It is cheerful and generally gentle, but it is also an enthusiastic watchdog that may bark to announce visitors. Expect regular shedding, a need for mental engagement, and a dog that usually prefers being part of family life rather than being left alone for long periods.
What is an Icelandic Sheepdog?
Iceland’s native breed descends from dogs brought by Viking settlers between approximately AD 870 and 930. Historically, it gathered livestock and helped with everyday farm work. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) places it in Group 5, section 3 (Nordic Watchdogs and Herders), with no working-trial requirement. The current standard is reproduced by the Icelandic Sheepdog International Cooperation.
This is a sturdy dog slightly under medium size, with erect ears, a curled tail and a rectangular outline. The 2018 FCI standard gives an ideal height at the withers of 46 cm for males and 42 cm for females. Both coat varieties are thick and weather resistant.
| Feature | What the standard describes |
|---|---|
| Coat | Double coat with a soft, thick undercoat and coarser outer coat |
| Coat length | Short-haired or long-haired variety |
| Male ideal height | 46 cm at the withers |
| Female ideal height | 42 cm at the withers |
| Tail and ears | Curled tail and erect ears |
Are Icelandic Sheepdogs good family dogs?
The FCI standard characterizes the breed as alert, cheerful, friendly, inquisitive, playful, confident and gentle. Many enjoy close relationships with their people and thrive when included in ordinary household activities. Early, positive exposure to visitors, children, dogs, handling and different environments helps a puppy develop reliable social skills.

The breed’s farm-watch heritage matters in a modern home. The standard says, “The Icelandic Sheepdog is by nature very alert and will announce the arrival of visitors without being aggressive.” That announcement can be useful, but it is not the same as being quiet. Individual temperament still varies with genetics, upbringing and circumstances.
A good match
- You want a sociable companion for walks, play and training.
- You can provide consistent, reward-based guidance and humane boundaries.
- You are prepared to manage alert barking rather than expecting silence.
- The dog will receive regular company and enrichment.
A challenging match
- You need a reliably quiet dog.
- The dog would routinely be alone for long stretches with little activity.
- You prefer a very independent companion that rarely seeks interaction.
Breeders and owners cited by the Icelandic Sheepdog Association of America (ISAA) mention possible issues such as separation-related difficulty, leash pulling, car chasing and trouble remaining within fences. These are tendencies reported in some dogs, not inevitable traits of every Icelandic Sheepdog. See the club’s temperament guidance.
Do Icelandic Sheepdogs bark a lot?
They can. Barking is part of the breed’s traditional job of alerting people to activity around the farm. A dog may bark at visitors, wildlife, noises or changes in its surroundings. Calmly teaching a “quiet” cue, rewarding an alternative behavior such as going to a mat, and managing visual triggers can reduce unnecessary repetition, but training cannot erase the breed’s alert nature.

Socialization, adequate exercise and mental work help prevent boredom-driven noise. Avoid punishing barking harshly: it can increase anxiety and does not teach the dog what to do instead. If barking suddenly changes, ask a veterinarian to check for pain, illness or sensory changes.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) recommends moderate exercise every day, such as walks and play sessions. There is no evidence-based universal minute target for every individual, so adjust activity to age, health, weather and the dog’s response.
A practical daily pattern
- Walk: Provide a purposeful walk that allows safe sniffing and exploration.
- Play: Add interactive games such as fetch, tug with rules, or hide-and-seek.
- Think: Use short training sessions, food puzzles, scent games or simple herding-style exercises.
- Settle: Teach calm rest after activity so the dog does not learn to demand constant action.
Well-suited activities can include obedience, herding, tracking, agility and rally. Puppies need age-appropriate play and rest; avoid forcing repetitive jumping or long, strenuous outings while bones and joints mature. Older dogs may need shorter sessions, softer surfaces and more recovery time.

How trainable is the breed?
AKC describes Icelandic Sheepdogs as generally quick to learn and recommends early socialization and puppy-training classes. Use small rewards, clear cues and frequent, achievable repetitions. Harsh corrections are counterproductive for this sensitive, people-oriented breed and can damage trust.
Prioritize recall, loose-leash walking, door manners, a reliable settle, cooperative grooming and safe behavior around roads and vehicles. Secure fencing and supervision are especially important if your dog chases cars or is inclined to roam.

Do Icelandic Sheepdogs shed?
Yes. The double coat sheds a fair amount, with heavier seasonal shedding periods each year. AKC recommends brushing weekly and increasing to daily brushing during those periods. A slicker brush for dogs can lift loose undercoat, while a metal comb helps check for tangles in feathered areas. Trim nails regularly and introduce grooming gradually with treats.

If you're looking for a premium dog pin brush that will help you keep your furry friend's coat healthy and shiny, look no further than this one
Both coat types need the same basic plan; the long-haired variety may show tangles sooner. Routine brushing reduces loose hair in the home but will not eliminate shedding. Avoid shaving the coat unless a veterinarian recommends it for a medical reason, because the double coat helps protect the skin from weather.

AKC estimates a life expectancy of 12–14 years. The breed is generally healthy, but AKC identifies hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and patellar luxation as concerns that warrant routine veterinary monitoring. A risk associated with the breed is not a diagnosis or a prediction for an individual dog.
Health tests to request from a breeder
For U.S. buyers, AKC’s breed profile lists hip evaluation and an ophthalmologist evaluation as the national breed club’s recommended tests. The ISAA health statement, approved December 8, 2024, describes the following club guidance:

Questions for a breeder
- Can I see verifiable hip and eye results for both parents?
- Which registry publishes the results, and do the registered names match the dogs?
- What health problems have occurred in this family, including older relatives?
- Which additional tests do you perform, and why?
- What are your contract, return and lifetime support policies?
International guidance varies. ISIC’s international breeding recommendations call for an official known hip status and eye examination before breeding, advise against breeding dogs graded D or E for hips, and recommend hip X-rays from 18 months. They advise against breeding before 24 months and strongly encourage waiting closer to 36 months to collect more health and genetic information. These are recommendations, not a single worldwide law; check the rules of your national kennel club.
How should you compare an Icelandic Sheepdog with another breed?
Use the same practical questions for every candidate:
- Vocality: Can your household manage alert barking?
- Activity: Will you provide daily walks, play and mental work?
- Company: How long will the dog be alone, and how will you meet its social needs?
- Coat: Are you comfortable with weekly brushing and heavier seasonal shedding?
- Health transparency: Can you verify appropriate screening results from a responsible breeder?
There is no single “best” breed independent of lifestyle. An Icelandic Sheepdog is most rewarding when its people value an engaged, communicative working companion and plan for its voice, coat and need for interaction.
