That depth is a starting point from Maine fisheries guidance, not a guarantee; brook trout may be found in less than five feet, and the right spot varies by water and conditions.
Where to look for brook trout
Begin in shallow water near shore, especially around shoreline structure. Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife guidance puts winter brook trout in roughly 4–12 feet, while noting some anglers target water under five feet. Use a depth map to find shallow shoreline areas, then move or adjust depth if you are not finding fish. Explore fresh areas rather than assuming one depth works across lakes or throughout the season.
What to use
Keep the tackle and offering small. Maine lists small jigs, small minnows and pieces of nightcrawler as options; its brook trout species information also names copper jigs, minnows and worms. Use a light or ultralight rod and reel, and check local rules before selecting bait.
How to fish a jig
- Lower a small jig to the depth you want to try.
- Give it a quick lift with your wrist.
- Let it fall and flutter back down while watching for a bite; respond promptly when you detect one.
The Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC describes this lift-and-drop presentation with a bait-tipped lure. It is a practical technique, not a guarantee of a catch.

When to use a tip-up instead
A tip-up or trap lets you set bait and watch for its flag rather than actively controlling a jig. Maine’s general winter guidance describes both trapping and jigging as potentially successful. The sources do not establish a universal catch-rate winner, and whether tip-ups, particular baits or a given number of lines are allowed depends on local regulations.
| Approach | How it works | Check before fishing |
|---|---|---|
| Jigging | Actively lift a small jig and let it flutter down. | Confirm the lure and any bait you add are permitted. |
| Tip-up or trap | Set bait beneath a flag and monitor the line. | Confirm traps are allowed and check the local line limit and bait rules. |
Check regulations for the exact water
There is no single brook trout ice-fishing season, bait rule, catch limit or access permission that applies everywhere. Check the current regulations for the specific lake and jurisdiction before you travel or choose bait. For example, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation guidance says nearly all Adirondack ponds and small lakes where brook trout reside are closed to ice fishing, and baitfish use or possession is prohibited on those waters. That is a regional example, not a rule for other locations.

Check ice conditions and reduce spread of invasive species
Do not assume ice is uniformly safe based on a general thickness figure. Ontario cautions that ice can vary, with flowing water, springs, cracks, old holes, and river or stream mouths among places that may be weak. Check local conditions and guidance, reassess as you move, and tell someone where you plan to fish.
To help limit invasive-species spread, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service advises using commercial bait at only one waterbody, putting unused bait in the trash, cleaning gear and draining water from equipment. Follow the specific bait and decontamination rules where you fish.
