How to Help an Overweight Dog Lose Weight Safely

A safe dog weight-loss plan starts with a veterinary assessment, individualized food portions, counted treats, gradual activity, and regular monitoring.

To help an overweight dog lose weight safely, start with a veterinarian—not a drastic food cut or an ambitious exercise plan. A veterinarian can confirm whether your dog has excess body fat, check for health or mobility problems, set a realistic goal, and calculate an individualized feeding plan. At home, measure every meal, count treats, add activity gradually, and track body condition as well as weight.

How do I know if my dog is overweight?

Look at your dog from above and from the side, and gently feel over the ribs. Ribs that are difficult to feel beneath a layer of fat, a waist that is hard to see from above, and a rounded abdomen with little or no upward tuck from the side can indicate excess body fat. These are clues, not a diagnosis: coat, build, age, and muscle loss can make appearance harder to judge.

A veterinarian can assess body condition using a scoring system, review your dog’s history, and distinguish excess fat from other changes in body shape or weight. Ask the veterinarian to assess muscle condition too; scale weight alone does not show whether a dog is losing fat, muscle, or both. The American Animal Hospital Association’s 2021 Nutrition and Weight Management Guidelines emphasize evaluating body and muscle condition along with weight.

What should I do before changing food or exercise?

Book a veterinary assessment before putting your dog on a weight-loss regimen, particularly if your dog has pain, limited mobility, another illness, or weight changes you cannot explain. Ask the veterinary team to confirm the goal, calculate an appropriate calorie target, recommend a complete diet, and explain how often to check progress.

There is no single calorie number or walk duration that is safe for every dog. Needs vary with body size, health, activity, and the amount of weight to lose. AAHA’s consumer guidance describes a general safe pace for dogs of 1%–3% of body weight per month; that is a broad guide, not an individual prescription or a reason to accelerate a plan without veterinary advice. See AAHA’s guidance on whether a pet is overweight.

How much should I feed my dog to lose weight?

Feed the amount calculated for your dog by the veterinary team, not an estimate based only on the food bag’s maintenance feeding guide. Weigh or measure each portion consistently. A kitchen scale can make portions easier to repeat; a measuring cup can also help if you use it accurately. Include every meal, training reward, chew, table scrap, and food used to give medication when you discuss the plan.

Do not simply make a large cut to the current ration. Restricting an ordinary food too sharply may leave the dog short of essential nutrients as well as calories. For significant calorie restriction, AAHA recommends considering a nutrient-fortified therapeutic diet that can supply needed nutrients in a smaller portion. The right choice depends on the dog’s other health needs, calorie target, and what the household can measure and feed consistently. Ask the veterinarian to compare options rather than switching or restricting food on your own. AAHA explains the clinical considerations in Weight Reduction in the Obese Pet.

Count treats and food extras

VCA Animal Hospitals advises that treats and snacks make up no more than 10% of a dog’s daily calorie intake. Treats are part of the total, not extra calories outside the plan. Ask the veterinarian how to fit rewards into your dog’s target; low-calorie treats or non-food rewards such as praise and play may make consistency easier. VCA’s Obesity in Dogs article gives this treat guidance.

Choose food for the dog and the plan

A therapeutic weight-management food may be useful when a dog needs substantial calorie restriction, but it is not automatically the right choice for every dog. The veterinary team can weigh nutrient adequacy, calorie density, other medical needs, and whether everyone feeding the dog can follow the prescribed amount. Avoid home-formulated calorie-restricted diets unless a veterinary nutritionist has formulated them.

How much exercise should my dog get?

Build activity gradually around your dog’s current fitness, health, and comfort. Short, manageable bouts of movement that you can repeat consistently are a better starting point than suddenly increasing duration or intensity. Activity supports a weight plan, but it does not replace measured calorie intake, and there is no universal exercise prescription that fits every dog.

If your dog limps, seems painful, tires unusually quickly, or has limited mobility, stop increasing activity and ask the veterinarian what is safe. A rehabilitation practitioner may help tailor movement for dogs with joint or mobility problems. Puzzle or slow feeders can add engagement at mealtimes, but they do not cause weight loss by themselves. AAHA’s dog weight-loss tips discuss gradual, dog-appropriate activity.

How should I monitor progress and adjust the plan?

Reweigh your dog and reassess body and muscle condition at intervals agreed with the veterinary team. Keep a simple record of weight, portions, treats, and any changes in activity; this helps the team interpret progress and adjust the plan rather than relying on memory. If weight is not changing as expected, do not cut food further without guidance.

AAHA notes that medical factors such as hypothyroidism, Cushing’s disease, osteoarthritis, and some chronic medications can affect weight or a dog’s ability to lose it. A veterinary review can check whether a health issue, medication, feeding discrepancy, or plan adjustment needs attention. Once your dog reaches the agreed goal, continue with a maintenance feeding and monitoring plan; reaching the target is not the end of weight management.

A practical starting checklist

  1. Arrange an assessment: Ask the veterinarian to evaluate body and muscle condition, health, mobility, and a suitable target.
  2. Get an individualized feeding target: Confirm the daily amount and whether your dog needs a therapeutic diet or another complete food.
  3. Measure everything eaten: Portion meals consistently and account for treats, chews, scraps, and training rewards.
  4. Increase activity carefully: Choose repeatable movement that suits your dog; get guidance first for pain or mobility limits.
  5. Track and review: Recheck weight and body condition with the veterinary team, adjust only with guidance, and plan for maintenance.

AAHA’s consumer article reports a general weight-loss pace of 1%–3% of body weight per month for dogs. That range is general guidance, not a required rate for an individual dog. The AAHA 2021 guideline executive summary also reports a mean intake of 63 ± 10.2 kcal/kg0.75 over 12 weeks in cited recent dog weight-loss data. That study figure is not a universal feeding prescription; your veterinarian must calculate and individualize your dog’s intake.
