What Fish Are Good for Community Tanks? Peaceful Species and How to Choose

Small tetras, rasboras and danios are common community-tank choices, but the right mix depends on adult size, temperament, water conditions, space and schooling needs.

Small tetras, rasboras and danios are common starting points for a peaceful freshwater community tank. Corydoras, selected barbs and smaller rainbowfish can also fit, but compatibility depends on adult size, temperament, water conditions, swimming space and behavior—not just a species’ reputation.

How to choose community fish that can live together

Start with your aquarium rather than a list of popular fish. Check its actual water volume and footprint, test the water, and compare those readings with the preferred conditions of each species. Then consider adult size, activity, schooling needs, feeding speed and swimming level. A peaceful fish may still be a poor match for a much smaller, slower or more timid tank mate.

  • Adult size and space: Plan for the fish’s full-grown length and swimming needs. Territorial fish may need more room than a simple stocking rule suggests.
  • Water compatibility: Match temperature, pH and hardness or alkalinity to the fish and to your aquarium’s measured conditions. Seachem recommends testing water before adding fish; use a freshwater test kit to check pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.
  • Behavior and activity: Watch for fin-nipping, chasing and differences in energy. Active fish can unsettle slow or shy companions.
  • Group and swimming level: Many small community fish are schooling species. Plan for an appropriate group and distribute fish among surface, midwater and bottom zones to reduce competition.
  • Feeding and upkeep: Consider whether quicker fish will outcompete slower feeders and whether the total stocking level suits your filtration and maintenance routine.

Aqueon offers a rule of thumb of one inch of adult fish per net gallon, while noting that territorial fish need more space. Treat it as a rough starting point, not a stocking formula: it does not account for body shape, behavior, footprint, water quality or the needs of a school.

Good community fish to consider

Tetras and rasboras

Many tetras and rasboras are small, peaceful schooling fish used in mixed tropical aquariums. Aquarium Industries highlights them as generally small, peaceful and low-waste, and PetSmart describes them as peaceful community choices. PetSmart’s examples recommend groups of at least five; check the needs of the particular species rather than treating that number as universal. Avoid tank mates large enough to swallow them, and match their temperature and water requirements to your aquarium.

Danios

Danios are active schooling fish that can suit a community aquarium when the tank has appropriate swimming room and the water conditions overlap with those of their companions. Their energy may overwhelm very slow or shy fish, so compare activity levels before combining them.

Corydoras

Corydoras are peaceful, bottom-oriented catfish often kept with small, non-aggressive fish that use the middle of the tank. Requirements vary by species: confirm adult size, group needs and suitable substrate before buying. Their bottom-dwelling habits can complement midwater fish, but do not assume they are compatible with every fish that occupies another level.

Selected barbs

Some barbs are suitable for community tanks, but the group is not uniformly peaceful. Aqueon identifies cherry, gold, checkerboard and pentazona barbs as peaceful options and advises matching activity levels. Avoid assuming another barb species will behave the same way; watch tank mates for fin-nipping or persistent chasing.

Smaller rainbowfish

Rainbowfish need open swimming space and are best paired with companions of similar size. Aqueon recommends groups of six or more and gives these examples: blue-eyes or threadfins in 20 gallons, and neon dwarf rainbowfish in about 30 gallons. These figures apply to those named types, not rainbowfish as a whole; larger species need more room. Check the chosen species’ adult size and requirements before planning a group.

How to plan a community tank by size

Tank capacity alone cannot establish that a particular mix will work. The available guidance gives examples for some rainbowfish, but not a complete stocking plan for every aquarium size. Use your tank’s footprint, water readings and the needs of the exact species to build a suitable combination.

  1. Measure the aquarium and test its water. Record its usable volume and footprint, then measure pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Compare the results with the preferred conditions for each candidate species.
  2. Choose one or two compatible schooling groups. Select fish whose adult sizes, temperaments and temperature requirements overlap. Allow room for proper groups rather than planning around a single specimen of a schooling fish.
  3. Consider a different swimming level. Add a compatible bottom-dwelling group or a centerpiece fish only if the aquarium’s remaining space and filtration can support it. Different swimming levels can reduce competition, but do not guarantee compatibility.
  4. Add fish gradually and observe them. Watch whether all fish can feed and whether chasing or aggression develops. Be prepared to separate an individual that becomes aggressive; a peaceful species label cannot guarantee every fish’s behavior.

Why there is no universal community-fish combination

Compatibility varies with the exact species, individual behavior, adult size, aquarium conditions and available space. Minimum tank sizes and preferred parameter ranges can also differ by species, strain, source and regional practice. Even fish described as peaceful may not suit a particular combination. Use species-specific care information alongside measured water conditions and observation rather than relying on a generic stocking rule or a list of supposedly compatible fish.
