The appointment is also your chance to establish a care plan tailored to your dog—not to follow a generic vaccine or testing schedule.
What should I do before my dog’s first vet visit?
Book promptly and brief the clinic
Call soon after your dog joins your household and say that this is their first visit. Share their age, where they came from—such as a breeder, rescue, shelter, or previous owner—and any known medical history or current concerns. Mention if travel, handling, fear, reactivity, or attempts to escape may make the visit difficult. Ask how the clinic prepares for a first appointment and whether it has specific instructions for you. The American Kennel Club’s preparation guidance recommends discussing the visit plan with clinic staff in advance.
Gather records and questions
Bring any medical paperwork you have, especially vaccination and deworming history. The American Veterinary Medical Association advises taking records from the original owner to the first veterinary visit; breeder or rescue documents can help the veterinarian understand what has already been done.
Make a short list of questions, and note any medications, symptoms, changes in appetite, or behavior concerns. For a puppy, the AKC suggests bringing a fecal sample for parasite examination. Check with the clinic first about whether it wants one and how to collect and store it.

Practice gentle handling
In brief, low-pressure sessions, touch a paw, ear, or the area around your dog’s mouth for a few seconds, then reward them with a treat or play. Keep the interaction easy and positive. Cornell’s guidance on visiting the veterinarian cautions against forcing contact: if your dog moves away, make the exercise easier or stop and seek guidance. Short car rides that do not always end at the clinic can also help build more positive travel associations.
What should I bring to my dog’s first vet visit?
- Available vaccination, deworming, and other medical records from the breeder, rescue, shelter, or prior owner.
- A written list of questions, symptoms, medications, and changes you have noticed.
- Small, soft treats your dog likes, if treats are suitable for them, and a familiar toy if that helps them feel at ease.
- A puppy fecal sample only if the clinic requests one, with its instructions for collection and storage.
Some dogs will not eat when stressed, so treats are a helpful option rather than a requirement. A lick mat with a dog-safe spread can be another optional distraction; check that the spread is appropriate for your dog and ask whether the clinic allows it. Neither special equipment nor a particular treat is essential.

What happens at a puppy’s first vet appointment?
The exact visit depends on the dog’s age, condition, behavior, and records. In its overview of a puppy’s first vet visit, the AKC describes possible components including weighing the puppy; listening to the heart and lungs; taking a temperature; and examining the eyes, ears, nose, feet, genitalia, skin, coat, teeth, mouth, abdomen, and lymph nodes. A fecal examination may also be discussed or performed.
The veterinarian may ask about your dog’s history and discuss feeding, parasite medication, microchipping, sterilization, treatment instructions, and follow-up. Those are examples of topics that might arise, not a guaranteed order or checklist for every appointment. The veterinarian may adapt the examination to your dog and the information available.

Ask what a proposed test or treatment is for, which decisions need to be made now and which can wait, how to give any prescribed medicine, and when to return. The veterinarian should set vaccines, tests, preventive care, and follow-up after reviewing your dog’s documented history and individual circumstances. If records are missing or incomplete, say so rather than guessing what your dog has already received.

Plan for the waiting room and handling
If your dog is fearful or reactive, tell the clinic before the appointment and ask how it can reduce waiting-room exposure. Depending on the clinic’s setup, you may be able to wait in an exam room, outside, or in your car until staff are ready. Cornell notes that low-stress approaches may include quieter spaces, minimal restraint, and floor-level examinations when appropriate.

Labels such as Fear Free or Low Stress Handling describe approaches, not a guarantee of exactly what a particular clinic will do. Ask how the team responds to a frightened dog, whether you can stay with your dog when feasible, and what options it has to reduce stress. Keep the conversation practical: tell staff what your dog does when worried, including freezing, vocalizing, struggling, or trying to escape.
Use rewards without forcing participation
Offer small, soft treats during calm handling if your dog is interested in food; Cornell recommends treats that can be broken into pieces, and the American Animal Hospital Association’s preparation guidance also supports using treats during handling and visits. A familiar toy may help too. Let the veterinary team know what your dog finds reassuring, and follow its lead if the dog becomes overwhelmed.
