The correct Litter-Robot reset depends on your model and the problem. On a Litter-Robot, “reset” may mean recalibrating the cat sensor, resetting the waste-drawer gauge, power-cycling the unit, reconnecting Wi-Fi, or restoring factory settings.
If you have a Litter-Robot 3 and recently added litter, emptied the drawer, moved the unit, or cleaned it, return the globe to the Home position, wait for the solid blue ready light, then press and release Reset once. Do not use that LR3 instruction on an LR4, LR5, 5 Pro, or EVO; their controls and reset procedures differ.
Choose the right kind of reset
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Added or removed litter | Recalibrate the cat/weight sensor where your model supports it. On the LR3, press Reset once while the unit is Home with a blue light. |
| Emptied the waste drawer | Reset the physical sensor if needed and, on supported LR3 app setups, select Controls > Reset Gauge. |
| Moved or cleaned the unit | Place it on a firm, level surface, check the feet and cords, then recalibrate or restart according to the model. |
| Frozen, offline, or behaving erratically | Perform the model-specific power or hard reset. |
| Changed your router or Wi-Fi password | Use the Whisker app’s network-update or onboarding process. |
| Selling or transferring ownership | Use the supported factory-reset procedure, then remove the device from your Whisker account. |
| Error light, LCD message, or motor fault | Inspect for physical causes first. A factory reset will not remove an obstruction or repair failed hardware. |
Whisker separates instructions by model in its getting-started hub. Identify your unit before pressing button combinations.
How to identify your Litter-Robot
- Litter-Robot 3 or 3 Connect: Traditional control panel with Power, Cycle, Empty, and Reset buttons.
- Litter-Robot 4: Modern control panel with a Connect button.
- Litter-Robot 5 or 5 Pro: Control panel with an LCD screen and Cycle/Cancel controls.
- Litter-Robot EVO: Newer model with its own model-specific instructions.
Do not assume that a button labeled Reset performs the same job across generations.

How to reset a Litter-Robot 3
Routine reset after adding litter or emptying the drawer
- Wait until the globe is in the Home position.
- Confirm the lower-left light is solid blue.
- Press and release the Reset button once.
- Wait for the unit to return to its ready state.
- Add litter only to the recommended fill line; do not overfill.
- If you change the litter weight again, press Reset once more.
On the LR3, this recalibrates the cat sensor—the unit’s weight scale. Whisker recommends this after adding or removing litter, emptying the waste drawer, moving the unit, or cleaning it. See the official LR3 Reset button instructions and LR3 getting-started guide.
Do not hold Reset unless you intend to change another function. Pressing Reset during a cycle pauses the cycle; pressing it again while paused cancels the cycle. Pressing it during the red cycle-delay light cancels the delay. Holding Reset activates or exits control-panel lockout.
What the LR3 lights mean
| Light | Likely meaning |
|---|---|
| Solid blue | Ready for use. |
| Flashing blue | Waste drawer full. |
| Slow flashing yellow | Interrupted cycle or bonnet issue. |
| Fast flashing yellow | Possible pinch condition. |
| Solid red | Cat detected and cycle-delay countdown active. |
| Flashing red | Cat-sensor fault. |
After powering on, an LR3 begins a clean cycle that takes approximately 21⁄2 minutes. The full light guide is available from Whisker’s LR3 buttons and lights page.
Power-reset an LR3
- Turn the unit off.
- Unplug the power cable from the back of the base.
- Wait one minute.
- Plug it back in.
- Power it on and allow the cycle to complete.
This is a power reset, not a factory reset. It normally restarts the electronics without erasing the device’s account or network configuration. Whisker recommends this sequence in its LR3 offline troubleshooting guidance.
Reconnect an LR3 Connect to Wi-Fi
- Update the Whisker app.
- Open the app and select your Litter-Robot 3.
- Open the Settings gear.
- Choose Update Network.
- Follow the onboarding prompts.
- If needed, reboot the router and move the router and robot closer together.
If the app cannot onboard the unit, first put the LR3 in a ready state: quickly tap Reset and confirm that the lower-left Ready light becomes solid blue. Wait five to ten seconds, then press and hold Cycle + Empty together for approximately three seconds. Release when the Power light turns blue.

