For better protection, enclose a small pet area with fine-mesh fencing that meets the ground continuously, extends below it, and has no gaps at gates, drains, or seams. A common material is 1/4-inch galvanized hardware cloth; Extension recommendations for height and burial vary, so treat any design as a barrier that needs regular inspection—not a guarantee that snakes cannot enter.
Choose a barrier for a small area
Snake-proof fencing is most practical around a defined play or pet area, rather than an entire property. UF/IFAS describes fencing a whole yard as costly and time-consuming, and notes that barriers may not exclude every species. Start by deciding which compact area you can keep in good repair.
Use fine-mesh wire screening or galvanized hardware cloth intended for fencing. Several Extension sources recommend openings no larger than 1/4 inch; Virginia Cooperative Extension describes a 1/8- to 1/4-inch range for a small play area. Check the actual opening size rather than relying only on a product label. No specific brand, gauge, or retail product is established by these recommendations.
For the material category, look for 1/4-inch galvanized hardware cloth. Avoid loose landscape netting: Illinois Extension warns that mesh netting can entangle snakes and other wildlife, causing injury or death.

Set the height, burial, and angle
Recommendations differ by source and setting, so there is no single dimension that guarantees exclusion. NC State describes a 30-inch-high fence buried 6 inches. Virginia Cooperative Extension and other guidance describe designs around 36 inches high with about 6 inches buried; Missouri Extension describes 4 inches of burial. Several sources recommend angling the upper portion outward, with one common design using an angle close to 30 degrees.
For a compact pet area, a reasonable design based on these recommendations is fine mesh about 30 to 36 inches above ground, with the lower edge buried roughly 4 to 6 inches and the fence angled outward where practical. Adapt the layout to the site and keep the bottom edge in continuous contact with the ground, including over uneven terrain.

- 1/4 inch hardware cloth, ideal for snake fence, opossum rehab cages, chicken coops run, rabbit fencing, flower beds, wide gutters guard, fruit trees, vegetable garden, to keep out small critters such as voles, gophors, racoons, etc.
- The holes are only 1/4 inch to keep critters out and the chickens / rabbit safe, protect your garden fruits and vegetables from rodent animals. The 1/4 inch openings would have to be really small to get through. In the area of Wisconsion, Colorado, Cal kings, small baby copperhead snakes and rattle snakes come for damage seasonally. Dig a shallow trench before installing to ensure the fence is partially underground for peace of mind.
- It's galvanized and very rust proof. Galvanizing after welding to ensure that all welding points are galvanized for maximum rust resistance and long life. Wider weave not too stiff, the material will confirm to rolled shape as tree guards for fruit trees, 19 gauge easy to lay down and easy to cut with wire cutter/scissors. Keep gophers out of vegetable garden.
- Use this to protect vegetables and flower roots, bulbs, rhizomes, etc from tunneling animals. It can be used to make individual baskets or line raised garden beds.
- Use this material to line the bottom of your chain link fence and cut it in half by leaving it in a roll with a hack saw; it is plenty stiff for what you want to use it for. This mesh solved issues with snakes, gophor, skunk, chipmunks, rabbits and other creature living under your wooden deck.
UF/IFAS’s newer guidance calls for at least 36 inches of height measured from the nearest climbable or flat surface, trenching the mesh at least 6 inches against soil or an unsolid surface, and angling it slightly outward. A nearby retaining wall, raised bed, stacked object, or other climbable surface can reduce the effective height, so account for it when laying out the fence.
Close gaps at gates, drains, and joints
A fine mesh panel does little if a snake can pass beneath a gate or through a gap at a drain. UF/IFAS recommends gaps no larger than 1/4 inch, including around gates and drains. Check seams between panels, corners, post connections, and the full ground line as carefully as the mesh itself.

Fit the gate tightly and arrange it to swing inward toward the protected area where the outward-sloping fence design allows. Keep posts and supports on the protected side where possible, so they do not create an easy route over the barrier. Seal or screen necessary openings without obstructing drainage.
Install the fence and check the details
- Mark the protected area. Choose a small space with ground you can inspect and maintain, and note drains, uneven sections, and nearby surfaces that could help a snake climb over.
- Set the mesh layout. Use fine-mesh wire screening or hardware cloth with openings no larger than 1/4 inch. Plan for roughly 30 to 36 inches above ground and a buried edge around 4 to 6 inches, adjusting for local conditions and the design you choose.
- Secure the lower edge. Trench the mesh where appropriate and maintain continuous ground contact. Pay close attention to dips, corners, and transitions to hard surfaces.
- Fit the upper edge and supports. Angle the fence outward where practical, and put supports on the protected side if possible. Measure effective height from nearby climbable or flat surfaces, not only from the surrounding soil.
- Fit the gate and close openings. Make the gate meet the fence closely, orient it to swing inward where the layout permits, and screen gaps around drains and other openings.
- Walk the entire perimeter. Look for openings at joints, posts, corners, the gate, drains, and the ground line before allowing pets into the area.
Maintain the barrier and reduce attractants
Inspect for holes, damaged fabric, loose stakes, and new gaps beneath the fence. Recheck the perimeter after storms, landscaping, or animal activity. Keep grass and weeds low, and remove plants, debris, or stored objects that could bridge the barrier. Trim vegetation away from the fence so it cannot provide a route over it.

Reduce cover and potential snake prey near the protected area: remove brush and debris piles, manage rodent access, and secure pet food and bird seed. These steps complement a fence; they do not make it infallible. Supervise pets outdoors in areas where snakes occur, and follow local guidance for encounters. The University of Arizona Health Sciences discusses dog safety in Arizona, but its regional timing advice should not be generalized to other locations.

A well-fitted small-area barrier can make entry more difficult, but the cited guidance does not establish a universal success rate or a numerical reduction in snake visits or pet bites. Results depend on the design, upkeep, landscape, and local species. A fence is one prevention measure, not a substitute for supervision or local advice about snakes.
