Before anyone arrives, make a plan that keeps your dog under control and prevents unwanted contact. Give the dog space around food, sleep, puppies, and valued items; ask visitors not to approach or pet it unless you agree and the dog is comfortable; and closely supervise children. For a service visit, arrange the dog’s location before opening the door or allowing work to begin.
Why a home visit can create bite risk
Any dog can bite, and a familiar home or a usually friendly temperament does not remove the need to manage interactions. The CDC lists fear, nervousness, eating, play, protecting toys or puppies, illness, and wanting to be left alone among contexts associated with bites. An unfamiliar person entering the home may encounter a dog in one of those situations without realizing it.
Workers can be exposed, too. A CDC report estimated that 16,476 dog bites among people aged over 16—8% of the bites in the report—were work-related in 2001, including some bites during home visits. This is a historical estimate, not a current rate. The report also cited earlier research finding that 75% of fatal dog bites in 1997–1998 were inflicted on family members or guests on the family’s property; that figure is historical and is reported here through the CDC report’s attribution.
Prepare the dog and the space before anyone arrives
Identify situations where the dog needs space
Do not let visitors disturb a dog that is eating, sleeping, or caring for puppies. Keep people away from the dog when it has a valued toy or other item it may protect. Leave it alone if it is hiding or seeking space, and stop an interaction if it appears scared, sick, or angry. These are practical ways to avoid contact in situations the CDC identifies as potential bite contexts.

Use separation to prevent unwanted contact
Decide where the dog will be while guests or workers enter and move around. A closed room, a secure barrier, or another arrangement that reliably keeps the dog apart may help manage access. A pet gate is one possible household aid, not a guarantee of safety: the CDC does not test or endorse gates or rank household barriers. Choose an arrangement that keeps the dog under adult control and does not depend on a visitor remembering to avoid it.
Make the plan before opening the door
Put the dog in its planned space before the arrival, rather than trying to manage an excited or uncertain dog while someone is coming through the entrance. Tell visitors where the dog is and what to do if they see it. For a service visit, explain the arrangement before work begins and keep the dog separated for the duration of the visit if that is needed to prevent contact.

Set clear rules for guests meeting the dog
The CDC recommends asking the owner before petting, letting a new dog approach first, staying still, and giving the dog time to see and sniff the person before reaching out. Make clear that visitors should not approach or pet the dog unless you have agreed and the dog appears comfortable. A visitor’s wish to greet the dog does not override the dog’s need for space.
- Ask guests to follow your instructions rather than calling, cornering, or reaching toward the dog.
- Do not allow anyone to approach the dog while it eats, sleeps, cares for puppies, or is hiding.
- Stop the interaction if the dog seems scared, sick, or angry; create space instead of encouraging the visitor to continue.
Supervise children closely
Young children should not play with dogs without adult supervision, even if they know the dog. Stay close enough to intervene and prevent the child from disturbing the dog around food, sleep, puppies, or valued belongings. If you cannot actively supervise, use the planned separation arrangement instead of relying on a child to follow the rules.

Include delivery, repair, and other service visits in the plan
Do not assume that a worker’s brief visit is too short for a bite to happen. The CDC’s historical work-related estimate includes some injuries during home visits, but the cited sources do not provide current rates by occupation or a detailed protocol for delivery, utility, repair, or other workers entering a private home.
As a practical household measure, prevent direct contact and maintain control of the dog throughout the visit. Secure the dog before the worker enters, keep it separated while the person is inside, and tell the worker if the dog is elsewhere in the home. These steps are practical planning advice, not an occupation-specific CDC checklist.

The CDC says nearly one in five people bitten by a dog requires medical attention. Wash a minor wound with soap and water. Seek medical attention for a deep or serious wound, or if you are unsure whether the dog is vaccinated against rabies. The CDC’s dog guidance provides further bite-care advice.