- MONITOR + CONTROL VIA APP: Control the smart litter box straight from the Whisker app. Monitor waste and litter levels in real time, see litter box activity, and track kitty's weight after each use. Compatible with any clumping litter
- REDUCES LITTER BOX ODORS & TRACKING: The automatic clean cycle and OdorTrap Packs significantly reduce odors compared to standard litter boxes. The LitterTrap Mat and fence reduce litter tracking by catching litter on the way out
- SAFETY & USE: Suitable for up to 4 cats; each cat must weigh at least 3 lbs (1.4 kg) to safely use Litter-Robot in Automatic Mode. Weight scale technology is most accurate when the unit sits on a firm surface, not carpeting or uneven surfaces
This activates onboarding mode, allowing the app to connect to the device hotspot, register the unit, connect it to your home network, and confirm internet access. Do not hold the combination too long; Whisker warns that excessive timing can cause the light to turn red. If onboarding still fails, power off, unplug for one minute, reconnect, and retry. See Whisker’s onboarding instructions and red Power-light troubleshooting.
How to reset a Litter-Robot 4
For an LR4 hard reset, use either of Whisker’s verified methods:
- Unplug method: Unplug the unit for 15 seconds, plug it back in, and power it on.
- Button method: Press and hold Reset + Connect for three seconds, then power the unit on.
Allow the robot to restart and complete any initialization cycle. If the physical unit works but the app shows it offline, use the LR4-specific network and app troubleshooting rather than repeating the hard reset. Follow the current Litter-Robot 4 hard-reset instructions.

The supplied documentation verifies these LR4 hard-reset methods but does not establish that the LR4 uses the LR3’s single-press Reset procedure for cat-sensor calibration. Do not import the LR3 sequence without checking the LR4 manual or current Whisker support.
How to factory-reset a Litter-Robot 5 or 5 Pro
Use a factory reset for serious troubleshooting or ownership transfer—not for a full drawer, routine litter addition, or a minor app gauge mismatch.

- Power on the Litter-Robot 5 or 5 Pro.
- Press and hold Cycle + Cancel simultaneously for three seconds.
- Wait for the red LED indication.
- Follow the confirmation instructions shown on the LCD screen.
- Re-onboard the robot if the network, account, or ownership has changed.
According to Whisker’s LR5 control-panel documentation, the factory reset restores factory settings while retaining the latest downloaded firmware. It is more disruptive than a power cycle and may require you to restore app and device configuration.
If an LR5 is not cycling, remember that the default cycle delay is seven minutes after the sensors detect that a cat has exited. Pressing Cancel shortens or cancels the countdown. Check sleep mode, the drawer, weight, placement, sensor cleanliness, and obstructions before factory-resetting; see Whisker’s LR5/5 Pro not-cycling guide.

Reset the waste-drawer percentage in the Whisker app
If the physical robot operates normally but the app’s drawer percentage is wrong on a supported Litter-Robot 3 setup:

- MONITOR + CONTROL VIA APP: Control the smart litter box straight from the Whisker app. Monitor waste and litter levels in real time, get health insights, and track kitty's weight after each use
- REDUCES LITTER BOX ODORS & TRACKING: The automatic clean cycle and odor-absorbing carbon filters or optional OdorTrap packs significantly reduce odors compared to standard litter boxes. Fence and step greatly reduce litter tracking.
- SAFETY & USE: Suitable for up to 4 cats, each cat must weigh at least 3 lbs (1.4 kg) to safely use the Litter-Robot in Automatic Mode. Never push the Litter-Robot against a wall or into a corner (must not be touching any walls).

