes, peas, beef liver, and other ingredients and is labeled complete and balanced for all life stages, including growth of large-size dogs. See the BeefiBowls product page.

Rank #2
Fromm Large Breed Adult Gold Premium Dry Dog Food - Dry Adult Dog Food for Large Breeds - Chicken Recipe - 30 lb
  • LARGE BREED DOG FOOD - Chicken recipe dry dog food for breeds with adult weights exceeding 50 pounds. Formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for growth and maintenance.
  • FAMILY OWNED & OPERATED - Fromm Family Foods is a fifth-generation family-owned-and-operated pet food company based in Wisconsin. Since 1904, our family has maintained a tradition of quiet innovation dedicated to the health and nutrition of animals.
  • HIGH-QUALITY PROTEIN - Our dog kibble has chicken, duck, and lamb. Very digestible and highly palatable sources of protein that provide amino acids required for maintaining muscle, tissue repair, hormone synthesis, and other metabolic processes.
  • WHOLE GRAIN GOODNESS - Our dry food for dogs contains a mix of whole grains that provide an impressive variety of vitamins, minerals, and high-quality complex carbohydrates, which can provide energy and fiber.
  • EASY FEEDING - This 30 lb bag of adult dog food is great for large and giant breeds. Fromm is dedicated to providing exceptional foods to pet families everywhere. We would love to assist with your pet’s nutritional needs.

Pay attention to the label on wet and supplemental products. Fromm’s Digestive Dog Food Supplement Pâté is labeled “for intermittent or supplemental feeding only.” It should not replace a complete diet. See the product page.

AAFCO wording: what it actually means

Fromm product pages generally say that a recipe is “formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles” for a particular life stage.

That means the manufacturer claims the recipe meets the relevant nutrient profile. It does not mean AAFCO tested, certified, or approved the product. AAFCO explains that nutritional adequacy can be supported by formulation against its nutrient profiles or by feeding trials conducted under AAFCO procedures. See AAFCO’s label guidance.

When comparing foods, distinguish among:

  • Formulated to meet AAFCO nutrient profiles: a formulation-based claim.
  • Animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate: a feeding-trial claim.
  • Complete and balanced: the food is intended to provide all required nutrients for the stated life stage when fed as directed.
  • AAFCO-approved: not an accurate description of ordinary commercial pet-food labeling.

Fromm recall history

The FDA’s 2025 recall notice and 2021 recall notice describe two publicly listed dog-food safety alerts:

December 2025: Bonnihill Farms BeefiBowls

  • Product: Bonnihill Farms BeefiBowls Beef Recipe
  • Size: 16-ounce chub
  • UPC: 072705135004
  • Best By: 12/25/2026
  • Lot: B01
  • Reason: possible plastic foreign material
  • Distribution: selected U.S. states and Ontario, Canada
  • Quantity: approximately 300 cases, according to the FDA recall notice

The FDA reported no consumer reports of illness or injury when the recall was announced. Its listing says the recall was completed and terminated.

October 2021: Four-Star shredded canned Entrées

The affected products were Shredded Beef, Chicken, Pork, and Turkey in Gravy Entrées. They were sold in 12-ounce cans with a Best By date of 08/2024. The FDA recall notice says approximately 5,500 cases were involved; the reason was potentially elevated vitamin D.

The FDA reported no consumer reports of illness or injury at the time and lists the recall as completed and terminated.

These events do not prove that Fromm food is broadly unsafe. They do mean that “Fromm has never had a recall” is false. Check the lot code and Best By date of any product you have at home against the current manufacturer and FDA notices.

Advantages of Fromm

  • Broad selection: options include puppy, adult, senior, large-breed, small-breed, weight-management, low-fat, canned, frozen, grain-inclusive, and grain-free foods.
  • Company-owned manufacturing: Fromm says it controls its Wisconsin production facilities rather than outsourcing all manufacturing.
  • Useful product information: the website publishes ingredient panels, calorie statements, guaranteed analyses, and typical analyses for its recipes.
  • Life-stage labeling: many recipes clearly state whether they are intended for adult maintenance, growth, or all life stages.
  • Choice of formats: dry, canned, frozen, and supplemental products make it easier to build a feeding routine around a dog’s preferences.

