Yes, some Arctic char are freshwater fish throughout their lives—but others are sea-run. Resident populations stay in freshwater, while anadromous char feed in the sea and return to freshwater to spawn and overwinter. Which pattern applies depends on the population.
Does Arctic char live in freshwater or saltwater?
Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) has more than one life-history pattern. Fisheries and Oceans Canada describes freshwater-resident char, whose entire life cycle takes place in freshwater, and anadromous char, which feed in marine waters before returning to freshwater to spawn. Anadromous fish also return to freshwater to overwinter.
| Life-history form | Where it lives and feeds | Return to freshwater |
|---|---|---|
| Freshwater-resident (potamodromous; some populations are landlocked) | Freshwater throughout its life | It does not make a seasonal trip to the sea. |
| Anadromous (sea-run) | Freshwater for part of its life; feeds in coastal marine waters seasonally | Returns to freshwater to spawn and overwinter. |
So, Arctic char are not exclusively freshwater or saltwater fish. Even sea-run char depend on freshwater for important parts of their life cycle.
Do Arctic char go to the ocean?
Some do. Fisheries and Oceans Canada says anadromous Arctic char feed in shallow nearshore waters for 4 to 8 weeks during summer before returning to freshwater. That timeframe describes the profile’s account of anadromous char; it should not be assumed to apply to every population.

- Antibiotic and hormone free with water kept consistently fresh to naturally keep fish healthy
- Plenty of space to roam–lower stocking densities allow each fish ample space

- Sustainably and ethically sourced Icelandic fish is a natural source of Omega-3 and 6 fatty acids to help support a healthy skin, coat, and immune system
- Plus non-GMO potato starch as a good source of dietary fiber and packed with vitamins like B6 and C, which help support healthy skin and joint development.
Newfoundland and Labrador’s government also describes sea-run char travelling several miles to sea to feed in summer, generally staying closer to their home rivers than salmon do. In northern populations, Polar Knowledge Canada reports that char hatch and spend several years in freshwater before feeding in the ocean, then return to freshwater before winter. The timing and details vary by population.
Where do Arctic char live entirely in freshwater?
Geography matters. Alaska’s Department of Fish and Game reports that all known Arctic char populations in northern Alaska live entirely in lakes. That is a regional finding, not a description of the species everywhere. Canadian sources describe both landlocked or other freshwater-resident char and sea-run populations.

As a result, a local description of Arctic char as a freshwater fish can be correct for a particular population without applying to every Arctic char. The species includes both resident and sea-run forms.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to describe Arctic char accurately
- For a fish that stays in freshwater throughout its life, say “freshwater-resident” or “landlocked” Arctic char.
- For one that feeds at sea and returns to freshwater, say “anadromous” or “sea-run” Arctic char.
- When referring to the species as a whole, note that both life-history forms exist and that their distribution varies geographically.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada summarizes the distinction this way: “Arctic Char can be anadromous (feeds in marine waters and spawns in freshwater) or potamodromous (entire lifecycle in freshwater).” See its Arctic char species profile for the Canadian overview.
