How Much Should I Feed My Dog or Cat to Help Them Lose Weight?

The right weight-loss portion depends on your pet’s target weight, health and food. Get a veterinary calorie goal, measure the specific food and count every extra.

There isn’t one correct number of cups for every overweight pet. Ask your veterinarian to assess your dog’s or cat’s body condition, set a realistic target weight and daily calorie goal, then measure the specific food to match that goal. Count treats and other extras, too, and adjust the plan based on your pet’s progress.

How do I find the right daily amount?

Start with your veterinarian, not the feeding chart on the bag. Package directions are general starting points; they do not account for your pet’s ideal weight, body condition, age, activity, whether they are neutered, current food intake or health conditions. Those details—and the food’s calorie density—affect the appropriate portion.

  1. Have your veterinarian assess your pet. They can evaluate body condition and health, estimate an appropriate target weight, and decide how quickly weight loss should proceed. The target may change as body condition improves.
  2. Get an individualized daily calorie goal. AAHA advises basing weight-loss calculations on ideal weight and adjusting for the individual. The veterinarian can also account for current intake, lifestyle and medical needs.
  3. Convert calories to a measured portion. Check the food label for its calorie content, such as kcal per cup or per kilogram. Divide the prescribed daily calories by the calories in the relevant unit of food to determine the amount. Include calories from treats and other food in the daily total.
  4. Measure each day’s portion consistently. A gram scale can help avoid the extra calories that come from heaped scoops or inconsistent measuring. Keep track of who feeds the pet and what is offered.

There is a calorie equation, but it is not a do-it-yourself prescription. AAHA’s 2021 resource gives resting energy requirement (RER) as 70 × body weight in kilograms0.75 and says to use ideal weight for weight-loss calculations, with individual adjustment. Its example of a 10 lb neutered dog estimates maintenance at 302 kcal/day; that is a maintenance estimate, not a weight-loss target. Ask your veterinarian for the goal that applies to your pet.

AAHA’s 2021 resource also summarizes mean weight-loss intakes over a 12-week period as 63 ± 10.2 kcal/kg0.75 for dogs and 52 ± 4.9 kcal/kg0.711 for cats. These are reported study means, not universal calorie targets for individual pets.

How fast should my dog or cat lose weight?

AAHA’s 2014 Weight Management Guidelines give desired weekly loss rates of 1–2% of body weight for dogs and 0.5–2% for cats. These are monitoring targets for a managed plan—not permission to sharply cut food without veterinary guidance.

Weigh your pet regularly and keep veterinary rechecks, commonly about every two weeks early in the plan. If progress is faster or slower than expected, share the measurements with the veterinarian so the calorie goal and plan can be reviewed. Growth, illness, medication effects, muscle loss and other health concerns can change the appropriate pace.

Should I switch to a veterinary weight-loss food?

Ask your veterinarian whether a therapeutic weight-loss diet is appropriate. During calorie restriction, a pet may need more nutrients per calorie than a regular maintenance food provides. AAHA describes therapeutic diets as having more protein, vitamins and minerals per calorie than over-the-counter foods; Cornell cautions that simply restricting a maintenance diet can risk nutritional deficiencies. A therapeutic food may also provide a larger portion for the same calories.

Approach What to weigh with your veterinarian
Veterinary therapeutic weight-loss diet Whether its nutrient profile, calorie density and portion size suit your pet’s health, appetite and calorie goal.
Reduced portion of the current maintenance food Whether the restricted amount still provides adequate nutrients, and whether the plan can be monitored safely.

Labels such as “light” or “weight management” do not by themselves establish that a food is suitable. Compare calorie density and nutritional adequacy with veterinary help, and follow the portion and monitoring plan your veterinarian recommends.

Do not impose severe calorie restriction on your own. AAHA’s 2014 guideline describes 80% of ideal-weight RER as an effective, tolerated clinical starting approach with monitoring and individual adjustment. It warns that restriction below 60% of ideal-weight RER raises nutrient-deficiency and behavior risks and can increase the risk of hepatic lipidosis in cats. When such severe restriction is needed, the guideline calls for consultation with or referral to a board-certified veterinary nutritionist.

Can I still give treats?

Yes, if they are included in the calorie plan. Count treats, table scraps, chews and food used to give medication; uncounted extras can undermine the measured portion. Cornell advises keeping dog treats to about 10% of daily calories, and AAHA’s feeding-plan guidance says complete-and-balanced food should make up at least 90% of intake. Ask your veterinarian how to apply a treat allowance to your pet’s plan.

How can I make the plan easier to follow?

  • Measure the full daily ration first. Set aside the day’s food, including any kibble you plan to use as treats, so additions are visible.
  • Coordinate everyone in the household. Shared bowls, free-feeding and untracked snacks make it hard to know what the pet actually eats. Agree on who feeds and what is allowed.
  • Choose a practical feeding method. Measured meals, an automatic feeder or a food puzzle may help with consistency or feeding behavior. These are optional implementation aids; they do not determine the right calorie goal.
  • Add activity gradually when appropriate. Regular movement can complement dietary changes, but choose activity that fits your pet’s health and fitness. Ask the veterinarian what is safe, especially if your pet has health limitations.

When should I call the veterinarian?

Contact the veterinary team if your pet is losing weight faster or slower than the agreed target, appears to be losing muscle, or has a health change during the plan. Seek individualized advice before starting a weight-loss plan for a growing pet or one with illness, medication effects or other medical concerns. Do not respond to slow progress by making a drastic food cut without guidance.
