How Many Types of Fish Are There in India? A Species-Based Answer

India’s latest official figure is over 2,800 indigenous fish and shellfish species, including 917 freshwater, 394 brackishwater and 1,548 marine species. The total is not an exact finfish-only count.

India has more than 2,800 documented indigenous fish and shellfish species across freshwater, brackishwater and marine habitats, according to a 2 January 2026 release from the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying citing ICAR-NBFGR. The release lists 917 freshwater, 394 brackishwater and 1,548 marine species. Because shellfish are included, this is not an exact count of finfish alone.

What “types of fish” means here

For a species-count question, “types” means species. The official total concerns indigenous species—native or local organisms that evolved and adapted to particular regions and aquatic environments. It is a biodiversity figure, not the number of fish commonly caught, sold or raised on farms.

India’s official habitat breakdown

Habitat Species reported Scope
Freshwater 917 Indigenous fish and shellfish in the 2026 Ministry of Fisheries statement
Brackishwater 394 Indigenous fish and shellfish in the 2026 Ministry of Fisheries statement
Marine 1,548 Indigenous fish and shellfish in the 2026 Ministry of Fisheries statement
Total Over 2,800 Combined indigenous fish-and-shellfish headline figure

The three listed components total 2,859, while the release presents the national headline as “over 2,800.” Use that wording rather than converting it into a precise finfish total.

Why published fish counts differ

Different inventories count different organisms, waters and purposes. Before comparing a number, check these four attributes:

  • Habitat: freshwater, brackishwater, marine or a combination.
  • Organisms included: finfish only, or fish plus shellfish.
  • Geographic scope: all of India, Indian waters or the marine Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
  • Purpose and date: a biodiversity inventory, a stock-status assessment or a fisheries-use estimate.

Other published inventories—and what they do and do not show

Source and year Reported figure How to interpret it
ICAR-CMFRI training-manual abstract, 2025 1,838 marine and 1,048 freshwater finfish; the same abstract also says about 2,923 marine fishes The marine figures conflict within the abstract, and no matching brackishwater count is given. Treat this as evidence of inventory variation, not a reconciled national total.
ICAR-CMFRI, Marine Fish Stock Status of India, 2022, reported in 2023 2,275 teleost species and 174 elasmobranch species in India’s marine EEZ A marine-EEZ inventory only; it cannot be added to the nationwide freshwater, brackishwater and marine figure.
CMFRI commercial-fisheries estimate About 1,000 species contribute to commercial marine fisheries A measure of fisheries use, not the number of marine species present.

These figures should not be summed. They use different boundaries and definitions, and the 2025 abstract contains an unresolved internal discrepancy in its marine counts.

Species diversity is much broader than aquaculture production

India’s farms and fisheries rely heavily on a relatively small group of productive species. The Ministry of Fisheries notes that freshwater aquaculture is concentrated in a few major carps and that production is dominated by a few species. That concentration describes food production, not the country’s full native biodiversity.

Can we give an exact number of fish species alone?

Not from the sources available for this question. The latest nationwide official statement explicitly combines fish and shellfish, while other institutional counts use different scopes and, in one case, conflicting marine totals. The defensible answer is therefore more than 2,800 indigenous fish and shellfish species; an exact, directly comparable finfish-only national total is not established by these figures.

What the number says about India’s aquatic habitats

Freshwater

Rivers, lakes, reservoirs, floodplain wetlands and other inland waters account for the official 917-species category. These habitats range from Himalayan coldwater systems to tropical peninsular rivers and wetlands.

Brackishwater

Estuaries, lagoons, deltas and mangrove-lined coasts form the 394-species brackishwater category, where freshwater and seawater mix and salinity changes with tides and seasons.

Marine

Coastal waters and the open sea make up the 1,548-species marine category in the 2026 nationwide statement. Marine assessments may report larger or differently defined totals when they cover India’s EEZ and separate teleosts from elasmobranchs.

How to quote the answer accurately

  1. Say “more than 2,800 indigenous fish and shellfish species in India.”
  2. Include the habitat breakdown—917 freshwater, 394 brackishwater and 1,548 marine—when useful.
  3. Do not call 2,800 an exact finfish count.
  4. Label marine-EEZ, finfish-only and commercial-fishery figures separately.
  5. Attach the publication year and institution when comparing inventories.

ICAR’s Handbook of Fisheries and Aquaculture covers marine capture fisheries, mariculture, coastal and freshwater aquaculture, inland and coldwater fisheries, processing and trade. It is a broad fisheries reference for students, researchers, planners, farmers and other stakeholders—not a substitute for a species-by-species identification guide.
