The work began with the Shen programme in Kibber and has expanded into camera-trap monitoring, dog-population surveys and wider tracking activities.
What women-led snow leopard conservation looks like in Spiti
Conservation in Upper Spiti is not limited to observing snow leopards. It also depends on how villages manage livestock, water, land and other shared resources. Women have contributed in each of these areas, sometimes through a formal programme and sometimes through responsibilities they already carried within their communities.
Livelihoods created an entry point
Shen began in Kibber in 2013 as a women-led conservation enterprise. Participants made and sold handmade goods while taking part in community conservation actions. The model offered a practical way into conservation for women who had been less involved in formal wildlife projects.
Women already held important governance roles
A study of water management in the Trans-Himalayan Spiti Valley, published in 2021, found that women in Kibber handled daily irrigation-water distribution, helped arbitrate disputes and set irrigation timing. Those responsibilities show that women’s conservation role is not only an employment question; it is also a question of who makes decisions about shared resources.

“If the Sustainable Development Goal of ‘no one left behind’ is to be achieved, it is essential that the perspectives, knowledge, and interests of both men and women be integrated into decision-making.”

Local knowledge is being combined with field science
The Nature Conservation Foundation’s Women in Conservation project describes women participating in snow leopard research and monitoring. Their observations and field records contribute to knowledge about behaviour, movement patterns and seasonal habitat use.
What was the Shen programme?
Shen is the Spitian word for snow leopard. The Kibber initiative combined sales of handmade products with conservation participation rather than treating livelihoods and wildlife protection as separate projects.
By 2022, Snow Leopard Trust reported that the initiative had reached more than five additional villages and connected 105 women with conservation. More than 20% of adult women in the target villages were participating at that point. These are programme figures for the period reported, not a claim that every woman in Spiti takes part.
What happened to the enterprise model?
The Nature Conservation Foundation says the enterprise model later phased out. Women retained the knitting skills developed through the programme and continued making socks, beanies and mufflers. The relationships built through Shen also helped create a route into scientific training.

Can women track snow leopards in Kibber?
Yes. Women in Kibber have received training to deploy camera traps and take part in monitoring. This is structured field work, not simply an informal sighting record.
Camera-trap training
In 2023, the Nature Conservation Foundation organised a camera-trap workshop exclusively for Kibber women. Eleven women completed classroom instruction and hands-on field deployment. Camera traps can record animal presence and activity without requiring a person to remain at the site, producing data that researchers can analyse over time.

Snow Leopard Trust’s 2025 account says women in Kibber and Chicham conduct annual dog-population surveys. It also reports that 30 women from Chicham, Mane and Demul joined the wider tracking initiative. These activities broaden participation beyond a single village and add repeated field observations to camera-based monitoring.

How the different conservation approaches fit together
| Approach | Women’s role | What it contributes | Documented timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shen livelihood enterprise | Making and selling handmade goods alongside conservation actions | An entry point to participation and relationships that supported later training | Started in Kibber in 2013; the first seven-year assessment covers 2013–2019 |
| Commons governance | Distributing irrigation water, arbitrating disputes and setting irrigation timing | Women’s authority in community decisions about shared resources | Described in a 2021 study of Spiti water management |
| Camera-trap monitoring | Classroom training, equipment deployment and field monitoring | Instrument-generated records of behaviour, movement and habitat use | Eleven Kibber women trained in 2023 |
| Tracking and dog surveys | Annual dog-population surveys and participation in a wider tracking initiative | Repeated local observations that complement other monitoring methods | Reported by Snow Leopard Trust in 2025 |
What the evidence shows—and what it does not
The strongest academic assessment of Shen covers its first seven years, from 2013 through 2019, and was published in Environmental Conservation in 2022. Later participation and training figures come from organisational updates, including the Nature Conservation Foundation’s project information and Snow Leopard Trust’s 2025 account. Those dates matter because programme size and activities can change.
The available accounts document participation, training and monitoring roles. They do not provide a single current population estimate for snow leopards in Spiti, and camera trapping or tracking alone cannot establish that the regional population is recovering. Conservation outcomes require long-term analysis alongside information about habitat, prey, livestock and human-wildlife conflict.
The work does, however, show a progression from participation to agency: women joined through livelihood activities, brought existing knowledge of community resources, and then gained access to tools used in wildlife monitoring.

How to support women-led snow leopard conservation
Support verified programmes
Check the current official channels of the Nature Conservation Foundation and Snow Leopard Trust for active Women in Conservation, partnership or donation opportunities. Programme names and funding routes can change, so confirm that an appeal is current before sending money.
Fund equipment with clear expectations
A wildlife camera trap is the most directly documented physical item connected with this work because the Nature Conservation Foundation has trained women to deploy camera traps. If a product is sold to support monitoring, describe it as equipment for community wildlife work—not as a purchase that automatically makes a guaranteed conservation donation.
Buy Shen-style wool products only through a verified route
Socks, beanies and mufflers remain a mission-aligned opportunity because women retained these skills after the enterprise phase. The currently described pages do not verify an active Shen ecommerce or affiliate route, so avoid presenting an unconfirmed shop or reseller as an official way to fund the programme.
Quick Recap
Look for accountable claims
- Prefer organisations that identify the village, activity, partners and reporting period.
- Ask whether funds support training, equipment, monitoring or general operations.
- Be wary of claims that a single purchase proves population recovery or directly funds a named woman unless the organisation documents that connection.
