Many burrowing species retreat underground and become inactive for weeks or months, while others stay in permanent water and continue moving or feeding. Species, temperature, water depth, oxygen, and habitat determine what a crayfish does during cold weather.
How crayfish spend winter
Winter behavior falls along a spectrum rather than into a single pattern. A crayfish may shelter in a burrow, remain on the bottom of a pond or stream, forage during warmer periods, or combine these behaviors as conditions change.
Cold generally reduces activity, growth, and molting. Virginia Cooperative Extension describes growth and molting as slowing or stopping in winter, but that is a seasonal tendency, not an absolute rule for every species or waterbody.
Burrowing crayfish retreat underground
The University of Kentucky groups crayfish by their dependence on burrows: primary, secondary, and tertiary burrowers. Primary burrowers spend much of their lives in self-made burrows and may seal the opening during cold or dry periods. They can remain inactive for weeks or months, emerging when wet, mild conditions make foraging or mating worthwhile.

Burrows provide shelter from temperature swings, drying, predators, and unsuitable surface conditions. In some species, the same underground refuge is associated with reproduction as well as winter survival. Missouri’s account of the white river crawfish says adults apparently pair in fall, then enter burrows where mating and overwintering occur.
Some crayfish remain active in open water
Not every crayfish disappears in winter. A 2024 conference study followed 80 adult noble crayfish—40 females and 40 males—in a 525-square-meter pond from December through March. The animals moved regularly; activity increased at night and at higher temperatures and decreased in deeper water. Their mean minimum distance moved was 0.4 ± 0.5 meters per day.

Those results describe one noble-crayfish population in one pond, not a universal winter average. They do show why seeing little surface activity does not prove that all crayfish are dormant: individuals can remain mobile when local conditions permit.

What controls winter activity?
Temperature
Warmer spells can trigger movement or foraging, particularly at night in the noble-crayfish study. Sustained cold generally lowers activity, but the temperature at which behavior changes differs by species and should not be generalized from one profile.

Water depth
Depth can alter both temperature and movement. In the noble-crayfish pond, activity decreased in deeper water. Other species may use depth as refuge from rapid surface changes, so the effect is habitat-specific.
Oxygen and water quality
Oxygen availability can limit where crayfish survive winter. Rusty crayfish need clear, well-oxygenated water throughout the year. A species with those requirements faces a different winter problem from a burrowing species that can retreat into saturated soil.

Access to shelter
Crayfish in ponds, streams, wetlands, or seasonally wet ground have different options. Burrowers can avoid harsh surface conditions; crayfish tied to permanent open water must cope with the conditions in that waterbody.

Some do. The U.S. Geological Survey’s red swamp crayfish profile lists fish among the adult diet in winter. Feeding is likely to be intermittent and depends on temperature, prey, oxygen, and the animal’s species and habitat. A crayfish hidden in a sealed burrow may not forage for long periods, while one remaining active in open water may continue to feed.

Are crayfish hibernating?
“Hibernation” is too broad for crayfish as a group. Many burrowing crayfish enter a prolonged period of low activity inside plugged burrows, which resembles dormancy. Other crayfish remain active enough to move and feed during winter, especially during milder conditions. The accurate description is seasonal reduction or change in activity, with the exact pattern determined by species and local habitat.
What winter looks like in the field
- A burrow entrance may be sealed, and no crayfish may be visible for weeks.
- Open-water crayfish may move mostly at night or during warmer weather.
- Surface sightings can fall even when animals remain alive below the substrate or in deeper water.
- Slow growth and fewer molts are expected seasonal patterns.
Without a species and location, the safest conclusion is that winter behavior is variable: burrowing and inactivity are common strategies, but continued movement and feeding also occur.
