The Norwegian Veterinary Institute’s necropsy concluded that the probable cause was a bacterial infection, possibly following a mouth wound from a stick. Police said the examinations found no evidence that he had been shot.
What killed Hvaldimir?
The Norwegian Veterinary Institute completed its necropsy and related examinations in October 2024. Police official Amund Preede Revheim told the Associated Press that the final autopsy identified the probable cause of death as a bacterial infection, possibly resulting from a wound in the mouth caused by a stuck stick. That is a probable cause, not a definitive account of every step leading to his death.
According to the Associated Press, a stick approximately 35 centimetres long and 3 centimetres wide was found wedged in Hvaldimir’s mouth. His stomach was empty, and his organs had decomposed. Those findings provide context, but the reported examination did not establish precisely when the stick became lodged or how the infection developed.
Was Hvaldimir shot?
No. Police investigated a report alleging that Hvaldimir had been shot, but the case was closed after the veterinary examinations. Revheim said there were no autopsy findings indicating that he had been shot. The Associated Press also reported that X-rays found no projectiles or metal fragments. The available forensic findings therefore do not support the shooting allegation or a claim of illegal killing.

Was Hvaldimir really a Russian spy?
There is no established evidence that Hvaldimir was a Russian intelligence animal or had been trained by the Russian military. The spy theory arose after he approached Norwegian fishermen in 2019 wearing a harness marked “Equipment St. Petersburg” and fitted with what appeared to be a camera mount. The equipment was unusual, but it does not prove who trained him or why he wore it. A history as a therapy animal is also unverified.
Where and when was Hvaldimir found?
The Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries said Hvaldimir was found dead near Stavanger on 31 August 2024. The agency reported that his first documented appearance was near Måsøy, in Finnmark, in April 2019. He later traveled along Norway’s coast, briefly along Sweden’s west coast, and was seen in Oslofjord in 2023 before spending much of his later time in Rogaland. He was approximately 4.2 metres long and weighed about 1,225 kilograms, according to the Associated Press’s 2024 report.

What the evidence establishes—and what it does not
- Established: Hvaldimir was found dead near Stavanger on 31 August 2024, and examinations identified bacterial infection as the probable cause, possibly connected to a mouth wound from a lodged stick.
- Not supported by the examinations: The claim that he was shot. Police reported no evidence of gunshot injury, and X-rays showed no projectiles or metal fragments.
- Unproven: That he was a Russian spy, a military-trained animal, or a therapy animal. The harness prompted speculation, but the available official record does not establish any of those explanations.
