The horseshoe crab is a living marine animal whose lineage stretches back roughly 445–450 million years—about 200 million years before dinosaurs appeared. It is not a true crab, and no individual lives for millions of years: the phrase “living fossil” describes the animal’s ancient lineage and broadly conserved body plan.
Which sea creature has been around since before the dinosaurs?
It is the horseshoe crab, especially the Atlantic horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus). NOAA describes horseshoe crabs as “living fossils” with a lineage more closely related to spiders and scorpions than to crabs. The National Park Service says they have been on Earth for more than 450 million years, roughly 200 million years longer than dinosaurs.
Different institutions give slightly different age estimates: the Smithsonian’s National Zoo profile says approximately 450 million years, while Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says at least 445 million. These figures refer to the lineage’s fossil record, not the age of any living animal. Are horseshoe crabs actually crabs?
No. Despite the name, horseshoe crabs are marine arthropods, not true crabs. They belong to a different branch of the animal tree and are more closely related to spiders and scorpions. Their broad, curved shell gives them their common name; the long, pointed tail is called a telson.

There are four living horseshoe-crab species. The Atlantic horseshoe crab is the species native to the eastern coast of North America. Smithsonian’s National Zoo reports that it can reach up to 2 feet (60 centimeters) long, including its tail.
Why are they called “living fossils”?
Horseshoe crabs have a long fossil record and a body plan that has remained broadly recognizable over immense spans of geological time. “Living fossil” is a popular shorthand for that persistence—not a scientific claim that modern horseshoe crabs are literally unchanged. Species and anatomical details have evolved, and modern animals are not the same individuals or exact replicas of ancient fossils.

The lifespan of an individual is measured in decades, not geological ages. Smithsonian’s National Zoo says horseshoe crabs take about 10 years to reach adulthood and may live 20 years or more in the wild.
What role do horseshoe crabs play on the coast?
Adults spawn on beaches, where their eggs become an important seasonal food source. Migratory shorebirds, including red knots, feed on them during migration; loggerhead sea turtles and numerous fish and crab species also benefit. NOAA says more than 20 species of migratory birds, along with loggerhead sea turtles and commercial and recreational fish and crab species, rely on horseshoe-crab eggs.

This makes the health of horseshoe-crab populations relevant well beyond the animals themselves: their spawning beaches and eggs support coastal food webs.
What is horseshoe-crab blood used for?
Horseshoe-crab blood contains substances used to make lysate for testing vaccines and drugs for bacterial contamination. This biomedical use creates a conservation tension: animals are collected and bled, then returned, but biomedical harvest is one of the pressures identified alongside bait harvest and coastal habitat loss.

The ecological value of their eggs and the use of their blood for safety testing are both reasons that population management matters. The balance depends on harvest practices and local rules; the cited sources do not establish one universal policy for all regions.

Their conservation status and harvest rules vary by place, so “endangered” is not a single worldwide answer. Smithsonian Ocean reports that the American horseshoe crab’s status changed from near threatened to vulnerable in 2016. Threats include loss of spawning habitat, shoreline development, sea-level rise, bait collection and biomedical bleeding.