- Empty the waste drawer.
- Open the Whisker app.
- Open Controls.
- Select Reset Gauge.
Reset Gauge is not the same as pressing the physical Reset button. Reset Gauge updates the app’s estimate of waste-drawer fill level. The LR3 Reset button recalibrates the cat sensor. App labels can change as the Whisker app is updated.
Reset did not fix the problem: physical checks
A reset cannot compensate for an overloaded, obstructed, dirty, or unevenly positioned unit. Before repeating the reset, work through this checklist:
- Empty the waste drawer if it is full.
- Remove excess litter and refill only to the recommended line.
- Place the robot on a firm, level surface.
- Check that every foot is clear of cords, debris, carpet edges, and grout lines.
- Remove litter or waste from the base and sensor areas.
- Confirm that the globe, bonnet, drawer, and other removable components are seated correctly.
- Check for a motor or gear obstruction.
- Look for signs of pinch-condition detection or a cat-sensor fault.
- Confirm that the unit is not in sleep mode or still within its cycle delay.
- Update the Whisker app and, where applicable, device firmware.
- If the robot works physically but appears offline, troubleshoot Wi-Fi separately.
Whisker identifies excess weight, sensor contamination, incorrect placement, sleep mode, a full drawer, and motor or gear problems as possible reasons an LR5 or 5 Pro may not cycle. The same principle applies across the product family: diagnose the physical condition instead of assuming every error requires a reset.

Stop troubleshooting and contact Whisker if:
- The unit remains in an error state after the correct model-specific reset and physical inspection.
- A motor fault persists or the robot cannot complete a cycle.
- An LR3 retains a red Power light after onboarding troubleshooting.
- You suspect a failed sensor, base, circuit board, or other electrical component.
- The unit is under warranty or an extended protection plan.
Whisker’s LR3 documentation notes that a persistent red Power light may require a replacement base or main circuit board and support intervention. Use the official Whisker Support center and current troubleshooting wizard rather than relying on generic third-party parts. Warranty coverage depends on the product, purchase location, and plan.
Have this information ready: model and serial number, light pattern or LCD message, whether the robot completes a cycle, whether the problem affects physical operation, app connectivity, or both, and the troubleshooting steps you have already tried.

Is it time to replace an older Litter-Robot 3?
Litter-Robot 3 and 3 Connect were discontinued in the United States, but Whisker says it continues support, parts, warranty service, and technical support for existing LR3 customers. A failed reset alone does not mean replacement is necessary; check support and repair options first.
If the base, motor, or circuit board has failed and repair is no longer practical, official U.S. product pages showed these approximate starting prices on August 18, 2026: EVO from $599, Litter-Robot 4 from $699, Litter-Robot 5 from $799, and Litter-Robot 5 Pro from $899. Prices, stock, shipping, and promotions can change. Compare current models at the official Litter-Robot listings.
- EVO: The lower-priced, compact option described for one- to two-cat households and smaller spaces.
- Litter-Robot 4: The mainstream model with app-based insights at a lower entry price than the 5 series.
- Litter-Robot 5: A newer model with LCD-based controls and expanded monitoring features.
- 5 Pro: The premium option with dual cameras, WasteID, real-time monitoring, and cat-identification features—likely unnecessary if you only need a dependable mechanical litter box.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will resetting delete my Whisker app settings?
A normal power cycle generally only restarts the electronics. A factory reset is more disruptive and may restore factory settings, requiring re-onboarding or configuration again.
Why is my Litter-Robot still showing a full drawer after I emptied it?
On supported Litter-Robot 3 app setups, empty the drawer, open Controls, and select Reset Gauge. This updates the app estimate and is separate from the physical Reset button’s sensor calibration.

The Bottom Line
For an LR3 routine maintenance reset, wait for Home and a solid blue light, then press and release Reset once. For an LR4, use the verified 15-second unplug method or Reset + Connect hard reset. For an LR5 or 5 Pro, Cycle + Cancel for three seconds starts the factory-reset process with LCD confirmation. EVO owners should use EVO-specific support. If resetting does not resolve the problem, inspect the drawer, litter weight, floor, feet, sensors, and motor before seeking Whisker support.
