How Fish Survive Winter Under Ice

Ice usually covers only the surface, leaving liquid water below. Fish slow their metabolism in the cold, but still need dissolved oxygen—and prolonged ice and snow can make it scarce.

Fish can survive beneath a frozen lake or pond because the ice usually forms at the surface while liquid water remains below. The ice slows heat loss, and cold temperatures reduce fish activity and metabolism, lowering how much energy and oxygen they need. They still need dissolved oxygen, however, and prolonged ice and snow cover can deplete it enough to cause winterkill.

Why a frozen surface does not usually mean a frozen lake

As a lake or pond cools in autumn, its water mixes and gradually loses heat. In many cold-climate ponds, water reaches its greatest density at about 39°F (4°C) and settles lower, while colder water remains above it. When the surface reaches its freezing point, ice forms on top. Because ice floats, it becomes a lid that slows further heat loss from the water below.

This is a common winter pattern, not a guarantee that every waterbody stays liquid. Depth, climate, exposure, and other local conditions affect how much water remains unfrozen; a very shallow or unusually exposed pond may be more vulnerable. The 39°F layering description is useful for ponds, but should not be treated as a temperature profile shared by every lake. See the USGS explanation of temperature and water and University of Illinois Extension’s pond-specific winter overview.

How fish cope with the cold

Fish are ectothermic: their body temperature changes with the surrounding water. As water cools, many fish slow their movement, feeding, heart rate, and metabolism. That lowers their energy use and oxygen demand. NOAA describes the general pattern this way: “Most fish slow down and ‘rest’ near the bottom during cold winter months.” Resting is not universal hibernation, though. Behavior varies by species and habitat, and fish may shift location as conditions change.

Why oxygen can become a problem

Fish take oxygen from water through their gills. They do not breathe the oxygen chemically bound in water molecules. Cold water can hold more dissolved oxygen than warm water, but that extra capacity does not provide an unlimited supply under ice.

Ice restricts exchange with the atmosphere, while snow on top can block sunlight and reduce photosynthesis by aquatic plants. Fish, other aquatic organisms, and the decomposition of dead plant material continue to use oxygen. Over a long winter, oxygen levels may fall, particularly in shallow ponds or beneath extensive snow cover. Fish can move toward better-oxygenated areas, but if too little suitable water remains, they may die in a winterkill event. The USGS overview of dissolved oxygen explains how oxygen enters and behaves in water.

What pond-specific figures mean

University of Illinois Extension says fish in the pond context it discusses become stressed at dissolved oxygen of 5 parts per million (ppm). That is not a universal threshold for every species or waterbody. In a 1995 telemetry study of bluegills and black crappies in upper Mississippi backwater lakes, fish moved to areas with higher oxygen when concentrations fell below 2 mg/L. That finding describes those fish and study locations, not a general safety limit. The USGS record and abstract for the study provide the study context.

Why antifreeze is not the general answer

Fish do not all survive winter by producing antifreeze. Most freshwater fish rely on the combination of suitable liquid habitat and reduced activity and metabolism. Some species have more specialized cold adaptations: NOAA Fisheries reports that winter flounder possess an antifreeze protein. Winter flounder are a saltwater example, so that adaptation should not be used to explain the usual overwintering of fish in freshwater lakes and ponds. See NOAA Fisheries’ overview of winter flounder.

What pond owners can do—and what not to assume

Managing a private pond is different from explaining how fish persist in a natural lake. University of Illinois Extension’s guidance is specific to managed ponds: it recommends that at least 25% of a pond have an ideal depth of 8 feet or more to reduce winterkill risk, and describes 10–20% aquatic vegetation as a useful growing-season ratio for oxygen. Excessive vegetation or late-season treatment can increase winterkill risk.

The same extension guidance suggests removing persistent snow from 30% of the pond surface, if it is safe to do so, to let light reach the water. Surface aeration is another management option it discusses, helping keep an area open for air-water exchange. These are pond-management recommendations, not requirements for natural lakes; assess local conditions and follow safety guidance. Do not walk onto unsafe ice or try to aerate an unfamiliar pond. See the University of Illinois Extension article for its full pond-specific advice.