Limitations to consider

  • The brand is not nutritionally uniform. A recommendation for Adult Gold should not automatically be applied to Four-Star Pork & Peas or a Nutritionals formula.
  • Some recipes are calorie-dense. Adult Gold contains 418 kcal per cup, and Lamb & Lentil contains 398 kcal per cup; see the linked product pages in the nutrition table above. Overfeeding can quietly add weight.
  • Grain-free recipes may be pulse-heavy. This is relevant when discussing the FDA’s DCM investigation or when a dog has a specific dietary restriction.
  • Grain-free does not mean free from cross-contact. Fromm acknowledges that trace grain ingredients may occur.
  • There is a documented recall history. The company should not be described as recall-free.
  • Some medical diets require professional guidance. A “digestive support” label does not diagnose or treat the cause of gastrointestinal disease.

How to choose a Fromm recipe

  1. Start with the dog, not the marketing line. Note age, adult size, activity level, body condition, allergies, medical diagnoses, and whether the dog needs weight control.
  2. Check the nutritional-adequacy statement. A puppy, pregnant dog, adult, and senior may not need the same life-stage profile. Large-breed puppy requirements deserve particular attention.
  3. Compare calories per cup or can. Two foods can have similar ingredients but produce very different daily calorie totals.
  4. Read the complete ingredient panel. Look for the protein sources, legumes, grains, fats, supplements, and natural-flavor sources—not just the first ingredient.
  5. Check cross-contact information. If strict grain avoidance is medically necessary, a grain-free label alone is not enough.
  6. Transition gradually. Mix increasing amounts of the new food with the old over roughly seven days, slowing down if stools soften or appetite drops.
  7. Monitor the dog. Track stool quality, itching, vomiting, weight, appetite, and body condition. Stop and contact your veterinarian if significant symptoms develop.

Is Fromm a good dog food?

For many healthy dogs, a suitable Fromm recipe can be a good food. The brand offers complete-and-balanced formulas across several life stages and formats, manufactures in company-owned Wisconsin facilities, and provides more recipe information than a label-only review can capture.

It is not accurate to call Fromm universally superior, AAFCO-approved, recall-free, or proven to cause or prevent diet-associated DCM. The most defensible assessment is recipe-specific. Choose a formula that matches your dog’s life stage and calorie needs, then evaluate how your dog actually maintains weight, digestion, coat, energy, and overall health on it.

FAQ

Is Fromm dog food made in the United States?

Fromm says its dog food is made in company-owned facilities in Wisconsin: dry food and treats in Mequon and Columbus, frozen food in Columbus, and canned food in Eden. “Made in Wisconsin” describes manufacturing location, not necessarily the origin of every ingredient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Has Fromm dog food ever been recalled?

Yes. FDA-listed recalls include four Four-Star shredded canned Entrées for potentially elevated vitamin D in 2021 and one Bonnihill Farms frozen beef product for possible plastic contamination in 2025. Both recalls are listed as completed and terminated. See the 2021 and 2025 FDA notices.

Is Fromm AAFCO-approved?

No. AAFCO does not approve ordinary commercial pet foods. Fromm recipes generally state that they are formulated to meet AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for a stated life stage.

Does Fromm make grain-free dog food?

Yes. Fromm sells both grain-inclusive and grain-free foods. Its grain-free recipes may contain peas, lentils, chickpeas, potatoes, sweet potatoes, pea flour, or pea protein, and the company warns that trace grain cross-contact is possible.

Is Fromm good for dogs with allergies?

It may be appropriate for some dogs, but the brand is not automatically hypoallergenic. Recipes can contain multiple animal proteins, and grain-free products may have trace grain from shared equipment. A veterinarian-directed elimination diet is the more reliable way to investigate a food allergy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which Fromm food is best for a dog with digestive problems?

Fromm’s Nutritionals Digestive Support Low Fat Chicken & Oatmeal is a targeted adult-maintenance formula with lower fat than many standard recipes. However, persistent digestive symptoms require veterinary evaluation; food alone may not address the underlying condition.

The Bottom Line

Fromm is a credible brand with substantial recipe variety and company-owned Wisconsin manufacturing, but it should be judged formula by formula. Its strongest points are the range of life-stage and specialty options, published recipe details, and both grain-inclusive and grain-free choices. Its limitations include calorie variation, pulse-heavy grain-free recipes, possible grain cross-contact, and two documented recalls. Select the specific food according to your dog’s nutritional and medical needs, and involve your veterinarian when allergies, heart disease, pancreatitis, chronic gastrointestinal symptoms, or weight problems are involved.
