PetSmart’s live-fish FAQ explains that the price depends on the fish type and where it is obtained. It gives a much broader range of under $1 to $40 for all live fish, so that figure should not be treated as the normal betta price.

Yes, but online availability does not mean a particular fish is ready at every location. PetSmart directs shoppers to browse online and then visit the local store to see nearby fish.

What is the cheapest betta at PetSmart?
Among the displayed listings checked, the lowest price was $3.99 for female veiltail and female crowntail bettas. A $3.99 fish is only the purchase price; it is not the cost of keeping the animal safely.

What you need besides the fish
PetSmart’s Betta Care Guide says bettas need a heated and filtered aquarium of at least 3 gallons, although a 10-gallon tank is easier to maintain. A suitable setup includes:
- An aquarium of at least 3 gallons
- A hood or cover with a light
- A heater and thermometer
- Substrate
- Décor
- Live or artificial plants
- A filter
- Water conditioner or dechlorinator
For water management, PetSmart lists an ideal temperature of 72–76°F (25–28°C), ammonia at 0 ppm, nitrite at 0 ppm, and nitrate below 20 ppm. These care figures come from PetSmart’s guide, which does not state a publication year.

Can a PetSmart betta live with other fish?
Bettas are not schooling fish. PetSmart says males generally do not tolerate other male bettas. Community-tank compatibility is not guaranteed, and any mixed housing requires close monitoring for aggression. A single-betta setup is therefore the simplest plan when budgeting for your first fish.

The Platinum Betta Male page states that the fish can grow up to 3 inches, has an average lifespan of 2–3 years, and is covered by a 14-day replacement-or-refund policy if it becomes ill during that initial period or you are not satisfied. A practical PetSmart buying checklist
- Choose the fish variety and note its displayed price.
- Select your intended PetSmart store online and verify availability.
