Fish can lay anywhere from thousands of eggs to hundreds of thousands or even millions, depending on the species, the female’s size and condition, and how often she spawns. There is no single number for all fish—and eggs counted in one batch are not necessarily the total produced in a season.

How many eggs does one fish lay?

It depends on the fish and on what is being counted. “Fecundity” means the number of eggs, or ova, a female may spawn in a given season. A count may instead describe eggs released in one batch or present in a female at a particular time. Those figures are not interchangeable, especially for species that spawn repeatedly.

Examples show how widely counts can differ: female largemouth bass have thousands of eggs, while haddock and summer flounder can produce hundreds of thousands to millions. These examples use different counting frames, so they should not be treated as a direct ranking or as the smallest and largest counts among all fish.

Fish Reported egg count What the figure describes
Largemouth bass Usually 2,000–7,000 eggs per pound of female body weight; about 4,000 eggs per female on average Texas A&M AgriLife Extension’s species-specific guidance; publication date not shown. A female releases a few hundred adhesive eggs at a time, and several females may contribute eggs to one male’s nest. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension
Haddock Around 850,000 for an average-sized female; up to 3 million for larger females NOAA Fisheries says haddock release eggs in batches. Profile accessed September 28, 2026; publication date not captured. NOAA Fisheries
Summer flounder 460,000 to more than 4 million, depending on female size NOAA Fisheries reports that females spawn several times through the season. Profile accessed September 28, 2026; publication date not captured. NOAA Fisheries
Rainbow trout 1,000–10,000 eggs per female Range in an FAO trout-propagation guide; it is a hatchery reference, not a universal count for every rainbow trout. Publication date not captured. FAO trout-propagation guide

Do fish lay all their eggs at once?

No. Some fish release eggs in batches and spawn more than once during a season. For those fish, the seasonal total depends on both the number of eggs in each batch and how many times the female spawns. Haddock and summer flounder are examples of batch or repeated spawners in the NOAA profiles above.

Other fish have a more seasonal, determinate supply of eggs. In some subtropical species, spawning can continue for months or much of the year, making a single batch count a poor stand-in for annual production. NOAA’s Southeast reproduction guidance describes these patterns in the context of Gulf-region species; its examples should not be taken as a rule for every fish. NOAA Fisheries: Fish reproduction

Why do egg counts vary?

Species and spawning strategy

Species differ greatly in reproductive output and in how they release eggs. A count for one species—or one spawning event—cannot serve as a general fish average. For batch spawners, estimating a season’s output requires knowing both batch size and spawning frequency.

Female size, age, and condition

Larger females can produce more eggs: NOAA reports that larger summer flounder tend toward the high end of that species’ range. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension expresses largemouth bass egg production both per pound of body weight and as an approximate average per female. Size is not an equally reliable predictor for every fish, however; NOAA notes that mature body weight can be a useful proxy for some cold-water species with determinate fecundity, while the relationship may break down in many tropical species that spawn over extended periods.

Age and condition matter as well. In a 2021 feature about a long-term flounder study, NOAA Fisheries reported that annual fecundity varies with a female’s size, age, and condition. Temperature and prey availability can affect growth, condition, and reproduction. NOAA Fisheries, April 2, 2021

Do more eggs mean more fish will survive?

No. Egg production is not the same as the number of fertilized eggs, hatched young, or fish that survive to adulthood. NOAA Fisheries fish biologist Mark Wuenschel put the connection in population terms: “Many marine fish produce hundreds of thousands to millions of eggs per female per year, the survival of which determines the future abundance of a population.” A large egg count alone does not establish how many offspring will recruit into the adult population.
