How Are Jellyfish Alive? How Their Simple Bodies Breathe, Eat and Move

Jellyfish survive without human-style organs: oxygen diffuses through their tissues, a one-opening cavity digests food, and a nerve net coordinates movement and sensing.

Jellyfish are alive because their tissues perform the essential jobs of an animal without human-style organs. Oxygen and dissolved nutrients cross their thin body surfaces, a central digestive cavity processes food, and a distributed nerve net senses the environment and coordinates movement. They are animals in the phylum Cnidaria—not fish—even though many drift through the sea.

A jellyfish body is simple, not nonfunctional

Jellyfish are built from tissue layers arranged around a central axis. NOAA describes an outer epidermis, a middle jelly-like layer called the mesoglea, and an inner gastrodermis. About 95 percent of a jellyfish’s body is water, according to the NOAA National Ocean Service page last updated September 23, 2026. The remaining material includes living cells and structural components, so a jellyfish is not merely a bag of water.

This design works because a jellyfish is relatively thin and has no demanding internal system that must transport oxygen or nutrients over long distances. Water is continually in contact with much of its body, allowing substances to move directly through tissues.

How do jellyfish breathe without lungs?

Jellyfish do not inhale air and have no lungs, gills or blood-based circulation. Oxygen dissolved in seawater passes across the body surface and moves into cells by diffusion. Carbon dioxide moves back out into the surrounding water.

  • COMPACT DESIGN: Perfect for desktops and countertops with its sleek 10L size, adding a mesmerizing touch of marine elegance to any home or office space.

The same basic arrangement helps distribute some dissolved nutrients. Because jellyfish tissues are thin and their bodies lack large internal distances, diffusion can support their metabolism. This is not breathing in the human sense: there is no separate respiratory organ, breathing muscle or bloodstream carrying oxygen around the body.

How do jellyfish digest food without intestines?

Jellyfish use a gastrovascular cavity, a central chamber that combines the functions of a stomach and intestine. It has a single opening. Food enters through that opening, digestion occurs in the cavity and tissues, and undigested material leaves through the same opening.

Capturing prey

Tentacles carry specialized stinging cells that help immobilize prey. Depending on the species, a jellyfish may eat small planktonic animals and other organisms. The tentacles and surrounding structures move captured food toward the mouth, which opens into the digestive cavity.

Why one opening is enough

A jellyfish does not need a separate mouth and anus for its relatively simple digestive plan. The cavity distributes digested material to nearby tissues, while the body’s thinness lets additional exchange occur directly across surfaces.

How do jellyfish move without a brain?

Jellyfish have no centralized brain, but they do have a nervous system. A nerve net spread through the body detects stimuli and coordinates contractions. NOAA says this elementary network allows jellyfish to detect light, smell and respond to other environmental signals.

Bell pulsing and paddling

Many jellyfish contract and relax their bell, pushing water away and moving the animal. Larger jellies are often described as paddling with the bell. Some species use more jet-like movement or other body contractions.

Currents do much of the transporting

Most jellyfish are not powerful long-distance swimmers. Ocean currents and local water movement carry many of them, while bell pulses provide control, lift and short-range movement. The balance between active swimming and drifting differs among species and habitats.

How do jellyfish sense the world?

The nerve net responds to changes in light, touch and other conditions without a central command center. Some jellies have specialized sensory structures, including statocysts that help detect orientation and ocelli that detect light. Box jellies have more elaborate eyes than many other jellyfish groups.

These structures are not universal. A jellyfish can coordinate useful behavior with a distributed network, but its sensory equipment depends on its evolutionary group.

What is a jellyfish life cycle?

Many jellyfish species alternate between two principal forms: a free-swimming medusa and an attached polyp. Their exact sequence and reproductive details vary across groups.

  1. Medusa: The familiar swimming or drifting jellyfish releases eggs and sperm.
  2. Larva: After fertilization, the developing animal becomes a free-swimming larva.
  3. Polyp: The larva can settle on a hard surface such as rock and attach as a polyp.
  4. Young medusae: The polyp may reproduce asexually and bud off young free-swimming jellyfish.

This alternation lets one stage disperse through the water while another remains attached and can produce new individuals. Not every jellyfish lineage follows an identical version of this pattern.

How long do jellyfish live?

Lifespan is species-dependent. The Natural History Museum says most jellyfish live only a few weeks, while some live a year or longer. Those are broad descriptions, not a single lifespan that applies to every species.

The phrase “immortal jellyfish” refers to a special case often discussed in popular science, not to jellyfish generally. It should not be used as a blanket claim that jellyfish do not age or die.

Which jobs does each part perform?

Jellyfish feature Primary job What it does not have
Body surface and thin tissues Exchange oxygen, carbon dioxide and some dissolved nutrients with seawater Lungs, gills and blood circulation
Gastrovascular cavity Digests food and distributes products to nearby tissues A separate stomach, intestine, mouth and anus
Tentacles and stinging cells Capture and immobilize prey Jaws or chewing teeth
Bell and body muscles Pulse, paddle or propel the animal Bones and limbs
Nerve net and sensory structures Detect cues and coordinate responses A centralized brain

The central idea

Jellyfish are alive because life does not require a heart, lungs or brain modeled on ours. Their tissues exchange gases directly, their one-opening cavity digests food, their tentacles capture prey, and their nerve net coordinates movement and responses. That compact arrangement is enough for a successful animal whose life may include both drifting medusae and attached polyps.
