Shoaling and schooling can protect fish, but they are not an automatic advantage. A group can increase competition for food, expose fish to predators that can capture many at once, and create other risks when conditions such as low oxygen or high parasite pressure matter. Whether grouping helps depends on the species, group composition, environment, predators and fishing methods.
First, what is the difference between shoaling and schooling?
Shoaling means fish gather socially. Schooling usually describes a shoal whose members coordinate their movement. Scientific writing sometimes uses the terms together, so the key issue here is the costs and benefits of group living, not a rigid distinction between labels.
How can a group make feeding harder?
Fish in a group draw on shared resources. When food is scarce or concentrated in limited patches, more fish competing in the same area can mean fewer feeding opportunities for each individual. That can offset some of the protection group living may offer against predators.
A review by Hoare and colleagues highlights that the balance depends on shoal size and membership, and may also vary with fish body length. Groups made up of similarly sized fish could reduce some competition between size classes, so the number of fish alone does not determine the outcome. Hoare et al., “Body size and shoaling in fish” (2000).

A 2017 synthesis, data analysis and simple model proposed that large, self-organized schools may become more common at high population density, when individual foraging success can decline. The paper also proposed possible increases in predatory and disease mortality. These are proposed density-dependent mechanisms, not a rule established for every species or situation. “Can schooling regulate marine populations and ecosystems?” (2017).
Can schooling make fish easier for predators to attack?
Sometimes—but it depends on the predator and how it hunts. Grouping can reduce an individual fish’s risk, yet a large, conspicuous group may be easier to detect. Benefits such as dilution or confusion may also be less useful against a predator capable of capturing many fish in one strike or sweep. A predator taking only a few fish at a time presents a different risk from one that can catch much of a school at once.

So, schooling does not simply attract predators or guarantee safety. The relevant question is whether the group’s protection works against the particular predator’s attack pattern. Sbragaglia et al. (2021) discuss how collective behavior and fishing-related pressures can alter the costs and benefits of shoaling; a 2017 schooling synthesis also considers increased attack rates on large groups as a possible cost.
Can groups increase parasite or disease risk?
Close association may expose fish to greater parasite burdens, and the 2017 density-dependent model proposes that disease mortality could rise in very large groups. These sources identify plausible risks; they do not establish one measured disease effect that applies across fish species. The actual risk depends on the fish and conditions.

- INTERNAL POWER FILTER: Tetra Whisper Internal Power Filter for 5- to 10-gallon aquariums uses medium Whisper BioBag filter cartridges that are easy to change.
- QUIET 85 GPH MOTOR: The internal pump efficiently filters up to 85 gallons per hour.
- POWERFUL FILTRATION: Water flows through the cartridge floss, trapping debris and fish waste, while Ultra-activated carbon helps remove odor and discoloration.
- SPACE-SAVING DESIGN: Your aquarium can be 1” from the wall with the internal filter designed to clip directly on your aquarium wall and be hidden by décor.
- EASILY ADJUSTABLE: Adjustable clip allows for a variety of setups to easily adjust to high or low water levels.
Can oxygen conditions make schooling costly?
Oxygen availability can change the balance. A study of hypoxia and schooling discusses the possibility that a fish may encounter low-oxygen water produced by swimming neighbors ahead. This could matter where oxygen is already limiting, and may make position within a group relevant. It is a possible environmental cost—not evidence that schools generally create hypoxia. The 2017 schooling synthesis discusses this possibility alongside other potential costs.
Does schooling make fish easier to catch?
It can make a group vulnerable to fishing gear designed to enclose or capture many fish at once. A 2020 evolutionary model examined how targeting whole schools could select against preferences for larger groups. Its result is a modeled possible consequence, not proof that fished species have broadly evolved away from schooling. Individual preferences, the preferences of other fish and the way groups split and re-form can all affect observed group size. “Fisheries-induced selection against schooling behaviour in marine fishes” (2020).

- Powerful Pump: 300 GPH water pump effectively filters 55-150 gallons; ideal for large aquariums, turtle tanks, and ponds.
- Enhanced Aeration: Equipped with an adjustable valve to increase oxygen levels, promoting healthier, more active fish and turtles.
- Double Deep Filtration: Dual-stage black biochemical sponge removes odors and impurities; keeps water clear and fresh.
- Dynamic Water Flow: Boosts wave size and surface movement; improves circulation for a healthier aquatic environment.
- Adjustable Body: The aquarium filter features a detachable design. For tanks under 15 inches tall, you can lay the filter flat or remove the lower half of the filter sponge for a better fit.
A 2021 review describes fishing-related changes in shoaling behavior as rarely considered and poorly understood. That is why a potential evolutionary pressure should not be presented as an established change across all exploited fish. Sbragaglia et al., “Fisheries-induced changes of shoaling behaviour: mechanisms and potential consequences” (2021).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What determines whether grouping helps or backfires?
- Species and life stage: social behavior and vulnerability differ among fish.
- Group size and composition: both the count and relative body sizes of members can affect competition and protection.
- Food: abundance and patchiness influence how much group members compete.
- Oxygen: low-oxygen conditions can make environmental exposure and position within a group more consequential.
- Predators: the benefit depends partly on whether a predator takes a few individuals or can capture many together.
- Fishing pressure and gear: methods that capture whole groups pose different risks from those targeting individuals.
Because these conditions vary, the cited evidence does not identify one universally optimal school size. Grouping is best understood as a trade-off whose outcome depends on the fish and its circumstances.
