Its forehead horn stops before the mouth, while vivid blue spines sit on bony plates at the base of its tail—two useful clues for distinguishing it from other unicornfish.
How to identify a long-nosed unicornfish
Naso unicornis is the accepted scientific name for this species. Common names vary: references also call it the blue-spine unicornfish, brown unicornfish, spotted unicornfish, or long-snouted unicornfish. Because common names can overlap among species, the scientific name is the clearest way to identify it. The World Register of Marine Species lists Naso unicornis as accepted and records Chaetodon unicornis as its original name.
Adults are large, usually greenish-grey fish with a bony projection on the forehead, in front of the eyes. The projection does not extend past the mouth. FAO’s identification guide describes adults as having “a median horn-like projection anterior to eyes which does not extend in front of mouth.” Look as well for two bony plates on the narrow base of the tail, each bearing a forward-facing, knife-like spine; the spines and nearby area are bright blue.
Size
The Australian Museum gives a maximum total length of 70 cm. FAO also reports a common length of 50 cm and a maximum total length of 70 cm. These are length measurements, not weight estimates.

Where it lives
This unicornfish occurs broadly across the Indo-Pacific. FAO describes a range from the Red Sea and Natal east to Hawaii and French Polynesia, and in the western Pacific from Japan to central New South Wales. Fishes of Australia likewise records it across Indo-west-central Pacific waters, from the Red Sea and East Africa through to Hawaii and the Line and Pitcairn islands.
Its habitats include lagoons, channels, outer or seaward reefs, and rocky reef areas. FAO characterizes it as “an inshore species associated with coral reefs or rocky substrata.”

What it eats
Naso unicornis is herbivorous and grazes on macroalgae. FAO notes that it prefers leafy algae such as Sargassum and enters shallow water to feed; Fishes of Australia also describes its diet as macroalgae. These feeding facts establish what the fish eats, but do not by themselves show how its grazing affects reef health.
Use as food and conservation status
The fish is caught regionally using nets, traps, and spears, and FAO reports that it is marketed fresh. Fishes of Australia describes it as an important food fish in parts of its range. Those reports do not establish a worldwide harvest total or a single global fishery trend.

Do not rely on “long-nosed” alone: common names vary and can be shared. For a more reliable comparison, check the horn’s position and how far it projects relative to the mouth, the color and shape of the spines at the tail base, adult size, range, and habitat and diet. For N. unicornis, the key combination is a forehead horn that stops short of the mouth and bright-blue, forward-facing spines on the caudal peduncle.
