There is no single size range for fish in Lake Michigan: size varies by species, and record catches are much larger than ordinary fish. Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says adult lake trout average 9–10 pounds, while its records include a 47.86-pound Lake Michigan Chinook salmon. That salmon was an exceptional catch, not a typical size.
Typical fish sizes depend on the species
Lake trout offer one useful example of the difference between an average adult and an unusually large fish. The Michigan DNR says an adult lake trout averages 9–10 pounds, though some individuals reach 50 pounds. The agency does not describe those figures as a size range for all Lake Michigan fish. Michigan DNR: Lake trout
For walleye, the DNR says the average fish caught by anglers is five years old and weighs one to three pounds. That is a general Michigan angler-catch figure, not a Lake Michigan-specific average. Michigan DNR: Walleye
How large are documented Lake Michigan catches?
Michigan’s state-record table identifies these exceptional fish as caught in Lake Michigan. The records were caught in different years, so they should not be read as a comparison of typical fish sizes.

| Atlantic salmon | 32.62 pounds; 41 inches | 1981 |

What is the biggest fish in Lake Michigan?
There is no single answer without specifying the species and whether “biggest” means a typical fish or a documented catch. Among the Lake Michigan catches listed in Michigan’s record table, the Chinook salmon is the heaviest example above: 47.86 pounds and 47.5 inches, caught in 2021. That does not establish it as the lake’s biggest fish across every species or every possible record.

Check the water-body entry before treating a Michigan state species record as a Lake Michigan catch. For example, the state’s 61-pound, 8-ounce lake-trout record came from Lake Superior, and its 17.19-pound, 35-inch walleye record came from the Pine River—not Lake Michigan. Lake trout primarily eat other fish and favor cold water. In summer, they may follow cold water to depths of 100–200 feet or deeper. Michigan DNR describes trolling with spoons, flashers and flies, or cowbells and minnows, often near the bottom. These details help explain why fishing conditions and location matter; they do not change the distinction between an average size and a record catch. Michigan DNR: Lake trout
