Permai arrived at Monarto Safari Park in South Australia on 29 January 2025 after a 40-hour, 2,700-kilometre journey from Perth Zoo. The next day, she met Burma for the first time: the elephants showed interest and touched trunks through mesh. It was a protected introduction, not a move into unrestricted shared habitat.
Why Permai moved to Monarto
Perth Zoo said the transfer would give Permai the company of other female elephants. It described the move as an opportunity for her to join Burma and other females at Monarto. That was the zoo’s stated welfare rationale for the transfer.
Burma had arrived from Auckland Zoo in November 2024 as Monarto’s new herd was forming. The park said Permai and three other elephants would join her.
How Permai travelled from Perth Zoo
Monarto reported that Permai began her journey on 27 January 2025 in a custom-built, insulated crate. It had air conditioning, snacks, more than 1,000 litres of water and a live camera monitored by carers. Two days later, the park announced her safe arrival after a 40-hour, 2,700-kilometre trip across the Nullarbor.

When did Permai meet Burma?
Monarto reported on 30 January 2025 that Permai and Burma had their first meeting the previous day. The elephants showed interest in one another and made gentle trunk contact through mesh. The barrier allowed them to investigate each other while remaining physically separated; it was not unrestricted cohabitation.

How Permai has adjusted and integrated
In a one-year retrospective published on 29 January 2026, Monarto said Permai had settled in, grown in confidence and begun building companionship with Tang Mo.
On 25 February 2026, the park reported a later milestone involving Tang Mo and Permai: they shared habitat without a soft fence for the first time after months of protected contact and behavioural monitoring. Monarto said they would continue to be separated overnight, with shared time increasing in line with positive social behaviours. This update concerns Tang Mo and Permai; it does not report that Burma and Permai had reached the same shared-habitat stage.
